View Full Version : SVSPB2+ To JL F113: Upgrade Questions
First of all, i've thoroughly enjoyed my PB2+ for just about four years now. I had the original 20-39PC before that. I've been with SVS since their inception. I bought into both subs site un-heard and my expectations were always exceeded. I've done demo's for years in my humble basement HT with nothing short of jaw dropping results.
Working for Tweeter for the last couple of years, (in one of five Concept stores in the company) I've been exposed to many brands of subs. Most recently, Martin Logans "little sub that could", the Dynamo, has really caught my ear. It's a small sealed unit that really lets you hear what a sealed sb sounds like. I like it! I'm so used to the ported variety with SVS. I want a change. Only it has to be a significant upgrade for me to part with my coffee table sized subwoofer. I can do anything i want in this room. It is a sealed basement room that i built myself. Completely insulated all the way around with acoustical insulation. Top to bottom. I liken my room to a giant subwoofer enclosure dubbed "The Panic Room" for its completely enclosed properties...right down to the one door that you enter through being a hospital fire door, made out of 2" of sold wood. The room pressurizes instantly.
I would like some real input from people who know these two subs. I believe it is an upgrade, i'm just not sure how much. I know how hard my sub hits. Will the F113 hit significanly harder? I can buy two F113's but, i really want to know how well just one would do. I am in a year where alot of gear can or will be replaced. The old 65" CRT RP Mitsubishi tv i have is going to be replaced by a 1080P front projector. My Pioneer Elite 56TXi receiver will be replaced by a new HDMI 1.3 receiver, used strictly as a pre pro. I power all my PSB Stratus speakers with a B&K Ref 2007.
I really want some feed back on my sub upgrade. Thanks guy's.

steve nn 04-19-07, 08:53 AM I would encourage you to give it a try and let us know what you think? If you do pick up a 113, are you in the position of holding on to the Plus until you decide what you like better? I wont suggest what your preference will be, but from being a past owner of many different subs, including DIY... it's a very good way of getting to the meat of the subject. It's a "you know what you know" kind of thing and leaves no room for question.
Everyone has different opinions on what they like and don't like in sound. When I made that switch (+/2 to F113) I did feel it was an upgrade in SQ, output, and extension. However, it was more than double the cost.

Thanks guy's. I'm definately very familiar with my current sub. Money isn't a factor in this case. I just want everything Eli seems to have gotten from it.
I made the same upgrade, single PB12-Plus/2 to single F113. I was looking for an upgrade in SQ as well as a smaller footprint. The JL fits that bill very well. I'm happy and my fiancee is happy too!
I don't think you'll gain much in overall SPL, but the SQ upgrade is significant (as it should be for 2x the cost).
Boy, you really have to hand it to JL!
They really turned things up a couple of notches in all regards.
I can only imagine how many that have that were considering DD-18s or Plus/2s or XXXX have gone with F113.
I know if I were going back to commercial I would be all over an F113. They do have the ability to amaze. :)
Just to chip in ...I have an extensive experience with subs from many makes, models and some more expensive from Velodyne and Aerial. The JL Audio f113 is the best overall package to date.
It disapears ,blends to perfection and is there where deep bass is calling. The built quality and parts are top notch all around. Even the inards look impressive.
Everything you can want in a sub, plus compactness and massive output thanks to the most capable 13.5" woofer made.

I think you owe it to yourself to buy a DD and try it out for yourself. maybe you can A/B it with your fathom.
Kipp Jones 04-22-07, 12:25 AM I would suggest waiting for the new S V S Ultra.

Maybe.. I am really too entruiged by the F113 to pass on it, i think. SVS has been the hub of my system since they started the company. I'm really looking to move to a sealed sub this time round. I'm sure the new Ultra will be amazing.

I have a Velodyne HGS18...yes I compared side by side. For hours on end using a boatload of material from fake sound effects in fake movies to real quality recordings of music and sounds that did deep and really test a sub accuracy..way more than kaboom boom patouf orange fireballs. ;)
I stand by my claim,JL Audio has the upper hand in the commercial sub arena as it stands. And the Fathom f113 over anything in its price range right now.

i know you have an HGS. I mentioned the DD, it's a different series after all.
which HGS do you have? series 1? series 2? or X?

Chip,
My thoughts on your F113 potential purchase are shop, get a good price, try it and see what your thoughts are. Curiosity is always a desire to satisfy and it appears you are strong on a purchase.
The worst case scenario is you buy it and if you want to change, just sell it. I think the F113's hold their value at the moment very well. I own one of these and it's a wonderful sub as it takes up little floor space, has excellent SQ and is very powerful across the board for HT and music. The SQ area in music is what really makes this sub a winner IMHO.
I do think SVS will raise the bar when they release their new product line. I like that very much as it creates a nice buzz on this forum.

This is the series 2,the X series are the last released and the largest was the 15".

DD-18 owners are saying mostly the same thing, slight edge to the F113. Not to mention about a grand cheaper. DD has the edge with the SMS-1 but not the low end oomph.

Thanks for the thoughts.. I'm really just waiting on a refund check from a blown cruise vacation (thanks to US Air). As soon as the refund hits my checking account, i'm buying either one or two F113's. I have an Audioquest Diamond Back XLR cable ready to go ;)
My PB2+ has served me well, that's for sure.

Sounds like a good use of that refund to me and I don't think you will be disappointed.

if the F113's F3 goes to 20hz ... at what frequency are people talking about regarding the "low end oomph"?
anybody compared the DD18 with subsonic filter set to 20hz and the F113?
In room the f113 is solid @ 16Hz...it can move serious air. JL specs are very conservative.
HT_New_Guy 05-22-07, 04:32 AM Ear, Can you compare it to the Aerial Sub for SQ and integration please. I am looking at purchasing the Aerial LR5 package and I want to have a sub that integrates well for moth movies and HT. Thank you very much!
