Hey guys! I hope you can help me fully enjoy my new HDTV.
Equipment: Sony Bravia 46XBR3, Scientific Atlanta 8300HD DVR from Comcast cable, Monster Ultra1000 HDMI cable, and a Yamaha receiver and Sony DVD player
My shiny new HDTV was delivered and the first couple of days I used my old SD DVR and everything worked ok.
Technician came to install a new HD DVR, but brought the wrong box. The next day I exchanged my box for an 8300 at the Comcast office. Fiddled with it for a couple of days…bad box. At a minimum, it forgot all settings and went back to 480i only anytime it was powered off. Traded it for a new box.
Just to get things working, I went for the easy set up where it just forces everything to 1080i and used my HDMI input. Looked great! For about an hour. Then the screen started to occasionally flicker. Thought it was an effect for a commercial at first…you know flick to black for a second before changing viewpoints. Very soon it was obvious that it wasn’t. Screen just kept flickering to black for just a mini-second…but several times a minute.
I switched over to my S-video input and all was fine…however SD. My DVD also worked fine.
Next day, I turned on the TV in the afternoon using the HDMI input (however left my receiver turned off). Checked on it throughout the afternoon and seemed to work fine although it looked like the shows were originally filmed SD. At night, ready to settle down and watch prime time coming in HD. Everything was fine for about half an hour and the flickering started again. So, the TV and box had been on about 5 hours at this point. The S-video still worked fine. Then I hooked up component cables and that input worked fine. Hooked up coax and that worked ok although SD. So the only trouble seems to be with the HDMI connection. And I tried a different HDMI port on the TV and still got the flickering.
Interestingly, while I was hooking up the component and coax cables I had everything powered off for about 15-20 minutes. When I turned everything back on, the HDMI input was good again….for about 15-20 minutes.
So….what is it? Bad cable? Bad handshake? Heat? Things don’t seem overheated and there’s ventilation. Seems to only happen when true HD is coming in and only after it’s been on for a while.
Thanks for your help!!
