Will that shiny Halo 2 radar or grenade icon become permanent fixtures on a new plasma ??
I am educating myself on Plasmas and LCD's and while the general opinion seems to be plasma has a better picture the burn in stories are scary. Do you have to baby a Plasma or can you game all day and all night ?
Is flat panel technology ready for hardcore gaming ?
Gamers are you still using CRT's ?
I don't think you could still play for more than 2-3 hours... (Correct me if not)...
I'm in the same boat as you. I'm considering swtiching from LCD to Plasma cause of the various picture quality issues on the LCD (Black crush, banding, motion)
What I would like to know is if the plasma would be burn more easily than a CRT. They both use Phospors, so what you say is false, you can get burn-in on a CRT. I think only difference is that the phosphors are heat up a lot more than CRT so they burn more easily.
For pure gaming though, nothing beat the LCD, but you have to check if you're happy with the picture. If you are, good for you cause you may also get a 1080p display

Plasma burn-in is an old issue which will not affect you unless you're using the monitor in an industrial, always-on situation.
Look around these forums and you'll see tons of talk about burn-in fear and prevention. But how many reports of burn in do you see from dissatisfied users? None. (edit: very few)
Two friends of mine each bought 42" plasmas a few months ago: a Hitachi and a Panasonic 60U. Both are avid gamers, and neither did any break-in procedure. Despite frequent marathon gaming sessions with games like Gears of War, neither have any burn-in.
Gears has a fixed white HUD which is always on screen. I know a guy who runs a video game lounge in New York City. His 42" Pioneer plasma does have faint burn-in from the Gears HUD, which runs on that screen for 8-12 hours a day, 6 days a week. He also failed to do any break-in procedure. That's the kind of usage it takes to begin to burn-in a modern plasma.
You have nothing to worry about.
I originally posted this same thing here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=10221947&&#post10221947).

I have a month and half old Sansui HDPDP5000 with probably 250-300 hours on it so far. While I play Halo on my PC, I play all sorts of other shoot-em-ups on my set. Most of them have the obligatory radar/ammo/gun/health huds. My wife plays mostly RPG's, so they have the status bar with your inventory and all constantly on. We both can do marathons until 4AM when we're in the mood. :-)
So far we haven't had anything more than a little IR that goes away after a few minutes when you change back to a regular channel.
When I first bought the set, before I knew better, I thought the IR was burn-in. I freaked out and hit the "Full White" for about 5 seconds and the IR was gone.
So I guess that unless you read something here that says a particular model has a major problem with gaming, I wouldn't worry about it!

Gears doesn't have a fixed white hud. I've played that game 5 times through now, there is nothing on the screen until you manually reload.
I have a 6070. After it is broken in, I've had marathon gaming sessions with my brothers (12 - 13 hours of gaming), we play multiple games so no one game for more then 3 hours. Works awesome and its stunning.
I've played Halo 2 on my 6070 for over 4 hours straight. No IR on the TV, tried to look for it, extensively, used the break in DVD, everything, no IR. Of course the TV is broken in now so that could help, but I easily play Halo 3 - 4 hours multiple times a week and every weekend. Still no IR.

I game for several hours at a time on my pioneer 5070 plasma and I have never had any burn-in, I have noticed a little bit of IR at time but it doen't last long.
I would highly recommend gaming on plasmas.
