View Full Version : Woofer finished on PW2200
Mooch28 04-18-07, 10:09 PM Ok, so i have a problem. I have owned a PW2200 since 2002. So my sub is around 5 years old. I live in Canada, so i choose it over an SVS as money was an issue, and i have no regrets.
I do however regret leaving home, and returning to a finished woofer. It was being over exerted while i was away by people pumping up the volume on the sub. It now distorts, and their it just simply sounds dead.
Anyways, to make a long story short, i am left with one option. I can either replace the woofer with another one from Paradigm, but i feel it is going to be expensive, although i have not confirmed that yet. Does anyone know how much the go for in Canada??
The other option i was thinking, but not sure if it will work, is to remove the finished woofer and replace it with a SVS Plus 12.3 woofer that goes for 219 Canadian on sonicboomaudio
Has anyone ever tried this, or in genereal replaced the original woofer in the PW2200 with another one. Will that SVS woofer work with amp and box?? will it even fit??
This second option is purely a thought, so i need a ton of input if it's even possible.
Thanks guys,
Mooch.
Egghaus 04-18-07, 10:31 PM Kind of unrelated but my dad just had the circuit board replaced on his PW-2200 and it was about $160 Cdn to send it out to Paradigm and get it fixed.
The woofer is not very much, just get a replacement. The svs sub will not work great, 2 different boxes and the woofer is not designed to the box of the pw-2200, it will be a waste of money.

who are the culprits ?
Mooch28 04-19-07, 08:18 AM who are the culprits ?
My brother more then anyone else, but i can't blame him as he has medical issues and wouldn't know the difference between a sub distorting or not.
You guys have any idea how much the woofer from Paradigm may cost me??
Edit: By the way thanks N8DOGG. I will scrap the svs idea all together. I figured it wouldn't work.

That's not too bad at all. How did he send the sub out, did he go drop it off somewhere??
I can't imagine shipping a 68 pound beast. :D
riverwolf 04-19-07, 08:42 AM You might want to try calling P'digm directly. Most manufacturers have at least a 5 year warranty on drivers so you may still be covered. Some will good faith you if you're just beyond your warranty.

Mooch28 04-19-07, 08:57 AM Hey brent,
Thanks for the reply. Anyone have any idea what their tell number in Canada is??
They only have an email on their website.
angelo913 04-19-07, 11:27 AM Do you remember where you bought it, your dealer will sent it out to Paradigm; and yes Paradigm has 5-year Warranty.

Huuum, i am a little confused. I called Paradigm, but the USA number, and they told me they had 3 years warranty on the PW2200.
However, when i called a Paradigm dealer in Canada, he said the subs only had a 5 year warranty. He was going to call Paradigm to double check.
I am thinking maybe the warranties are different in the states and Canada. Can anyone confirm this??
Mooch28 04-19-07, 05:15 PM Ok talked to another dealer.
They said the Subs have 3 year warranty since the have an amp in them, and speakers have a 5 year warranty.
Perhaps that's the confusion.
i would try getting the dealer you bought it from to help you after all
none of us are finished buying equipment in this hobby and he will
want your repeat business.
No problem :) and hope everything works out for you, I had to get a crossover for my studios once and emailed paradigm and they sent me a new on overnight just on good faith. So I have nothing but great things to say about the service.
Mooch28 04-21-07, 11:36 AM Well,
I took it to my dealer today, and it's not my driver that is blown. In fact the driver is fine.
It is the amp that is blown instead.
I wonder how much that amp goes for. I believe i have the 250 watt rms amp in the sub, not the new 400 watt rms.
Is it possible to put an after market amp, or should i stick to paradigm??
I guess it all depends how much it is going to cost me.
your best bet is to stick with paradigm for parts or repair or purchase a sub.
riverwolf 04-21-07, 03:31 PM How did the dealer determine the amp was damaged and not the driver? I would expect a damaged amp to not function at all where a damaged driver could still play badly if the coil is deformed or misaligned from repeated bottoming.
Chances are P'digm added some sort of equalization to the amp that's custom matched to the driver/cabinet. At a minimum, they've included a rumble filter of some sort to protect the driver from over excursion below tuning.
If the amp's not covered by warranty, you'll have to decide if the replacement cost is worth it versus applying the cost to a new subwoofer or possibly going DIY.
I get about 3.3 ft^3 gross volume for the 2200's cabinet, assuming .75" wall material. Depending on P'digms replacement price, there may be a few DIY driver/amp options that would work as drop in replacements. The PE RS12-HO/RS12-HF ($130 USD) and TC Sounds db500-12 ($109 USD) being potential driver candidates matched with a 300-500 watt BASH amp typically $150-250 USD depending on features and supplier.

fretman4god 04-22-07, 06:37 PM yep, I haven't ever heard of a blown sub driver from Paradigm, those babies are solid. I have seen a few amps die. I would definitely go to paradigm for a new amp.
