Hey all, I just walked into Wal-Mart and there was a shiny Elite!! They must not have got the release date memo lol.. Wasn't sure if I was getting it, but it was to good to pass up. My question is, how do I check if HDMI is 1:1. Is there a special way to check or do I have to throw in G.R.A.W.1 and do the old goggle overscan trick?? Or is there a better way? I'll also be testing standard DVD upconversion tonight as well via HDMI!!

So far the HDMI doesn't look as good as my VGA on a 32 inch Vizio at 720p or 1080i. Looks a little fuzzy, let me tweak the settings a little. I have a second 360 hooked up on the VGA for comparison. Be back in a couple to compare.

I'm going to try an HDDVD in a sec and see if this thing upconverts standard dvds.

Well I'm IMPRESSED with the upconversion. I'm watching cars and it looks REALLY good in 1080i. I'm definetely upconverting via HDMI so that's good news!!

There is no auto?? There's only resolution settings. And 1080p is actually greyed out. It must recognize that my t.v. doesn't support it. Yes my LCD is widescreen.

Let me do a quick THX calibration disk and see if I can get the picture better. The colors in the Dash look more washed out than VGA!! Something must need some tweaking. BE back in 5. Let me know if there's more questions.

There is no auto?? There's only resolution settings. And 1080p is actually greyed out. It must recognize that my t.v. doesn't support it. Yes my LCD is widescreen.
I am not sure what its called so don quote me on the exact wording, but there should be another option not offered on the other 360s. The options should attempt to determine your displays native resolution and send that signal.

Keep in mind this may not be the best option if your disaplay has a high quality scaler. I am only mentioning this because you say the HDMI is not as good as the current 360's VGA which is not as good as component in my opinion.

The question I have been asking, but no answer has come. If you hook up the component cable and the HDMI, does it output on both simultaneously or do you need to change a setting on the dashboard or a switch or does it autodetect HDMI connectivity. I assume you could test HDMI vs. vga cable the same way..

I want to watch via the hdmi on my projector and component on my TV distro system...

You could make my decision an easy one.

Well after testing this thing the last 20 minutes i've decided that My LCD is not a good tester for this. HDMI looks almost identical to component on this set at 720p and 1080i. The overscan is really bad on my set via hdmi. I would say 5 percent or more. The lettering in the dashboard is more blurry than the crisp vga. I think someone who has a 1080p set and can get true 1:1 will be able to answer your questions better than me. I did get the colors a little better though and toned down the brightness which helped. So far on my set, overscan is the killer, just like component was for me. I need some sleep for work so I must end for tonight. I'll check tomorrow to see if you have any responces or help that could get rid of this overscan, but I'm sure I need a different set to enjoy the 1:1 feature of hdmi. Gnight.

THX, DVE & Avia calibration discs doesn't do a good job in finding the right balance of colors and brightness for an HD display. IMHO I think you're much better off downloading the NBA Live 06 Demo from the XBL marketplace and head into the options - video settings and whip out a color filter and adjust it accordingly.

I have found that almost every source needs the settings tweaked.

You just described what 99.9% of the population sees as well. HDMI is not going to make you go WOW! Its going to let people with HDMI recievers get rid of a cable run and its going to make people with 1080P sets without VGA use 1080P.

Should be at least to the hype of HDMI...But my experience with HDMI is that it it isnt as good as vga/components.....The digital connection seems pixelated at times.

Well guys I'm back and have a few more downers to report!! While hooked up to HDMI my LCD flickers either blue or purple when switching from menu to movie or back to guide. It is a quick flicker that is only maybe a 1/4 of a second but I still notice the color flicker whenever I'm switching operations. It's either a purple flicker or blue most of the time. Sometimes green. It's also a random color that flickers. I tested quite a bit and if I switch from xbox guide to continuing a dvd, when the screen usually should turn black for that millesecond during the transition, there is a random color flicker. I can mimic the flicker over and over. I've NEVER had this while hooked up via component, or VGA, which I've ran hundreds of hours on each. I suppose it could be a Vizio problem and not the Elites problem, but I need more people to verify if they see it?? Actually, I just thought of something while I'm typing this. My friend has the 1024x768 Vizio plasma, and his PS3 hooked up to it Via HDMI. I remember seeing a similar flicker on his set during menu to game transition. So either it's a universal HDMI issue, or a Vizio issue on multiple sets??

I'll tell you one thing, the upconversion of standard DVDS at 1080i look REALLY good on the elite. I don't have a 1080p set to test that part though.

I didn't include tax on those elites either. Also, I'm aware that you could most likely sell your premium for a little bit more on ebay or some other way but you probably won't get near the $400 you paid for it in the first place?

