View Full Version : Operation Flashpoint 2 Announced
LENNY 2112 04-20-07, 03:00 PM Codemasters announced today that a sequel to Operation Flashpoint is currently on development and it is it is Codemasters Studios' most extensive R&D project to date. Below is the press release with the announcement:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Operation Flashpoint, the game that invented the conflict simulation genre, to return in 2008
Promising warfare on a scale never seen in a FPS, the biggest name in modern military simulation gaming will return in 2008 as Codemasters confirms that Operation Flashpoint™2 is in development for PC and major console formats.
Operation Flashpoint™2 will mark the long-awaited return of the total conflict simulator, which won international acclaim. Now in development, it is Codemasters Studios' most extensive R&D project to date. With the studio's largest development team ever assembled, Operation Flashpoint™2 has already benefited from over two years of pre-production on a closed set basis and will use a new FPS variant of Neon technology, the studio's proprietary middleware.
Building on the original game's heritage, Operation Flashpoint™2 will see the most realistic modelling of conflict scenarios in a new contemporary theatre of war. By offering a multitude of military disciplines, gameplay will deliver warfare more realistic and intense then ever before, while an extensive multiplayer component will create battles on an incredible scale.
Set to redefine the genre it created, Operation Flashpoint™2 is coming in 2008.

Wow that is some nice real time graphics! Looks like the Graw 2 intro video!
Sadly it will probably be a while before we get some gameplay footage. Looks promising though.
LENNY 2112 04-20-07, 03:05 PM From Xboxyde: The game itself will used the Neon engine already being the base of Colin Mc Rae: Dirt.
scimethodman 04-20-07, 05:10 PM I still pull out OFP 1 every now and then on the PC, love that game. Very interested in this. I loved the play mechanics in the first, and all the driveable vehicles were very well done as well IMHO. OFP 1 was the game that finally pulled me away from counterstrike. The sheer openness to the game was awesome. I do remember there being a lot of control functions on the keyboard. Curious as to how well this will be done on the 360 with the controller. I love the ease of the console games, but sometimes with a game like this, I wonder how hard it could be with a lack of keyboard and mouse. But, Graw 1 and 2 seem to do okay with controlling squads and vehicles and such. Can't wait for this one.
HeadRusch 04-20-07, 05:31 PM OFP and Resistance are probably some of the deepest FPS's ever released.
It takes a while to get into the game, particularly to learn all the commands, and it was a game you had to DEVOTE TIME to since some missions, particularly ones where you were alone as a commando, could take HOURS to complete. Its a game I own and will continue to play from time to time.
But once you understood how it played, man it was fun. One bullet can kill you so you had to always be careful, but at the same time dropping somebody with your weapon really was satisfying, you had to work for the kill with those iron sights.
My only gripe was that many of the missions were simply too difficult, period. They'd just go on and on and on......and the objectives weren't always clear.....but man when you were on foot and heard the rumble of a tank or APC in the distance you booked fast for the nearest woods :D

jasonstiller 05-29-09, 07:29 PM This was supposed to come out real soon but I heard last week that it got pushed back a week or so.
jremy510 05-29-09, 09:31 PM I really loved the original on PC. Great balance between a "sim" feel and fun gameplay. I hope this is as good.
The sniper mission in CoD4 actually reminded me a lot of Operation Flashpoint.

jasonstiller 06-01-09, 04:43 AM correct me if im wrong but isnt this the op flash that isnt being developed by the original developers Bohemia interactive? Theres another one out there but its a different name right? Like ARMA2 or something.

Codemasters is the developer. Bohemia made Arma2 which is out in Germany-rest of the world later this month (PC).

eatenbacktolife 08-12-09, 11:17 PM I'm really excited for this game. It reminds me of a cross between Ghost Recon and Battlefield Bad Company, which is exactly what I'm looking for.
Scott Simonian 08-13-09, 02:07 PM I was pretty skeptical at first but this has been warming up to me recently. Looks like it has been well translated to the 360 and the interface has been cleaned up significantly. I very much look forward to this release. :) Hardcore mode looks sick!

Never tried the PC vers of Op Flash 1 for PC? Give it a go, lots of mods, was great in spite of its bugs...
Ghost Recon is still one of my all-time faves. I think the biggest wants that I have for a shooter game nowadays (since graphics nowadays is satisfactory, and mounting vehicles is more common) are (1) player-created content, and (2) physics - i.e., blow up whatever, manipulate whatever, no boundaries (except for the map boundaries), climb whatever (hills, rocks, trees, outside of buildings, etc.).
I'm getting ready to give Arma2 a go for PC. I think that the Xbox ver will be great graphics-wise, but can't compare to the moddability of the PC vers.

Scott Simonian 08-20-09, 01:28 PM Formulanerd - Nice video but tronn posted that same vid in post #17. ;) I can't friggin' wait for this one to come out. Pleeeeeasssseeee tell me some of you want to get together for a co-op campaign playthough. Oh, pretty please? I've been dying to do just that since I got the first Operation Flashpoint on the PC almost 10 years ago. :D
whiskey > work 08-20-09, 01:49 PM This is my next purchase. My only concern is codemasters themselves. I mean, let's face it. Not exactly a household name in gaming, although they did a great job with the racing games. Probably no reason for concern, just sayin. If this is any good, I'll bypass cod mw2 and just grab this until bad company2

Codemasters has been a "household name" for me ever since Operation Flashpoint came out almost a decade ago. ;) I see your point though. I hope the general public doesn't see it as a COD4 clone. It's a whole different beast. Really glad to see how polished it looks and a much needed sprucing up of the user interface. My friends and I were watching several gameplay videos off YouTube this past week. Got my friend who has had no experience with OpFlash into wanting this one nearly instantly. My ears perked up bigtime when I four player co-op through the campaign was eluded to. :D
Can't ..... friggin' ...... wait!
whiskey > work 08-20-09, 02:47 PM that's the only concern I have is overall quality control. How are they going to handle online? Are their servers going to freak out when all these people come on? Will it be buggy? But these are just general questions I have of any game coming out. The game looks tremendous, truly does. This is the style of game that I enjoy; much more so than just soldier vs soldier warfare

I've only recently found out about this series, but I can say that playing the hardcore mode, in CO-OP, could be very cool. My friend and I really dig Hardcore mode in COD4, but I've somewhat grown tired of the gameplay (of course I'll play a zillion hours on MW2) so this could be the open world, tactical, SOCOM-like game I've been waiting for on the 360.
We'll have to see how it turn out next month and maybe get some hardcore CO-OP action going on.
Scott Simonian 09-03-09, 02:52 AM I'll be down for some co-op OpFlash2. :)

If you are new to the series and are interested in this game, definitely watch those vids if you haven't yet. Especially with the sound on. One of the dev's talks all about the game and a very large amount of features included. If you are excited now, you will be excited about it once you have watched those.

