I am getting a crackling sound out of the input I use for the cable tv (hdtv box through Charter Communications - Newtown, CT). I only get the cracking on this input...the others I use for PS3, Xbox, etc are fine. I get the cracking when cable box is powered off and tv is on, which leads me to believe it is the tv...but wanted to see if anyone has any opinions. Obviously, I get it also when the cable box is on and I am watching tv...whether hdtv or non-hdtv stations.
I have a 40 inch Sony hdtv (crt). I have tried different audio cables and it does not seem to make a difference. Other tvs in the home do not have this issue which leads me to believe it is not the digital/hdtv signal.
Thoughts?

What type of input is it?
Do you have a second input of the same type, if so plug the TV into that input?
See if the problem follows the change.

It is a component input (Input 5). Does not happen when I plug the audio into another component input (Input 6). Must be the tv, huh? Ugh...

Normally if the problem follows the change (in your case a different input) that usually point to the source!
If you can plug something else into 5 and listen, if no noise you have eliminated the TV.
Next I would use the same cable (from the STB) and use them with something else, again if no noise detected you have eliminated the cable as the problem.
If this is the case it all points back to the STB!
Let us know how you make out.

It is very odd. I find it now happens every now and then. Sometimes I don't have it for a week or two and then I'll get it for like 3 straight days. Sometimes if I am watching let's say CBS on channel 2 I will have it, but when change the channels a few times it goes away.
So it is variable, and I do have it when the tv itself is powered on with nothing else on. My assumption is there is some nearby interference source kicking in...cell phone, portable phone, etc... I don't know how ealse to explain it...

Does it mostly happen when changing from SD to HD channels? I have similar issue on my Elite1130. I have Charter STB (Los Angeles) hooked up via component here and every now and then, like you, static pops/cracklings come directly from the plasma speakers. Please let me know if you find a fix.
Cheers,
TP.

Sometimes it is cracking as soon as I turn the tv on...other times it starts after tv on for a bit. But yes, it seems to start or go away when I switch from SD to HD channels or vice versa. Annoying for sure.
Can't be the box right if tv crackles even though box not turned on? Or could it be just because the audio wires are connected even though box off? I just want to figure out if I should call Charter cable and complain or if they will tell me it is my tv.