I would bet that the transfer cable comes with the stand alone 120gb HDD.

I am assuming this because when you buy an Elite, MS is thinking of you as a new console owner.

Buying the 120gb HDD means that you already own a 360 and therefore need the transfer cable.

Just my simple logic and I hope I am wrong and the cable comes with everything.

i like the idea of one cable or all, if they can get it to work.

I will refer you to OXM podcast Episode 58. Here it states a cable is included with the 120 gb HD that will transfer all game saves,content,data, licenses, etc. "We are working on a solution at this time for people switching units. At this time we have no solution." This tells me no cable is included. Elites will come with different drives according to the builder. They have at least 2 different builders. If I recall they had 3 but Wistrom was recently dropped. If you have ever owned a Wistron, (the computer I am using at this time is a gateway built by wistron) you would know why they were dropped. There is a lot of speculation that they had a lot to do with the many problems of the early 360's BUT that is only speculation. Anyways , your elite will have different drives. He also states that all drives must meet MS specs and dB testing was done and he found no real difference in dB. One key point, They did not expect alot of people to switch systems if the option to upgrade the HD exists and they dont expect you to see a difference in PQ. take this for what its worth.

Well yeah thats a convenience that I dont mind either but the people who think the digital signal is superior to that of analog or vga is mistaken. At least IMO, I've seen enough sets using both connections through cable/stb boxes dvd players and game consoles to know their is a minor difference and even in some instances HDMI took the back seat in video...But its nothing superior to component/vga thats for sure.

I just returned from my local Wal-Mart. They had two in their case, but when I tried to purchase it the computer would not let it go through. The guy helping me was in charge of the area and tried to find a way to sell it to me, but it would go through. I decided not to make a stink with management because the guy was pretty cool. He said they received six units yesterday. The package did not mention anything about a street date, so they put it out like any other item.

There was no mention on the box about a transfer cable.

Second, It is impossible to hook up the HDMI cable AND a VGA or component cable at the same time. The reason? They built the HDMI so snugly to the actual regular A.V. slot that the big VGA or component plug in portion COMPLETELY covers the HDMI slot!! What was MS thinking!!! So You have to pick HDMI, or VGA, component cable. :mad:

Tax and ebay fees plus shipping kill the point of even going the ebay route.

Well, after about an hour, I've decided that I can't get HDMI to look as good on my set as VGA looks. So now I'm running the elite at VGA at 1280x720(I can't run 1366x768 on the Vizio because of a bad cropping bug.) And it looks fantastic. HDMI must have been created for all you 1080p owners who have just scan or some other1:1 feature. The overscan is just to awful without it. So I moved my year old premium about 3 feet away to my wdescreen LCD computer monitor via VGA so I can play 360 on occasion when my wife wants to watch greys anatomy and I can still be in the same room (Semi Visiting.... :D )

So in short, the HDMI looks worse on my set on everything, EXCEPT upconverting Standard DVDS to 1080i. I watched multiple scenes of Star Wars, and Cars, and it ALMOST looked HD!! Color me impressed. I think the HDMI licks the VGA slightly on the upconversion. Any more questions??

It's crazy when your trying to compare picture quality. They could have moved the HDMI down a half inch and could run either or...

Good news on the upconverting quality. I'm one of those without good VGA on
my 1080p Sony that has 1:1 and I have the HD DVD drive, so the Elite was
perfect for me.

Let's hope I still think that way after getting it and testing it out. :)

Just to confirm...the "regular" av slot is not the one you need to plug the "optical audio adaptor" right? You can use HDMI for video and optical for audio correct?

Just a quick thought, would a monster cable A/V cable fit with HDMI plugged in? I have the component set and I know the cable is not much bigger than the XBOX a/v connector. Just a thought.

No, just the main big hulking A.V. input that you normally would use for VGA, or component, except now if you use HDMI then you use the big hulking input to plug in the audio dogle, which has a red and white audio or 5.1 on it. Then right underneath it is the HDMI slot for your video.

there is an audio dongle that comes with the elite that looks to be slimmer.

Well I was planning to trade my premium 360 and xbox1 in @ Gamestop and get an elite. That way I'd be paying the same amount as the stand alone 120gb drive. But how will I get my stuff off the old 360??? Anyone have any ideas?

My bro has the 26" version of this tv. It works fine w/hdmi & his ps3. You might want to try running your 360 with another tv to see if it is your tv that's the problem or if it's the 360 (possibly a setting maybe) that's causing it. If you swap tvs & the problem clears up, it's your tv, if not, then the 360.