I will for the PC if I can find it in the stores here in Canada. Hope STEAM has it.
ADD: on 2nd tght, I wait for reviews, I don't want another ArmA II.
ADD2: I just pre'd it from Amazon. Since its cross platform, it shldn't be a system hog like ArmA II.
Scott Simonian 10-02-09, 12:51 AM I just put in a pre-order at Gamestop today. Picking it up on Tuesday. Been waiting for well over 5 years for this. Besides DJ Hero, it is the most anticipated game release of the year for me. :)

Not even going to point you to my brothers Facebook.
Scott Simonian 10-02-09, 07:09 PM Heheheh, yeah, I've been playing OpFlash since the first demo came out on PC way back in 2000 or so. Have had all the expansions and played the crap out of the game. It wasn't until ARMA came out that I stopped playing. My PC could not run with that beauty. Oh well. Waited and waited and waited for the real OpFlash2 to come out. It's been a long haul but early next week....it will be in my hands. :)

Same here for me and my brother minus ARMA. I have been contemplating getting it for the 360 or PC and decided last week to go ahead and pre-order for the 360. Hopefully the final product turns out to be just as addiciting as the first. I watched a 10 minute demo of it yesterday and it is bringing back some long game session memories. RedHemi300C if you want to hook up for this.
Scott Simonian 10-05-09, 07:19 PM Wwwwoooooooo!!!! Coming out tomorrow, baby! :D
Who's picking this up tomorrow? I put in a pre-order at Gamestop. Haven't pre-ordered from them before so I sure hope it actually is there tomorrow and not later in the week. :o
HeadRusch 10-05-09, 07:29 PM The thing that I remember about flashpoint was just how satisfying a game it was to play once I learned how to play it.
Sadly, I also remember that it took me FOREVER TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY IT. You had to devote your life to that game, learning squad commands, and some of the missions were stupid hard, and usually involved you running as fast as you could into dense forests, or traveling long sections of map in fast-speed...through dense forests...or being ambushed by guys you'd never hear...in dense forests.
:D
I also remember it running at like a maximum FPS of 20 no matter what rig you threw at it.
Having said all that, I think this game will wind up being great fun....but I just dont haev the time to devote to a game like this anymore. <tear>
jasonstiller 10-05-09, 09:59 PM Add me to the list of who is picking this up tomorrow. This is the kind of game im sure ill be playing a couple years from now much like Rock band ha ha. Hell, I was playing the original on PC from release till 2006. I cant wait to stalk me some prey
alpha21 10-06-09, 12:37 PM the website has a training test, where you can unlock 2 new missions.
the tests are fun. I've yet to do well on them, because I keep getting interupted by work:mad:
for those who get the game, be sure to post impression. I'm on vacation next week, and need something new to tide me over (take my mind off) until MW2. want to know if this game is worth paying full price.
formulanerd 10-06-09, 02:07 PM those mini-games are pretty cool, the last one really screws with your brain
OFPWEB1 & OFPWEB2 are the codes you get when you get 85% or higher
Scott Simonian 10-06-09, 04:23 PM Awwww! Looks like I won't be getting my copy until tomorrow. Gamestop won't get their delivery today. Lame. So much for that pre-order.
jasonstiller 10-06-09, 04:39 PM WHAT'S up with the 10 dollar price drop via gamestop online? So I still get to buy it for 60 since I took the time to preorder in the store!?! That's lame.
Scott Simonian 10-06-09, 04:49 PM Holy f**k! I pre-ordered online last week for $60. I better get that price when I pickup tomorrow. I f**king hate game stores. Sticking with Amazon and Worst Buy from now on.

I read GS will honor the drop and its only for the 360. Strange.
Scott Simonian 10-06-09, 05:38 PM Yeah. I txt'd my friend about it and he says the same thing. I guess that's good for me but what about Jason? He says he pre-ordered in store. The price on the site says 'online only' so he will end up paying $60. Or am I wrong? I hope for his sake, I am wrong.
Wish I were getting this today but I guess it's better that I get it tomorrow. I get a half day at work. Yay! My friend and I will play co-op campaign, fo shizzle. :p
whiskey > work 10-06-09, 08:01 PM typical that gamestop wouldn't honor the online price in store. Just makes me lol inside thinking about how their brick and mortar stores will be gone in the near future when everything is streamed

Scott Simonian 10-07-09, 01:59 AM I'll be picking it up tomorrow after I get out from work in the early afternoon. My buddy and I will be playing it co-op. Should be good fun. :)
ratbones 10-07-09, 02:28 AM I've been hearing chatter and please please don't compare this game to any COD style. It is a unique game the closest you can come to GRAW style.
DaGamePimp 10-07-09, 03:24 AM Walmart had it out just before midnight. When I called earlier the guy said they had it in the back according to his computer but it would not be put out until the night stock crew came in.
UPDATE:
You want fps sim you got fps sim!
I played for about an hour and there is way too much to do/learn to hold my interest, if you are a GRAW fan then this should please (GRAW bored me to tears, really enjoyed RB6 though). The game is well done and actually pretty impressive so I am not panning it, just not my cup-o-tea. Seeing how I only played it for about an hour I will not share my opinions on actual game play (I'd just get ripped apart for not giving it more time, which will probably happen anyway ;)).
Hope many of you do enjoy it though, from my brief game time it's certainly well executed :).
Jason
whiskey > work 10-07-09, 08:30 AM my biggest fear is it is too realistic; by that I mean it takes way too long to get to spots then getting set up takes time, etc. I work a lot, so I don't want my games to feel like work too. But this is real war imo and that is awesome. Just not sure I would have the time to do it properly
Scott Simonian 10-07-09, 12:41 PM Can't speak for this one but that was how much of the first OpFlash was, Whiskey. Sometimes a single mission could last over an hour for various reasons. It's pretty intense though. I'll be picking up my copy in a few hours. :D

ultracat 10-07-09, 02:49 PM I just played the first mission... there was a lot of distance to cover... took some time.
Yeah, but was it fun "intense" or boring as Whiskey worried? Thinking of picking this up tonight on the way home. Early impressions most welcome...
DaGamePimp 10-07-09, 02:51 PM Indeed, this is not one of those instant action games you'll want to pop in and play for 20-30 minutes, plan some time for this one. The controls alone should take some time to get down as it would seem every single button is used and then there are many functions that go several levels deep for each desired action.
ultracat,
I would say it's a challenging game with enough realism to make most FPS fans walk away, so... probably boring for many but some will surely find it entertaining.
I would suggest to anybody that is 'iffy' to give it a rent, solid game but certainly not going to appeal to the FPS masses (I think most COD fans will find this game to be too realistic, slow paced and... boring).

I played the original PC version and at the time is was real immersive, tense & fun but my fear now is that I have become so conditioned to a faster paced game that I just might not like it as much as I used to. Though it sounds like the co-op could save the day on this version, I'll wait till some of my friends get it & see what they think.

Thanks, I picked it up. I have enough run n' gun shooters. I also like games like GRAW and AA: True Soldiers that are more realistic. See you all online (KrazeeEyezKeith if you want to add)!
FrankJ.Cone 10-07-09, 05:36 PM I had fun with the level but I prefer slower paced strategic shooters, not CoD, Halo etc.
I would only suggest Ghost Recon fans buy it without renting.
MarkcusD 10-07-09, 06:03 PM I like it so far though I've only played the first level and I'm playing on PC. Slow paced, but intense is how I would describe what I've played. I also tried one of the bonus missions (ambush). I died very quickly.

