I have run out of PCI slots on my PC and can not take out any existing PCI cards make room for a Firewire card. Given that, is there a device (hub or router) that can connect to my USB port that I can then connect a IEEE 1394 plug into? Also, how well do these work?
Example.
PC--->USB--->HUB--->Firwire--->Camcorder
is there a device (hub or router) that can connect to my USB port that I can then connect a IEEE 1394 plug into?
no.

Does one of your cards happen to be a USB card? If so, you can replace it with a card that has both USB and IEEE 1394. IOGear has one for $30-$40 (or less) new.

IOGear is not the only one ... also in the running are GWC Technology and Vigor Electronics and a couple of others.
Best advise on FireWire chips sets on plug in cards is the Agree' chips = more FireWire video channels, better reliability.
I picked up a pinnacle usb video capture box (since I can't get my Sony camcorder firewire connection working). It has audio, video, and *firewire*.
might want to give that a try...
here it is

but I paid less than $40 for it at Bestbuy a couple of weeks ago.
good luck

" ... a pinnacle usb video capture box ..." = Link.
I looked at the specification page here ... Wonder why they even mentioned USB ... ?? as there appears to be no USB connector on the gadget at all ??

Futurists ... Here is the fastest cable interface so far:
" FireWire speeds set to quadruple (http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9595_22-6223102.html) " ( SOURCE = http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9595_22-6223102.html )
FireWire will shortly be 3.2 Gigabits per second ... using the same FW800 9-pin to 9-pin cables !!

looks like you read the first paragraph too fast.
The Studio MovieBox Plus USB Video Capture Hardware and Software Bundle from Pinnacle is a USB video capture device with analog and digital inputs. The hardware is bundled with the Pinnacle Studio video editing software suite for Windows. The box connects via USB 2.0 and features composite, S-Video, and FireWire input. Pinnacle Studio is a user-friendly editing suite, making this an excellent choice for capturing and editing home movies for your computer.
I don't have a way to test this functionality. I connected my laptop via the front FW port, (while the box was connected to another PC via USB). My laptop wanted to install the hardware (pinnacle box) but I didn't have the disk handy. From why I see this may be the bridge you are looking for. Hope you can find it for the price I did (not that I was looking for this functionality)
good luck

Jim J: Do you own one of these ?? Pinncale Studio Box from B&H>> http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/530103-REG/Pinnacle_8230_10022_31_Studio_MovieBox_Plus_USB.html
(This would be the very first devices known to man that converts between USB and FireWire other than a host computer. It may be that there exists a USB port on the advertised device, but I could not find it in the literature or the manual or the pictures ... ?? )
Jim J: Do you own one of these
yes. Like I said, I couldn't test the functionality fully, for bridging. There is a usb port on the back (b-type). I may have some time in the next couple of days to check it out, altho the firewire port on my sony camcorder is hosed (which is why I bought this capture device to begin with).