I'd say try to talk the GameStop employees into letting you use a data transfer cable right there in the store when you trade in the old consoles. If the store is too busy, see if they'll set aside your old HD and let you come back to do it later.

teh xsata transfer cable will work for saves. but you have to transfer to a pc. Don't know if you do a full backup of the 20 gb and restore to a 120 what would happen. I wouldn't want to be the guinea pig.

I`m wondering the same thing.I`m trading in my premium 360 for an Elite at GS,but I need to transfer the data from the 20 gig to the new hard drive. I thought the transfer cable was included. Microsoft sucks ! :mad: They should have put the Elite out last year at launch with the core and premium cause people that wants HDMI and/or a black 360 instead of their premium shouldn`t have any problems switching over especially transfering game saves.

It won't work. The drives are hard-coded with a key. If you image a drive, and then try and put it on a new drive, it will recognize that it's a different drive, and refuse to work (the 360 will say there is no storage device installed). That's assuming the 120's work the same as the 20's.

The best thing to do is use the Xsata to copy-paste the second and third partitions to a PC, and then copy/paste them back over to the new drive.

From what I am understanding, The info on your HD is is saved with your systems Info along with game saves, certs, etc. Switch HD's, old info is still used with old machine. The problem comes when that old machine info gets transfered to a new machine. It doesn't work. If it was as easy as a cable, I'm sure they would have sold it.

I think some of you are jumping the gun. So far the Elite has been tested on only a few sets, One person reporting excellent results as far as DVD upconverting via HDMi is concerned. We all know that there wont be a huge eye catching difference between HDMI and component as far as games are concerned. When it comes to the drives being loud I can somewhat see that complaint, however it cant understand that being an issue with us that have a AV receiver and 5.1 worth of speakers.

BLK 04, I agree, I have yet to see any pics of an actual console hooked up! I have seen quite a few boxs with receipts stuck on them, which have been found on Ebay for a while now. :rolleyes:

Ok, so all this data transfer thing prompted me to waste about two hours and call 1-800-4-MYXBOX. I had to go through the usual BS for the entry level person and then after that I got transfered to somebody who knew a little more. By a little - I mean a little! The person said that MS will be shipping out for FREE migration cables to current 360 premium owners that upgrade to the Elite. HOWEVER, take that with a grain of salt because the last time I called, I was told by the entry level person at Xbox that a cable would come in the box to transfer data. As we can see by those lucky folks who got an Elite early, that didn't happen. However it makes more sense to have current 360 owners just call in for a free cable to be shipped out rather than incur the expense of including a cable that not every new Elite owner would need.

Soooo...anyone have a report on the noise? I don't expect the DVD drive to be any quieter, but how about the fan? My console pulls double duty as an extender, but it's going to be replaced by a V2 when they come out if they don't make the fan noise issue go away.

I wish I could have posted pictures of my Elite more than my boxed pictures, but my cheapy digital camera won't auto focus and all i get is blurry pictures. Second, my pictures are now hooked up via VGA because as my previous posts point out that I couldn't get HDMI to look near as good as VGA whith the overscan issue. If you guys want to see the Elite running on VGA I could maybe get my father in laws camera today and show you the ELITE running if that floats anyones boat.
I couldn't show you side by sides of HDMI vs VGA because I already used the HDMI cable that came with the Elite to hook up my motorola HD DVR to see if I liked HDMI through that, and I don't want to unhook everything AGAIN!! Trust me though. The overscan on HDMI on MY screen at least was HORRIFIC. May have been worse than component. I ran my premium on VGA and my new Elite on HDMI just to test, and the HDMI cut off nearly an inch and a half from the guide. And yes I made sure I wasn't in any zoom mode.

I don't own a PS3 but my friend does. The new Elite is NOT as quiet as the PS3 for reference. I would estimate hmmmmm. Maybe 20 to 30% louder.

Well I beat on my camera and actually got it to work for a little bit. (I'm about ready to chuck it out the window.) Here are some Elite pictures set up. As you can see that the Wii is playing on the screen because my 4 year old is showing his Wii skills to his little friend over here and won't let me turn on the 360 for a screenshot. If someone wants to see the VGA screen shots I could try to take some after this afternoons barbecue that we're going on. And if my camera still works!! Here's the pictures.

Definately. The black was appealing because it went with the scheme in my room, but, if it's gray, then it does me no good. It's odd because the controller looks black and the box looks gray.

I think its just flash photography to blame. The white consoles have a clearcoating that helps protect them from dirt and makes them easier to wipe clean and I've no doubt the Elites have this too. This is what the flash is most likely reflecting off giving it a grey appearance.

I hit 2 Targets, 2 Walmarts and 2 CCs today only to be told at each of them something in the line of "we had 4 and some dude bought them all."

