View Full Version : streaming DVD's with DSM-520
joshmanley 04-19-07, 05:27 PM has anyone had luck streaming DVD's with the D-Link DSM-520? i am currently wired through a linksys router WRT-54GS and i can stream movies that i have ripped and stored on my computer with DVD Decrypter. but the different .VOB files sometimes load with the alternate audio tracks.
I also changed it so that instead of ripping with multiple .VOB files i was only ripping the main movie with 1 .VOB file but the DSM-520 cuts off after a 4GB file and stops playback
i am running out of options, i have considered ripping with DVD shrink and having it exclude the alternate audio tracks but i have not tried yet.
any input would be greatly appreciated :D

I believe there is a 4GB file limitation when when using the D-Link software. I don't use my DSM-520 to stream VOBs because I prefer converting movies to Xvid. However, if I were going to steam VOBs, I'd probably use DVDFab Decrypter (FREE) to rip the main movie with selected audio track to multiple VOBs. Keeping each movie in a separate folder, you would just hit play on the folder to play each VOB file in succession.
Have you read the 16 page thread on this forum about the DSM-520? There is all sorts of good information there.
sckramer 04-25-07, 02:01 PM I'm able to stream 4.5 GB .ts files-- sin city, wired, just fine--
and the bitrate is far higher than vob's --- its around 18000 bps
I think vobs themselves are not designed for streaming--
win2003svr/ntfs/dlink 1.08 sw
sometimes the audio track is wrong on vobs i've tried, but that's some sort of ripping problem, it plays wrong on anything--
the other problem with vobs, is if you try to search it start skipping & never recovers--
also vobs just make the wireless cut off, the only combination router/dsm-520 i've found that can stream them is the zyxel x550--
joshmanley 04-25-07, 04:10 PM thanks guys,
sckramer what ripping program are you using that gives you the files in .ts files. i know i have .ts files but the DSM-520 doesn't find them it only finds the .vob's. i am using Tversity to stream with the media lounge, and it is faster and more reliable with player than the D-Link software.
sckramer 04-25-07, 05:26 PM well, the .ts files were from p2p neworks, to rip dvd's i use either dvdfab decryptor or ripit4me, which manipulates dvd decryptor
dvdfab lately has been working well, they keep it updated-- then i use autogk to convert it to xvid
other .ts movies i have are: the matrix, shawshank redemption--
the dlink sw can stream .ts --
I've found dlink sw 1.08 to be very stable, running in win2k3--- I've learned not to rename files in the directories it shares, it freezes it-- (or I turn it off first)

i use both dvdfab and ripit4me too. i will try the converting to xvid, but where can i get autogk? also what kind of PQ/size file will a dual layer dvd come out to be after converting to xvid.
i haven't tried sw 1.08 yet but i know i didn't like the original sw, but i will try that as well.
thanks again this is a HUGE help
sckramer 04-25-07, 06:21 PM autogk is here: http://www.autogk.me.uk/
i set autogk to 1/3 a DVD+R (about 2.0 GB), but you can set it to whatever you like, i'd experiment & see the differences in quality--
so I can fit 3 movies on 1 DVD+R--- so I guess 6 will fit on a DVD+R DL (for archival)
can't wait for blueray 50gb blanks to come down in price! should be great for archiving/bu video files.

i'll give it a shot and let you know how it works, thanks again!
sckramer 04-25-07, 06:27 PM i'd like to see if there's improvement streaming vob's with the new firmware, & i hope it supports dvd as ISO/IFO format--
but still, i think they're supporting it *ONLY* because people are asking for it... I think VOB's are not meant for streaming... ie i think they need to do tricks with them in the media server/dsm firmware
anyone know for sure?
joshmanley 04-25-07, 06:32 PM i agree VOB's are a pain in the a** to stream, there is a 5 second break in video when its streaming multiple. i also agree that would be amazing if they did a ISO/IFO support. i wish we could send in requests for what we want in future sw upgrades
ptsenter 04-25-07, 08:17 PM I'm streaming vob's with no problems at all, but I'm using wired network, tried wireless - gave up.

i can stream just fine as well (also wired) but do you ever have problems with a VOB from a movie ever playing with the secondary audio track or director commentary.

When I rip I skip all secondary tracks. How would I play commentaries without help of a menu?