Controlling a Spec Ops team, this FTE tasks players with ambushing a PLA campsite in the dead of night.
Set in a heavily forested area, players must move cautiously between tree cover, with the PLA fanning out and trying to flank at every opportunity. A fierce and atmospheric firefight, mixing long-range marksmen shooting and close quarters combat around the campsites.
Debris Field code OFPWEB2
Set amongst the vehicle wrecks from an earlier battle players must lead their fire team through the strewn vehicle wreckage, seeking cover wherever they can, and engage superior numbers of PLA forces assaulting their position.
The player must work with their fire team to ensure that the large numbers of PLA don’t flank them at any time, stay mobile and use fully automatic weapons, grenades and grenade launchers to suppress the enemy at every opportunity.
Night Raid code RaidT18Z
Players take control of a Spec Ops team, assaulting PLA units defending a key infrastructure asset on the Island. Using night vision, giving the player’s fire team better visual range than the PLA defenders, players can choose whether to move slowly and stealthily, at the risk of the location being reinforced, or “go loud” and move quickly, but blowing the cover of night.
Coastal Stronghold code StrongM577
Players assume control of an infantry fire team, raiding a key PLA coastal defensive position. Once the PLA defenders have been eliminated, the player will have to organize their fire team to hold the location from PLA counter attacks, improvising defensive positions and using any fixed weapons they can find to tip the balance in their favor.
Ambush code AmbushU454
Surrounded and outgunned, players control a lone infantry fire team, tasked with holding a village against waves of PLA attackers. With the PLA assaulting from 360 degrees, players must use their fire team to cover all the directions, using defensive cover offered by the village to hold off the attacking force. Players will use building defensive positions, fan their fire team out among st the village and constantly position their fire team to offer optimal protection against the attacking PAL force.
Close Quarters code CloseQ8M3
A bold daytime raid on a village, the players assume control of an infantry fire team tasked with flushing the PAL out of a village location. The PLA are already dug into strong defensive positions, and reinforcements will be on their way, so players must move swiftly to eliminate the PLA inside the village before holding off reinforcement waves from within the village. Using CBQ weaponry, grenade launchers and anti-vehicle weapons, this is a fast-paced and intensive FTE featuring building destruction and close quarters combat.
**Remember, the codes are case sensitive; that includes numbers. yes, numbers. If your caps are locked and you enter the numbers it may not work.
jasonstiller 10-08-09, 02:52 AM I just played half of the 1st mission and i gotta say, holy crap! This game is awesome! Very immersive :)
FrankJ.Cone 10-08-09, 06:49 AM Finished the first and second mission, started the third. Boy are my feet tired!
ultracat 10-08-09, 10:04 AM Played all night last night. Played mission 1 + 2 on normal with 2 other friends and spent most of the night trying to complete mission 3 (gave up at like 1am LOL). I really like this game, it's right up my alley. It's quite slow paced and realistic (in most respects). I like being able to approach an encampment of enemies, crouch down, aim my gun, and pop off a few single shots to take out an enemy; it's way different than running around emptying clips of ammo into people a la COD.
There's a few things I don't like and hope they fix though. It's one of those games where they haven't thought about parties playing Ranked together. There's different ways to do it (all confusing) but we settled on setting up a server and then the other two guys would have to find it quickly and join before other random players joined. I'm also disappointed about the number of people playing this game. For a game that came out yesterday, there wasn't a lot of servers last night ~10 or less ranked or player at any given time for the co-op (remember, it's only 4 people per match so 10 x 4 = 40 people playing!!) It also really, really irritates me that the booklet that comes with the game (a very complicated sim/shooter game remember) DOESN'T EXPLAIN most of the gameplay, classes, navigating the multiplayer options, etc. It's just too damn obvious they are pushing people to buy the stupid strategy guide. I'm hoping someone will scan it and upload it to ********** or something cause there's no way I'm paying extra money for an explanation of how to play the $60 game I just bought. Oh yeah, and driving vehicles is terrible.
Anyway, I hope more people play it, but I'm having the feeling that once my friends and I play through all the missions and MW2 comes out, this will end up being traded in (even though I like it!) because no one will be playing it.
FrankJ.Cone 10-08-09, 10:13 AM On the 4th mission now. Game just got HARD. I need to take an airfield and then the control tower. I get into the field and then almost to the tower but I always seem to get sniped. Then the game drops me back 5+ min. OUCH nasty checkpoint there...
I tried taking over a Hummvee and driving in but it seems there is ZERO armor on a Hummvee as any bullet that hits it hits ME!

The guide is actually very useful. I understand your point, but I would be lost without it (still kinda lost with it).
Anyway, played Mission 1 first. Took me 1 hr 31 min, got all primary and secondary objectives but I forgot to get the bonus objective (Fly the chopper around the island) which is also an achievemnt. The mission starts at dusk, and since time moves at 3x speed of real time, the mission took 4.5 hrs in game time, so it was dark when I finished. Kinda cool how the day cycled, but sadly my loadouts weren't for night ops.
Then I tried the first 2 Fireteam bonus missions (night ops and the beach one). Those are sweet. Just quick little missions where you kill dudes, but strategically. The night ops one is nice cause all 4 of you have the thermal scopes. I played that one a few times to try out different approaches. Those would be great in co-op.
Then I tried MP. First couple of games couldn't get in, finally got to play an Annihilation match, picked the Sniper load out and got 4 kills. I wasn't a fire team leader so I didn't have any AI's to control. It was meh, but I think everyone is just kinda figuring out what to do right now (like me).
As for the game, very immersive. When the PLA start coming after you its a rush. Much different than corridor shooters where dudes just stand.
I need to learn how to give individual soldiers orders, I always seem to mess that up somehow. Team orders are fine. Also, what to chain commands on the map to really employ strategy. Have to go back to my guide to see how to do that correctly. Overall, a lot of fun. Co-op will be a blast.
alpha21 10-08-09, 10:53 AM I plan to pick this up tonight.

I tell you what, that is one of the best strat guides I have seen. Tons of info, but this game has a lot of thing going on. Plus you can play any mission anyway you want and it will be different every time which is cool.

Really? Im getting backordered online for BB
Im a bit embarrassed to say I went thru as much trouble as I did trying to find this flippin game. 2 Gamestops, an EB and Best Buy....
No luck anywhere ... They probably did not supply the apparent demand I was completely unaware of for this game....

JuiceRocket 10-08-09, 01:17 PM I'm really interested in this game - can anyone tell me what happens to the squad if you play 2 man co-op? Also, is the co-op online?
Thanks!