Ebay has stopped certain things over the years and if enough people complained it might would help. Its no different then ticket scalping which is illegal. If ebay would stop,that would knock out a huge majority of it. That means more people that really want consoles would get them at retail price.

I agree, but ebay is ebay if non one sells anything on ebay especially big ticket items they dont make money from paypal and ebay fees.....they will try to stop only if people are getting frauded even then they try to take precaution measures.

Hah... I agree. This is ludicrous. I don't even like the new look of the Elite... the white is way more stylish. As for HDMI? Who cares right now.... no benefit to games, only upscaling for DVD. Why don't you just buy a upscaling DVD player for cheap. This is a classic example of consumerism & Microsofts' grasp on everyones balls.

Whenever I see how much the Wii is selling, I laugh and think of all the PS3 that sit and gather dust.

So I got my elite on Sunday and I'm very impressed on how it looks on my Sony 60" XBR2. The only complaint i have is the color depth of the console and the dvd player. The console isn't really black, it's more like a smoked black or a gun metal gray. The controller it comes with is definitely black. The upscale on the dvd player isn't very good in my opinion. I have a sony upscale player and there is quite a difference, sony being better. Besides those two points, the picture that console creates or the picture my sony tv creates, is out of this world! Not sure if my t.v. is making it look so good or if its the console, anyhow its better than the ps3 in my opinion.

there's at least 1 game, virtua tennis, that runs at 1080p (native). in the future there will be more, but certainly not many.

Good to hear all these early reports on the Elite. Personally, I'll wait until they release a model that is quiet. That's the only hardware upgrade feature I'm interested in and would pay for.

Fair enough. My post wasn't aimed at you but for others who actually obsess about this thing and feel they need it the second it comes out...

I HAVE been obsessed with the Elite... :confused: But that's more due to me sitting here being bored at work, so I'm reading every tidbit I can find! I DO want it the second it comes out... but that's only because I've put off playing all the 360 games I want for far too long. ;) The perks of the Elite didn't really mean that much to me. It just happened to come out at a convenient time for me.

No one has to defend themselves, if you think its great and want to buy it, then do so! Its just dumb to rush into a purchase without knowing just exactly what it is your buying. I had two 360s that went out and got rid of the third replacement, I have sense then been waiting for MS to make this model before I gave them another chance. There is alot of people that might not have owned a 360 in any form that have been waiting for this model. Personaly I like the one cable solution to video and audio conection. I like the fact that it is black and that it will match my other components. I like the fact that it upconverts standard dvds via HDMI instead of VGA as my AV receiver does all my swithing and does not have a VGA input.

nah, i've hit up 3 wal-marts in the dallas (specifically plano, richardson, and garland areas) area and have come up with no elites. there WAS a 120gb harddrive on sale at one location, and i tried the whole "but it's advertised for $99.87!" scam, but it didn't work...boohoo...

i've seen a ton of black accessories, though. rechargeable batteries and wireless controllers to be exact.

My walmarts have them but now are saying not unitl the 29th. Even after they sold a few units this past weekend! :mad:

Okay, decided on the 360 stead of PS3. I have a 56 Panny that does 1080P. I had planned on getting an Elite. But, I have no use for the huge hard drive. I want the best picture available. Would VGA to Xbox be noticably worse that HDMi with Elite ? If not why wouldn't I just get the Prem. 360 and take advantage of Best Buy deal. Thanks for the help Guys.

Hah... I agree. This is ludicrous. I don't even like the new look of the Elite... the white is way more stylish. As for HDMI? Who cares right now.... no benefit to games, only upscaling for DVD. Why don't you just buy a upscaling DVD player for cheap. This is a classic example of consumerism & Microsofts' grasp on everyones balls.


I find it to be a very satisfying grasp; not like the vice grips that Sony has mine in.

VGA provides a very good PQ, but the colors are not as vibrant as they are from the Component. I would get the Elite just to give yourself some more options, $80 is not a bank breaker.

The forthcoming Spring update is supposed to rectify the problems that exist with the 360's VGA output. I'd wait to see what it does before deciding.

You are not seeing my point. I have absolutely no problem with Microsoft releasing the Elite. I am laughing at everyone who is pulling their hair out following every detail about it & madly trying to get their hands on one... In fact i'm impressed with Microsoft for being able to pull more $$ from your pocket. What do you mean, "HDMI isn't useless on games for everyone?" As someone stated previously... the 360 is 720P native! Your tv may be displaying 1080P, but it won't look all that much better from 720P using component on the 360.

Dude! haven't you read that the 360 in fact DOES DO NATIVE 1080p. Just on a few games though and there will be more to come. If you dont believe me then do some research for yourself and you will find that I am not lying.
