View Full Version : Plasma Owners with young kids....

I am going to be getting my first plasma, Pio 5070, in the next week or two, and have a question regarding logos.

I have read D-Nice's thread daily, know what settings I am going to use during Break In period, etc. My question is about "zooming" the screen image.

I have heard people talk about if they watch a channel with logos during the first 200 hours (I checked last night, seems like nearly every channel has a logo, never noticed when I didn't care, LOL) they zoom the picture to make sure the logo isn't visible. I have already downloaded the Pioneer manual and read it, and although it mentions "Zoom" as an aspect ratio choice, it doesn't say anything (that I saw, could have missed it) about this being a variable function where I can zoom as much as I want.

Am I off base here, is there a way to zoom enough for the logo to be completely off the screen?

I know my daughter watches almost exclusively Noggin, Nickoldeon, etc., and although my wife is aware of about a 20 day break in process, my kid wont watch the Discovery channel for 20 days, LOL

Just curious what other parents out there face, or have faced, a similar situation, and how they handled it.

Thanks

Doug

Extra CRT for exclusive Nickoldeon or Noggin sounds like a good idea to me! I don't have kids, but flipping through the channels I have noticed that the Noggin logo looks like phosphor death and then some! Thing is like 100 IRE white with some nice bright orange in there!

Yeah, and Nickelodeon isn't much better : (

Limit your kids tv watching and have them go outside and play. =) I try and keep my 2 kids to about 1 hr/day, 2 at the very most and that's not because I'm worried about logos.

We just have the one daughter right now, she is 3 1/2, so the playing outside needs to be bought into by the wife to watch her, LOL

I will see what I can do, thanks for you input.

Buy a Sammy and use the pixel shift feature (don't know if the Pio has one or not). I've never had a problem with IR and never followed a break in period. Keep an eye out for IR after an hour or two of viewing and take it from there. Wouldn't worry much about it unless you kids will be watching the same channel all day. Remember commercials help too as the logos aren't on the screen during them.

You are correct. Your zoom function is not adjustable. Are you using satellite or a cablebox that you can also zoom on? Sometimes I set my TV to zoom, then will further zoom it on my DVD/etc if I need to push something off the edge. Also, you can have some logos in breakin, just keep it below 10% of the viewing time.

Vizio has that feature too pixel shift.

My question is will a logo burn in? Television shows have commercials so the logo is not there more than 15 minutes at a time. What about watermarks like abc or nbc? The color behind them changes. Will they burn in.

I have not noticed any burn in on my vizio. And I watch baseball games for 3 hours with the scorebox on top. If something would burn it that would have, but so far no burn in.

My kids watch Nick and Disney Channel. I disallowed them watching on the (Panasonic 8th gen commercial) plasma for the first 200 hours. I have always disallowed any stretching or zooming on my TV, as I'm a purist. They've now been watching it (and leaving it on) quite a bit for about 2 years, and there's no burn-in or degradation of any kind.

Watch and enjoy!

I am just going through the break-in process on my 5070 so have the same concern.

There will be a "screen size" button on your Pio remote. Yes, you can select zoom and it takes care of the logos on most stations--not to mention scorebars on baseball/hockey games.

As far as your kid goes...tell them to go outside and play instead of watching TV for the next while. Or read a book...do a puzzle...whatever.

As long as you don't abuse it for the first 200 hours I would not worry about it. It doesn't matter if its Samsung or Pioneer :)

I agree with Roman. After the initial 200 Hours using settings by D-Nice, I let my daugther watch Noggin for a few hours. I haven't seen any trace of IR. I examine it constantly and I am nowhere concerned with IR at this point for normal use.

Just make sure to boot her off when the HD Primetime comes in, you need your fix too.

Oh, I have the Pioneer 5070HD

Nick has like 5 min commercials every 15 min anyway, so I wouldn't be worried about its logo after 200hrs break in.

A separate TV may not be affordable for people with growing kids. I do have kids and I say after the break in let her enjoy. Then again, I treat the TV's in my house as the family's. You'll find some posters here to be a little possessive (not referring to RPS13, don't recall other psots by him/her). Sometimes I spend more time watching stuff with my kids than I do grown-up content.

I have to say no matter what display that is chosen as long as a person mixes up there veiwing the Panel will be fine. Watch a few hours of full screen, then move to gaming, go to computer use, to wide screen movie. Mix up the contet and enjoy your display.

I have two boys who both watch WAAAAAAY too much TV. They do much of this watching on a plasma. I have had no problems with the logos, but I put my unit through a thorough break-in. I didn't log the hours, but I would guess it was at least 150 hours before I let the remote loose to the rest of the family.

Mine is at ~350 hours now, and still exclusively full screen movies for 99% of the viewing. At first I thought it would take forever to break it in, but with Blockbuster total access, its just flying by. I figure I will pacify the rest of the family by hooking it up to cable around 500hrs or so, (A little extra caution, most likely not needed, but why not...the movies are great right now :)).