Scott Simonian 10-08-09, 01:27 PM I think if you play co-op it is still a squad of 4 just with one less AI controlled member. The co-op is online only, maybe system link too...Im not sure. My friend and I are hoping to start our co-op campaign together tonight but that's if he can get his internetz re-installed in time.
Played for a few hours yesterday. In short, it is completely awesome. Just the kind of OFP I remember from way back. So far I have only played a few selected quick missions and the first 'tutorial' mission a few times over to do it different ways. For me, I am not blown away by the game. There's a bit of "been there, done that" with me but that's okay because I really like this game and am very happy to say it plays just like the old game but a bit more streamlined. That's a good thing cause OFP has always been a clunky kind of game with its interface.
I've got a bit of a cold today so I don't feel like typing much more today. Plus, I haven't even got to main island yet so I have little else to add. Happy to see eveyone else is enjoying the game. I'd say there is a good chance that there will be new campaigns in the future. I would count on it. Graphics and sound are pretty decent too. Bullets whizzing by sounds great. :)
Anyhooooo.... Have fun and good luck, fellas.
EDIT: Oh btw, I was playing this on 'Experienced' difficulty.
dobieck1 10-08-09, 02:14 PM My highlight from last night. Bear in mind, I've only played about 3 hours total so far
Playing Coastal Stronghold Bonus map.
I chose the sniper and took my spot on the right side of the ridge near the ocean, about 250 meters from the 2 guys standing guard as the others go inside. Ordered my team to halt while I took my position. Then ordered them to move up 100m or so behind some bushes. ( It tried to order them to 3 different places but haven't been able to master that yet). Anyway, then gave a command to fire on my lead.
Lined up the farthest dude in my scope, about 2.5 dots up, boom, dead. I thought my team would go for the 2nd but they didn't (not in LOS I guess) so I fired another shot , boom, get him in the head. I felt like Stephen Baldwin in the Usual Suspects.
So then guys start coming out of buildings running up the ridge towards me. I try to start getting the F out of dodge and get some cover, and my AI homies unload on the PLA and take them down. I was so proud of them. It was awesome. When the jeep got there with the reinforcements, they killed me but the first part was fun! Those little bonus missions are awesome
Scott Simonian 10-08-09, 02:25 PM My buddies and I were taking turns playing that mission before we quit yesterday. Funny, we did something similar to what you did. Watch out on the left side of that hill. There is a mounted grenade launcher that you do not want to get shot at with .... but.... after a few moments after engaging them a utility truck pulls up with troops. If you can, you definitely want to be on that grenade launcher when they pull up. [evil laugh] :D
JuiceRocket 10-08-09, 02:25 PM Thanks Scott. Feel better!
Is there a cover system in this game at all? I've never played an OFP game before, and didn't see any mention of it in the reviews.
Thanks,
-JR
Scott Simonian 10-08-09, 02:28 PM Sorta but not really. You must take cover behind something to stay alive in any OFP game but I haven't seen it used in a 'contextual' kind of way as it works in modern action games. Maybe there is but I haven't noticed. I just kinda take cover behind solid stuff naturally when being shot at. ;)
I did notice there is a contextual vaulting you can do over a few objects though.

No, just like COD, you just hide. But the AI doesn't magically know where you are if you are hidden. They just know your last known position until one spots you again.

No, no, and no on customizing. Each mission, and member has their own weapons suitable for the mission.

Replicant Nexus6 10-08-09, 04:57 PM Wow! Im really digging this game so far. Ive played Day 1 (Dragon Rising) and so far, its the most authentic sounding military game Ive ever played in terms of language used. The sound effects are very good, and animations while at times choppy, convey the sense of weight you'd expect of a soldier carrying equipment.
The graphics are solid considering the gigantic-ness of the maps and I LOVE the fact that you have to hump your gear everywhere. Honestly, it may seem frustrating if you're expecting a quick action gameplay experience but I feel dropped into the middle of a situation and as everyone else has said, the immersion is perfect.... this is definitely closer to a strategic simulator than anything else recent on console.
Lots to recommend. A "buy" if you've been wanting an authentic war situation simulation on console. A "pass" if you're expecting COD 4\Open World redux.
Good stuff! :D

formulanerd 10-08-09, 06:10 PM U are not FormulaN3rd anymore?
i am, but a few avs nerds is a community list, my list is pretty full so i was just adding people there.... it's full of MW2, ODST Firefight, and (hopefully) dragon rising players.
if you're already on my friends list, disregard :)
Wow this game is not messing around is it? I didn't even know it existed until two days ago. Then I read about 4 player co-op campaign and all my bells started ringing. The only real weakness reviewers state is the command interface when playing with AI and all the annoyances that arise from it in a game that is supposedly quite the hardcore tac team shooter. I can imagine, good thing that problem evaporates in co-op and team tactics is the only reason I still play shooters.
The bad thing is I'm playing on PC and just lurking over here because it's where all the cool kids come to talk. Got my buddies to play, but it would be nice to play some games with the peeps here sometime. My bad, I know, but for a game like this I can't do the controller tango. When I get serious I need mah mouse.
Anyway I'll be chiming in when we get time to play tonight. Two of us hopped in real quick last night and tried the first mission. On hardcore, we felt tough. Well it is hardcore, lots of friendly brain splatter at the most inopportune moments. The AI seems to know when you're feeling safe, they wait until you look at the map and BAM. We were laughing so hard. Squad leader in front with us behind, he stops, calls clear, says he's gonna look at the map and the back of his head explodes all over my screen. We didn't make it through the mission, but it was always our fault. Hard but fair, and I really love that. Don't mind redoing games like that at all, you just have to get better and you know how. Immersion is great and so is the paranoia. Doesn't take long and you start thinking intuitively, as if you were on an actual battlefield not a game with props to headshot. The lack of HUD and checkpoints reinforced that, hell you don't know anything until you look at your map and your brains come out. No ammo counter, no health meter, no compass, just a gun and lots of vegetation. I shot a bush in panic at one point. Friendly fire is on, too.
Can't wait to play more. Not that I really needed more games to play at the moment, but what can you do...
FrankJ.Cone 10-09-09, 07:02 AM I did notice (IMHO) a HUGE issue with the game: Its a game designed around combat at a distance but not everyone has a scope in co-op. I played two maps in co-op with the scope and on the third all I had was a machine gun...
Played for a couple hours last night, and I really like the game. This is my type of game, I'm pretty good at moving my troops. I haven't had too many AI issues, but I think it is because I'm constantly issuing orders moving them and setting them up for defense or abush positions. I think there are more problems if you just have them follow you, then they do stupid things and die. I had to get used to the long range encounters, I mean at first you can't see anybody at a 100m, eventually you start always scanning ahead and paying attention a lot more. I will say with a MG or SAW, all you can really do is fire in the direction of incoming fire, most of the time you are not going to see the target real clearly if you are 200m away. However, with all the rounds that that weapon puts out, it is pretty deadly at that range, and will suppress the enemy pretty well.
alpha21 10-09-09, 11:57 AM after more searching, it looks like Walmart, Target and TRU are all "online only".
but BB says it's available at the store (but is "backordered" online) for my location (3 of which are all on my way home from work)*hate quoting myself*
well it wasn't as easy as I thought:mad:
first BB - didn't see it on the shelf, CR were too busy playing grabass to ask if they could help me find anything, so I didn't ask if they had it in back or if it sold out. just moved along to the next BB, which is approx 6 miles away.
second BB - wasn't on the shelf, found a CR as I was walking out, he checked the back, and said they won't be getting them until 10-13:eek: I said, the website showed available in store.
at this point, I have to make the decision to wait because I was starving and wanted to go home and eat, or try the next BB (which would be more out of the way, and towards more rush hour traffic) but I would need to stop and get gas, extending the fiasco.
on the way to the third BB (and after getting gas) - I remember that near the third BB, there was a game store (GS, EB), so I look for that and find it. it just so happens it near the BB. the CR said it was sold out. now I look across the parking lot, where the BB sits and wonder if it's even worth the 2 block drive at this point, since non of the other had it. but I decide to check anyways...
third BB - sitting right there on the shelf. dude who checked me out was shocked that it was there.

