The CPU in Elite is different from the white 360. It's unclear if it's 65nm version.

hmmmm.... this has got me thinking  *thinks to himself: $480-250...*

I had just said earlier this week to ignore all these articles predicting that the internals would be the "same ole" shyt as the 360's we've seen before and the 65 process may be indeed being used right now in the Elite.. These companies will tell you anything to maximaze their dollar and keep the masses from complaining about anything that may be deemed unfair to the consumer.

The only truth you have to any product thats announced is to wait till someone actually buys one of the store shelf.. and opens the box.. anything thing else is just guesswork.

I have no doubt the Elite will run cooler and more reliable.. the processor may or may not be different.. but its definitely secured better and it looks like amount and physical size of the transistors on the board have been reduced by about 25%. I cant wait for him to prove this unit draws less power than the older units.

I seriously think im gonna upgrade to the Elite.

Hitachi Drive on that one. BenQ is suppose to be the quiet one, right? :(

Why the hell wouldn't microsoft tell the consumers about the 65nm chip if it was included. It doesn't make sense. But the article is very good, and I'm also curious what other efficiencies were achieved with this model.

Since the cooling fan is a standard 3 pin, would it be possible to do some sort of hack to increase the size/rpms of the fan (hopefully decreasing the mobo flex)?

Because it would directly affect every core and premium sitting on store shelves now that is still a 90nm.. Even worse it may cause people to wait for the new motherboard and *possibly* 65nm processor to show up in the core or premium.

Surely you can figure that part out.

The new GPU & CPU die has the same size as the old one -> no 65nm yet

That makes sense, although MS flatly denying it has the 65nm chip probably means it doesnt have it.

I'm wondering how we'll see MS & Sony transistion the 65nm models in.

I think both will be as quiet as possible about the chip transistion. The #1 priority is to not to affect sales of systems sitting on shelves right now.. while seemlessly introducing new technology thats not just better/more reliable to the consumer but cheaper for them to manufacter. That way its a win-win for both sides.

In other words sooner or later some executive being interviewed will get the nod to say "Yes we are using the new 65nm chips".. but dont expect to see any press releases that either has switched to the 65.

if anything it would make those with a premium or core now more eager to upgrade to an elite. i know if it turns out to be 65nm and run cooler and more reliably I am probably going to upgrade. When ms said it wouldn't have the upgrades that almost instantly took it off the list.

guess i will be waiting for the reviews to see if its actually quieter and cooler.

outside of aestheics on the motherboard, it's exactly the same guys. Just a diff PCD and circuit routing.

here is a question, does the hdmi port also provide audio and video... or is it just video?

Audio and Video, and there is an adapter if you choose to not use HDMI for audio.

Or if you have DVI instead of HDMI...
Makes me wonder if it would work with non-HDCP DVI monitors.
(Probably not, but... Would be nice...)

Well the inclusion of the epoxy resin on the edges of the CPU and GPU is a rather damning inditement of the lack of care that has gone into the design of both the original and Elite units. It is proof positive that there is a quality issue to address, but it is a cynical and cheap method of problem solving which lacks resolve.

If the quality of the PCB has not improved over the original boards, then that bonding will do little to stem the failure rate. The mounting brackets and board quality have long been known to the modding scene as the cause of most common failures and it defies belief that neither of these issues have been addressed in this new design.

I've been the victim of one such failure and I have another unit currently that I was entertaining the idea of upgrading to an Elite, but seeing this, my confidence in the quality of the product is as low as it can be. :(