Saw you playing, what did you think? I played some of the FTE last night (Extra missions). Those are a blast too. My SP didn't save, so I have to start over (cept my achievements are still good), but i was going to redo lvl 1 anyway to practice.
Figured out how to do individual orders to FT Members. Select them, PUSH A, give order, then PUSH A again to deselect them and move on. I wasn't deselecting, so I would go on to the next guy, and both would do the same thing cause they were both selected.
Getting the hang of it now.
JuiceRocket 10-09-09, 12:06 PM The more I read and hear about this game, the more excited I am about it. Does anyone know if a demo is going to come out?
I may just have to pick this up this weekend...

alpha21 10-09-09, 12:19 PM I have almost no idea what I'm doing (mission wise). half the time, I don't know if I'm supposed to move forward toward something, or stay and defend (third mission, I think it was?). on (I think it was) the first mission, they say to mark with a IR strobe or smoke, neither of which I have, so what am I exactly suppose to do? so I just drop explosives on it, and call it a day. but was that really what I was to do? most missions would end in a FAIL, but I clueless as to why. did I not do something in time, if so, what? I'm sure the strategy guide will help, but it'd be nice if it was explained in more detail in the game.
I kinda understand the commands. I even figured out how to issue commands to one particular teammate.
can you select a different character? or do you do that at the very beginning of the campaign, and can't change again?
I've heard lots of complaints about it taking too many shots to drop the enemy. my only issue is that when they go down, I can't tell if they are dead, or just chillin. so I spend the next minute trying to line up a shot (trying to factor in bullet drop), when I should be focusing on not getting flanked.
some of the AI, sometimes had no idea I was standing directly in front of them.
one, I shot dead, but he just stood there like a statue. so I unloaded on him from almost point blank, but there was no hit indicator, so obviously he was dead. 2 seconds after firing, I hear chinese talk and blam, a head shot. it wasn't from anybody else being around, it was from this bugged dead guy.
I couldn't for the life of me, figure out how to get out of a jeep, the first time I was in one. I don't claim to be the brightest bulb in the drawer;) but damn, figuring out controls are quite the curve.
I'm expecting the game to get much better, as I understand it more, and after doing some co-op.
ultracat 10-09-09, 12:29 PM I did notice (IMHO) a HUGE issue with the game: Its a game designed around combat at a distance but not everyone has a scope in co-op. I played two maps in co-op with the scope and on the third all I had was a machine gun...
OMG you are so right. On my co-op team the other night we were all fighting to not get stuck with the machine gun. We all found that gun completely useless and the first thing we would do if we had it was look for an ammo box with a different gun in it.
To the last poster - just hit A to get out of a vehicle.
alpha21 10-09-09, 12:38 PM To the last poster - just hit A to get out of a vehicle.I figured that out, after getting lit up like a xmas tree:o
also, as a passager in the jeep (not driving, nor on the 50), I can't shoot? hell, I couldn't even look left. and after my move command, caused the driver to run into a tree, it made it more difficult to get off said tree, without the ability to look left. just seemed really screwy.
mind you, all this was on that small island, which is basically a tutorial, with almost zero tutelige. so I was REALLY new to what was going on.
OMG you are so right. On my co-op team the other night we were all fighting to not get stuck with the machine gun. We all found that gun completely useless and the first thing we would do if we had it was look for an ammo box with a different gun in it.
To the last poster - just hit A to get out of a vehicle.
You guys are correct. It is really only good for surpressing fire, or returning fire at muzzle flashes. I've killed many bad guys with it, but only after spraying a target area ( ie luck).:D
dobieck1 10-09-09, 12:43 PM The more I read and hear about this game, the more excited I am about it. Does anyone know if a demo is going to come out?
I may just have to pick this up this weekend...

Last word was no console demo
dobieck1 10-09-09, 12:53 PM I have almost no idea what I'm doing (mission wise). half the time, I don't know if I'm supposed to move forward toward something, or stay and defend (third mission, I think it was?). on (I think it was) the first mission, they say to mark with a IR strobe or smoke, neither of which I have, so what am I exactly suppose to do? so I just drop explosives on it, and call it a day. but was that really what I was to do? most missions would end in a FAIL, but I clueless as to why. did I not do something in time, if so, what?
Many times when the PLA fall they are bleeding out. I sometimes pop one more cap in em to expediate the process!
At the beginning of each mission, you are always the leader, so you get we he has. Mission 1, I don't remember anything about a strobe. I just blew all the primary and secondary objectives up with C4. Strat guide will help a ton.
Did you do the codes for the extra missions? Those would be fun on co-op. They are fairly short and really fun.
alpha21 10-09-09, 01:00 PM Many times when the PLA fall they are bleeding out. I sometimes pop one more cap in em to expediate the process! I know, I just suck at aiming, so it's not as easy as that, for me. I may need to use my other (non CoD4) controller, it has tighter (non drifting) thumbsticks

Scott Simonian 10-09-09, 01:01 PM I'll happily take the SAW off anyone else if they don't want it. I've always been good with a SAW, haven't used it yet in this game but I'm sure I would do some damage. :)
The problem with this game is you need either a really big screen or really high resolution ...or both. Playing the old game at 1600x1200 made long distance shooting easier as that guy 200m away wasn't just a cluster of 2 or 3 pixels. Heheh. I don't know all you guys are able to play this on anything smaller than a 65" screen. I am playing it on a 100" screen so I got a leg up there. Again, hand me the SAW. :D I know several members here play on projectors too so that should help. Good luck to those of you on smaller screens.
Played some more last night. Still just effing around the first level 'Dragon Rising'. I used to do this with the old games too. Even if I die or lose a bunch of time redoing a part I don't get too frustrated. I just try again and do it different. Anyway, spent most of the late evening teaching myself how to use the commands effectively. Once you get the hang of it you can get your team to do some pretty smart stuff. Obviously, you have to be tactical in your approach to succeed. The Run n' Gun strategy won't get you a few feet in this game.
Spent a little while trying to pilot the helicopter. Im usually good at flying these things but man is it a PITA to land. Keeps wanting to flip over or roll backwards or something. Annoying as hell but I am sure I will get a hang of it soon. Driving is kind of a bi*ch too. Why the eff can't I use the right stick to look around? Argh!
Love running into random weapon crates laying around on the map. Check out a box to the west of the first map. Right below (on the map) and on the hill above one of the first SAM sites you'll find is a box with a Marksman M4, Marksman M16, and an M82 (the big .50cal sniper rifle everyone loves). That momma really delivers the hurtin'.
EDIT: those of you who have unlocked (or used the codes) for the extra single missions, you gotta try out 'Debris Field'. A short mission that has you on a tall grass field with some blown up tanks. Up ahead is a headgrow and some trees. There are two or three APC's and a bunch of guys. You are given a AT-4 you get to blow up some APC's. Short but really frickin' fun.
formulanerd 10-09-09, 01:21 PM Alpha21..... RE: strobes, smoke
when you select the frag grenade, X will let you choose grenade type (similar to how you switch from FMJ to grenade launcher on an assault weapon), you can choose Smoke or IR beacon from there.
My only huge complaint is the lack of loadout selection.... many times you can find ammo crates early on, and at least switch from CQB (eotech reflex sight) to Marksman (1.5x red dot/acog) and that helps a bunch, but the maps are so large i'd almost rather roll with the M21 the entire time.... and you can't even as a friendly force to switch with you.... on the mission where you have to hold the beach head i literally had to kill a friendly sniper and take his M21 to beat the level.
My next minor complaint was also pointed out by Scott above.... no camera control while driving in 3rd person. this REALLY bothers me... sometimes when you're turning hard, you're ALMOST looking dead at the side of your vehicle and cannot see in front of you.... this is really bad.

I will be replaying mission 1, as I forgot to do the chopper flying. Also, will have to find those crates and grab me an M82. Haven't tried Debris Field yet, I have only tried the first 3. Passed 1 and 2, not 3 yet. I actually died 4 or 5 times before I figured out where guys were coming from in missoin 3, Ambush!
Replicant Nexus6 10-09-09, 01:31 PM As many of you have said, once you start getting better with your AI orders, it gets even more fun.
Visual death confirmation (having to hoof it to where you shot someone to check if they're dead versus just incapacitated\bleeding out) is another added realism touch that I appreciate. Im surprised they even gave a red X blip on a scope to let you know when you've mortally hit someone.
And... HOLY TERRIFYING GUNSHIP FIRE on the second level!!!! My heart was literally pounding listening to death rain fall from the sky, dirt kicked up in my face and screen shaking, as I tried to keep me and my squad cool laying in the grass out of sight when that bastard lights up the area.
Feels like the closest to war Ill get this go round. I can feel the paranoia of "is the area clear? Am i putting myself\squad in danger? Is some jackass not covering his sector right and am I about to get my head erased?"... Somehow makes me appreciate even more the horror our soldiers put themselves thru for us. If a game can make me feel this way, can you imagine(if you havent experienced it in war yourself) being in THOSE situations?:eek::(

yea, that part kind of sucked until i figured it out.
90% of them are coming from where your APC starts lighting them up at the very start
http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/4514/15766509.jpg
this is where i killed a teammate sniper (one comes from the helo drop-off in the bottom of the pic)
then i clear out the 10% on the side really fast, and just make sure that top front never gets penetrated... the sniper is great because you can stop them at 300-200 yards, vs waiting for them to get within 100 yards and give them the chance to rush you.
if a few enemies get in the box, the mission is over, even if you coudl have easily killed them... it's kinda dumb but once you figure it out, its really easy to keep them out.
you can also set up claymores at the beginning near key choke points on the perimeter
alpha21 10-09-09, 02:00 PM I should be on after the Twins game (approx 8:30 cst).

Sorry, I was on the tail end of a twelver last night so my performance surely suffered, near the end. I had the tether death too which was nice! Anyway, hope to play again soon. Gonna start getting through the SP campaign today.

debating currently. It's between paying property tax and this

you just need to play a little more tactical, stick with the group, concentrate on objectives and not every soldier on the battlefield.... and if you're the medic you gotta be prepared to be healing, you were doing great for a while, but started straying off and getting killed or not healing, way out on your own.
great games though, either way its great playing with real people vs AI

yea, i know that (the achieve says destroy the radio tower and the general with a single JDAM), i just get no indication of having a JDAM available, though both times i was a little hasty in killing the general... i'm guessing you have to try and follow him without him knowing
that level is sweet though, 50cal sniper, thermal scope, nighttime... i had 46 sniper kills... some as many as 700meters away

I just finished this level tonight with my brother. We actually shot one guy and that was at the beach on top of the hill. We basically went stealth througout the whole level to get the achievement. Now ready to play that level and go all out on them fools.

We got the achievement Two Birds, One Stone(your fireteam eliminated Han and the radio station with one JDAM). After that we simply just avoided the patrols to the extraction point. One of the key things about this game is not actually following the patch to checkpoints but doing a around about to it when it comes to stealth. My brotherand I actually timed the shot at the same time to hit the spotter. One in the chest and the other with a head blown off. Good times.
formulanerd 10-11-09, 01:46 AM i didnt even get an option to use a JDAM, and i dont follow the routes cause i'm playing hardcore (and you cant see them)
JuiceRocket 10-13-09, 09:37 AM I've only just started playing this, and have only gotten to the 2nd mission on the island (the tutorial I think), where you go in covert. Amazingly fun game, I'm really loving it, but have a few questions.
Is there any way to play Hardcore (I think that's the level below Experienced) with no HUD? I'd like to have respawns (at least one...) without the HUD, but I'm not thinking that's possible.
Do you get any sort of penalty for friendly fire or a loss of a teammate?
Thanks!

it's all or nothing... i'd rather play hardcore, but with the hit detection on this game you HAVE to have the indicator that says you hit/killed the enemy.... i wish you could sort of "choose your assists", like a racing game.... i'd love to play with just one or two assists on.
as for friendly fire, no penalties. in coop you could be auto-kicked if the server is set up for that, but other than that, no penalties.
Scott Simonian 10-13-09, 01:31 PM That's a little feature from the old PC version of OFP (not sure if the PC version of OFP2 has it). In the main menu you could set the difficulty with a preset or make a custom difficulty by manually selecting which feature you wanted on or off.
I am the same way. I'd like to have the hit detector on with checkpoint but also turn off the HUD. Maybe we can lobby for it in a patch,eh? :D
JuiceRocket 10-13-09, 02:11 PM Thanks guys. Bummer about the HUD/difficulty level. I found the HUD to be too distracting to game with, but without it the game seems to require a good hour or so each round - and it's tough for me to dedicate that much uninterrupted time to my 360.
I don't mind not knowing if I've hit the enemy or not (unless my guy says he's down). I like that I'm still tense if I'm shooting at someone and I think they go down. I tend to wait a good amount of time, and sometimes send my squad near the area to see if they draw any fire. Hence my question about friendly fire/team deaths.
Or...is the hit detection when either my character (or my squad) tells me someone is down?
-JR
Scott Simonian 10-13-09, 02:21 PM I haven't noticed if there are any penalties for friendly fire at all. Other than having one less team member, I guess...
The 'hit indicator' we mentioned is a white or red series of dots that appear when you hit a bad guy or mortally wound him. It's pretty useful but not required to be effective. It's just nice to know you put that guy down for good. :)

Awesome, I'll look at the 1st page at your post, I'm sure I missed them when I first started in on this thread! Yup, we were doing a lot of keeping your heads down last night. I love the tension this game creates, it's awesome.

Thanks Scott, sounds like a plan! We got partially through the very first mission, but got a bit gung-ho and tried to run through enemy fire to get to a jeep. We were unsuccessful...
We also played the 2nd mission (the night one - "Blinding the dragon?"), and JUST missed out on the 5 minutes we had to destroy the missles. We made it all the way to the 1st checkpoint (or objective - the missle truck) without being detected, but apparently our stealthy approach simply ate up too much time.
We've been killing off our AI teammates right at the start of the game, only because we found it easier to go in as a 2 man team.
Has anyone noticed a "Shots fired!" glitch? Three different times one of our characters (either myself or my friend) would start repeating "Shots fired!" over and over for a good minute or more. We couldn't figure out what was causing it. It only occured on the very first map, and only when we got close to the main port town, but it was very annoying.

dobieck1 10-14-09, 11:06 AM The AI are great if you know how to use them.
formulanerd 10-14-09, 01:49 PM the timed objectives really irk me... they're not timed at all... they're all run by invisible checkpoints.
on one mission for example, you have 10 minutes to destroy some AA... when you hit an invisible checkpoint near the village and magically you have 2 minutes left..... there is another checkpoint, regardless of how much time you took, that you can just lose the game.
syphon00 10-15-09, 02:05 PM what's final verdict on this one gents?
I'm still on the fence about getting because of all the bugs the reviews have been pointing out
Scott Simonian 10-15-09, 02:51 PM Depends on what you like, really. This isn't Halo/CoD so if that's the kind of gameplay you probably will not like this. If you like something that is a bit slower, smarter and more tactical then this would be right up your alley. I would say if you liked games like RB6/GRAW/Full Spectrum Warrior you would like this too.
I heard that there isn't going to be a demo so that makes it harder to "try" it before buying. You could always rent a copy too. ;) If you have a PC you could try a demo for the older OFP or ARMA, as long as your PC will run them. Those will be much harder than this as they streamlined this game pretty well (for good reasons, not exactly "dumbed down" but that could be argued) so the older games aren't as accessable but you get a feel for it.

MP is a problem right now, but I only really tried the first night. I guess it still need some work.
SP is awesome. So is Co-op. 4 of us hooked up last Friday and had a ton of fun. Would love to do it again with some of my new missions.
I, personally, haven't seen a lot of the bugs you are reading about. The AI is fine IF you know how to use them and just don't issue move or follow me orders all the time.
The game is very immersive, and, it can play out different each and every time you play. I would recommend it. I think its worth the money but thats me. It will only get better with the patches and DLC
See what Formula and Scott and some others in here think.

I would agree with all these points made by, Dobieck. I haven't tried the straight up MP modes yet other than co-op so I cannot comment on those. Co-op is teh $hit though! I haven't run into any bugs really either which is saying A LOT for any OFP game. They have always been buggy and I this one is pretty clean as far as I am aware. The team AI aint perfect but as long as you know how to use them they are very effective. The game IS very immersive. Great sound effects and I think the graphics are great. Each level can be played out differently and that's pretty cool.
oo7evan 10-15-09, 03:09 PM Sounds like Co-Op is the real deal for this game. I think I'll pick up two copies (one for my buddy so we can play Co-Op) and a copy of ODST with TRU's Buy 2 Get 1 Free deal this week.
dobieck1 10-15-09, 03:20 PM I would get a copy of the strat guide as well. Tons of good info in there.

cool, thanks for the suggestion, yeah I do like my tactical shooters but I'm also down with the more arcade like FPS, the reviews just made it sound like the game was rushed out and very unpolished
Scott Simonian 10-15-09, 04:49 PM It definitely is not a rushed product. I think what they meant by that is that there is little "presentation" to the final product. There are no fancy cutscenes with expensive voiceovers and all that. All you get is a written briefing before a mission. Once you begin a mission you are placed in position without any cool fly in or anything like that. I would have liked it if there were but there wasn't. I won't lose any sleep. Also the voiceovers in game are nothing to write home about but the game isn't all about guys with personality like in something as BF:BC or something like that, for example. There really doesn't need to be though. The focus is on the mission and how you want to take on the objective. In this regard, the game is fantastic.
formulanerd 10-15-09, 05:55 PM there are glitches, but the game feels pretty good over all... i went ahead and finished it today... i'll be replaying a few missions for secondary achievements, but i wont be replaying on hard....
i'd say for $60, you'd really have to want a shooter simulation.
for $40, about anyone who enjoys modern war oriented games would be satisfied.
i wouldnt look too much into COOP, as it only amplifies the bugs that are in the game.... and i haven't even considered playing the game online, i can only imagine it's a mess (adversarial)

I have to disagree, the co-op is one the best things about this game, there are some great moments sharing the "difficulty" of this game with friends online. I was really worried that there would be connection/lag issues since most of my friends are in the UK but so far we have had no problems with it, hit detection seems spot on. I have only played 1 multiplayer match but at the time I had no clue what I was doing so I need to revisit that before I form an opinion.
That being said, the lobby system sucks pond water, mainly because there is no way to set up a private game with just friends (host has to constantly kick other players that join while waiting for friends to arrive). And yes there are some bizarre bugs like respawning with no weapon in your hands (it's there, you just see your hands holding nothing), you have to switch to another gun to get the "visual" back. A rifle I took out of an ammo crate made no sound when fired (this lasted the whole time I had it and there was no silencer on it).
Personally I think Corperate pressured them to release this game early to take advantage of all of us that are jonesing for MW2 knowing full well they would sell many copies to those that wanted something to hold them off until MW2's release (1 reason I bought it).
But I have to say this game grows on you, the more I play it (single player or co-op), the more I like it.
TRALFAZ 10-15-09, 08:17 PM That being said, the lobby system sucks pond water, mainly because there is no way to set up a private game with just friends
Yes the lobby does suck but in the "advanced" settings, you can set up private slots for friends. No kicking required. :) Now if you only went back to the lobby after a round instead of being booted or forced to the next map. The multiplayer especially "Infiltration" is a blast IMO. If anyone wants to learn the ins and outs of multiplayer, look for the BONE SANDWICH server, I'll be happy to run you through it.

during coop i dont have an issue with hit detection, but tons of objectives botch themselves (i.e, blow something up... in SP it blows up fine, in coop 6 rockets and every grenade we have just wont blow it up), or i'll be healing a buddy, then i'm unable to move.... he has to kill me, then i have to wait to respawn..... countless checkpoint errors really break this game..... try playing the last mission in coop, it really blows..... actually, after 10+ tries we finally took out the AA, only to have a helicopter that just wouldn't take off (and yes, i can fly the chopper, really well too)
i'd rather play coop vs singleplayer in ANY game, but i will not be playing coop in this game anymore after countless hours wasted.
i'd also like to note, that the healing glitch can happen everywhere, but not every map is glitched as bad as others in other respects.... i've played a couple maps that played pretty well with little to no issue.

Very valid points here formulanerd, I have not yet run into some of these issues but I'm sure I will eventually.
I do enjoy a good laugh & so far playing with buddies in this game has given me quite a few of them (shooting a friend in the back of the head with 50. cal in a humvee to steal his sniper gun is always great fun). ;)

JuiceRocket 10-16-09, 09:38 AM infrasonic, sorry for missing your invites last night! I would have loved to have joined, but my brother-in-law was actually using my Xbox to play with a friend on my account. I'll be around all weekend, so send me another invite when you're online!
Thanks,

dobieck1 10-16-09, 09:42 AM I would like to do Hip point on Co-op with the crew here.
Scott Simonian 10-16-09, 02:27 PM No problem, Rocket. I'll most likely be free all weekend as well so I am sure we will get some games in. I'm down to play, fo sho. :p
dobieck1 10-16-09, 02:55 PM Well, since I was up late last Friday playing with you guys, I'll see if I can jump on tonight. See how early I can shuffle off the GF to bed.

What difficulty do you play at? What few hours I've put in so far have been on...that non-hud difficulty. My buddy and I have been playing at a crawl, but a tense, fun crawl!

I've been playing my SP campaign on Normal now and I have played the co-op portion with FormulaNerd and Dobieck on Normal as well. I liked the hit indicater but I could play on the harder difficulties too. So far I am only on mission 5 or something but that is only because I have this thing about games and not wanting to blow them out after a week of picking them up.
I savor all the games I like. I still, to this day, haven't beat the main campain in Fallout3 or played any of the DLC (except for Anchorage) for it either. Not that I don't want to ... I just want something left when I go back to play the game.
*ahem* So I am not very far in the campaign for OFP2. :p
ultracat 10-16-09, 03:33 PM I'll be playing tonight and Saturday some if anyone wants to do some co-op. I still need to do ~ 1/2 of the missions to get all the achievements. I really like this game, it's not perfect, but it's pretty fun. It's really satisfying to finish a mission with all primary and secondary objectives complete!
dobieck1 10-16-09, 03:38 PM Infra, so you haven't played Hip Point yet? That one would be awesome in co-op. Its the night mission to take out the Fuel Generator
Scott Simonian 10-16-09, 03:44 PM The last level I played was the one where you take over an airfield. So whatever mission that was. I don't think I've done Hip Point yet but Formula was telling me about it that night we played.
JuiceRocket 10-17-09, 11:52 AM I'll play anything Scott, I just wanted to make sure that being terrible at the game won't drive you guys to nuts. I'm still trying to get used to the controls. ;)
Sorry I missed you guys last night, I didn't get online until later - I was caught watching "The Proposal" with my wife. Quality Time requirements. ;)
If anyone is around this evening, give me a shout, I'll be online!

Hip Point is mission 6. Took me a while to fig out where that small building was. Note to self... recon with binoculars prior to entering the fuel depot would have helped :o.

We ended up having company so I wasn't able to play last night. Should be on tonight after 10 pm est though
How are the multiplayer modes Annihilation and Infiltration?
How are the multiplayer modes Annihilation and Infiltration?
I set up a private match in Annihilation with 3 other friends last night, 2 on each team. We were all in party chat & laughed till we cried. With all the extra AI players running around it was fun trying to single out the humans. Got 4 sniper kills on my best UK buddy in a row & he was getting pissed but it just made the rest of us (and him), laugh harder.
I'm liking this game more and more.
Very nice, i'll have to pick it up. I wasn't sure if the 4 vs. 4 with the bots wasn't going to be fun.
JuiceRocket 10-21-09, 08:56 AM I've been stuck on the third mission for a while (I'm blanking on the name, but it's where you start on the beach, take out 3 groups of AT gunners, then move to take out spotters who are sending mortar rounds on your APCs, then move into the town to take out 3 groups of enemies who have ground to air rockets, then defend the town against a counterattack.
I'm pretty sure I'm close to completing the last objective, so I'm fine there, but I keep having to replay the map because of the third objective - moving into the town to take out the three groups of guys with the ground to air weapons. Basically, sometimes my guys (APC's) will storm into the base and take out 85% of the enemy, which is a huge help. Other times they'll just sit back and I'm stuck trying to eliminate all 20+ enemies, who tend to flank me and take me out.
For those who have played this level, can you give me any tips? Am I flanking so far around the town that I'm not triggering the APC's to move forward all the time? .
Thanks!

If you are talking about the town portion, have 1 guy mount the machine gun overlooking the hill to the North I think. Tell the other 2 to defend his position. You then concentrate on taking out the guys on the west hill (left of your men), and some guys coming over the hill directly in front of you (your men's focus). Take out any guys with AT rockets ASAP.
Also, once ordering your men, set up some claymores around the buildings to the left (West I think) in town. You have about 2-3 mins before the dudes start rolling in. Also, grab the PLA marksmen weapon from the crates by the Machine gun emplacement to have some extra firepower.

I'm thiinking it's a different level, since I don't have claymores, and the counter-attack originally comes the south - but you just taught me that I can order my men to use an emplaced weapon!!!! Awesome! :) I'll do that tonight, thanks!

My bad. I'm home now, so I have the strat guide. Its the South where you want your boys to watch with the emplaced gun, and you watch the East (southeast really). The North the direct East, the other marines should take out for you.
You do have claymores. Hold B. Click down to mines (then click X to change types of mines), you have like 3 of them. Unless I grabbed them from a crate somewhere but I had them.

Yet again I learn something - I didn't realize you could hold X to change mines/C4, etc. I knew you could do it with your primary weapon to change ROF or type of ammo, but I never thought to try it anywhere else...sigh.
Thanks again!

You can change your rate of fire on some guns by pressing D pad left too

My mistake, I meant that was how I was changing my ROF, and I didn't realize that X did anything during your selection.
Thanks for the tips, I think I almost got past the level last night on my 2nd try. The first time I got pinned down just getting into the town and got shot as I tried to bolt to another spot for cover.
A friend of mine is going to be around tonight, so I'm going to enlist him to help me get past this level. If anyone here wants to help me, I'm open. This level is fun put proving to be a challenge for me!

Played my first hardcore annihilation last night, oh boy that was fun. No HUD & no 3/4 view in vehicles, jumped in a jeep and promptly got stuck on some rocks because you can’t look left or right, too funny. But after about 10 minutes I realized that not having a radar to point out where the enemy was evened up the playing field. The next 50 minutes was a blast sneaking around sniping, getting sniped and watching the tracer’s arc over the river realistically. Great fun!
Now if CM would just fix the MP bugs, unlock more sections of the map and make the Chinese AI players STOP crying when they get scared (funny only the 1st time you hear it), OPF would be even more fun to play.
The patch is supposedly out today and the new DLC is out tomorrow for the 360 and guess what? They are charging 400 MS points for the DLC! This is a game that only has 2 "TDM" maps to begin with and now they are about to release/unlock a few more and they want money for it...amazing. Doesn't MW2 have like 16 MP maps from the get go?
VERY dissapointed with Codemasters...moot point after next Tuesday I guess.

400 MSP isn't all that bad for 6 new levels and a new mode 'Island Tour'. I paid more than that for just two mixes in DJ Hero last week. :p
Even though it's only 400 points it's the principal of the matter. OFP was released unfinished early to try and at least make some money a month before MW2 came out. Anyone who has it knows this game could have benefited from 6 more months of testing & tweaking.
Here's what I think is just intolerable.
1. Half the features promised are not in the game, the box even states; "Wage open world warfare across all of 220 km of Skira". What is not said is that there is no "open" about it, there is no free roam unless you pay for the DLC which finally does include free roam but guess what? Free roam has no enemies to shoot, yippie, so much for open world warfare.
2.The MP version of TDM comes with only 2 maps, then 3 weeks after the game is released CodeMasters wants you to pony up an additional 400 points for 6 more maps and free mode. Can you imagine if Infinityward pulled this trick? (the maps are squared-off sections of the island Skira, your play is limited to the area in the square).
3. The DCL is really not DLC at all, it's just code to unlock features that were already in the source game, if you look at the file size for the 360 OFP DLC it's only like 9 mb, I've seen gamer themes larger than that.
I could go on but if you want even more examples go read what the majority of people who want to like this game but are not happy with the current situation say;

Already traded this in for credit towards MW2. It was alright, but not enough people playing it and the interface and match-making were a little clunky. And "hell no" on paid DLC only a couple of weeks after the full retail game comes out! What is with these developers? They think DLC is some new gold rush for their shareholders. Dream on.

I wouldn't go as to say that at all. The new levels use resources from the original game. They are just new missions so you don't need huge amounts of data to make that. Now if they had all sorts of new dialog or new objects and it were that small...then I could agree with what you say. These are just quick missions so none of that is needed.
I do agree that the "fight over all 200km of Skira" line is at fault as you cannot really do that such as you said in the shipped game. The free roam is kinda boring but I had fun flying around.
