View Full Version : Timeframe for hackers to get around April 2007 AACS change?
darinp2 04-20-07, 03:25 PM I've read that HD DVDs starting next week (April 24th) will include new keys that go along with the revocation to try to fix the issue with hackers being able to get around AACS and get content in the free and clear, that started being publicly discussed around the end of last year. I'm not sure if BDs will also have new keys starting the 24th. Either way, I'm curious as to how long people around here think it will take before one of the discs with the key change (HD DVD or BD) will have its movie content put out in the free and clear. I would really like to know how long the studios think it will take the other side given that it took close to 4 months on their end to get this change out.
Since I don't frequent the doom9 site (other than following links here) or other sites where people post these movies, I'll have to go by what others say as far as when one gets put up, or whether the key revocation is holding up. And for the time I'll use how long from April 24th, even if somebody gets a disc early.
Note that this is a public poll and will close in 3 days, since I don't want people to be able to vote if we get the answer.

krinkle 04-20-07, 03:34 PM You should put separate choices for HD-DVD and Blu-ray.
Now that the HDDVD 360 add-on firmware has been completely cracked, all HDDVD movies released will be cracked within 24 hours. The hacker now completey own the HDDVD system by having complete control over the XBOX 360 HD_DVD add-on drive.
Blu-ray will take longer or may never be cracked we don't know.
Just to be clear the hackers have publicly stated that there is nothing that can be done to protect HD-DVD discs anymore short of completely cancelling the 360 add-on drive.

...Just to be clear the hackers have publicly stated that there is nothing that can be done to protect HD-DVD discs anymore short of completely cancelling the 360 add-on drive. If you mean the VolumeID discovery without AACS authorization - your statement is not quite correct:
other keys are needed to decrypt the content.
Diogen.
Mr. Hanky 04-20-07, 04:17 PM I don't know what to think, given all the conflicting info over the x360 add-on.
I do think it would be cool/funny if there was some sort of "Jack Bauer 24"-style countdown timer somewhere, to reference this zany phenomenon.
Maxpower1987 04-20-07, 04:18 PM I say it will take about 30 mins, all they need is a modded X360 add on drive, of which there are many.
Rigby Reardon 04-20-07, 05:07 PM I don't know what to think, given all the conflicting info over the x360 add-on. There isn't really any conflicting info. There are just some Bluray fans trying to spread FUD. The Xbox drive hack is actually quite unimportant for decrypting discs (since there are other ways to obtain the Volume ID). How hard it will be for the hackers to decrypt the discs with the new AACS keys depends entirely on how well the WinDVD programmers have done their job obfuscating the new player keys in the new software release. That is true for both HD-DVD and BD.
I have two 24th April titles already (one HD, one BD) and they are still decryptable with exisiting methods (either via aacskeys or AnyDVD HD).
All this shows is that studios/content creators/hardware creaters are simply wasting time and money and the only ones hurt are legitimate consumers. Pirates are going to pirate, and they will get around whatever the industry throws at them.
darinp2 04-22-07, 03:59 PM I have two 24th April titles already (one HD, one BD) and they are still decryptable with exisiting methods (either via aacskeys or AnyDVD HD).The question is then whether they work in the older version of WinDVD. That is, whether they had a key revokation done. If they don't work on the old stuff in a normal way because of key revokation, but the hackers get them in the free and clear, then I would say that will qualify.
As far as the voting, I don't think it will take long, but voted < 1 week since it includes the weekend. I'll be a little surprised if it takes longer than that.

Personally I think and hope AnyDVD will release an update within 24 hours, if it is even affected at all.
Slim GoodBooty 04-22-07, 10:41 PM If what House says is true, they either didn't change the keys, or it didn't matter.
trbarry 04-25-07, 07:32 AM I haven't been following this as much recently but I just did a quick scan over at doom9 and it does not look like there is yet any new security out or any new undecryptable discs.
So I guess April 24 has come and gone without incident.

talon95 05-14-07, 07:03 PM I think this poll needs to be changes. It's needs an entry that reads "xxx time *before* movies are released."
From what I read on the Slysoft forum, they've already got AnyDVD HD working with the first Matrix movie and it's not officially out yet! Doh!
Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions have new AACS. So does Letters from Iwo Jima HD-DVD. WinDVD and some PowerDVDs have been revoked (7.3 required an update before I could play Matrix 2 + 3). The first Matrix works just fine though. I got my copies on Thursday (so you could measure from there I guess, I think that's when most people were getting their sets).
It seems to be now, yes, but not the second or third which can't be right now.
Jboy001 05-15-07, 03:44 PM Does that mean The Matrix was mastered last year and sitting somewhere like Harry Potter is for the USA?
sigh.... at least it's coming out now.....

No, it means sometime between the date the disc was made and the date it was available in retail someone ripped it and posted it on the internet.
I show the hddvd rip was uploaded on the 14th, there is an hdtv version that has been out longer.
MickeyDora 05-16-07, 05:51 PM New AnyDVD HD beta out that claims to work on new titles.
Time? First new title out on May 22nd. New beta released May 16th.
AnyDVD have just released a new version which supports the new AACS titles. I can confirm that Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions, Flags of Our Fathers, and Letters from Iwo Jima decrypt fine now (when before they wouldn't). So what was that, five/six days?
MickeyDora 05-16-07, 06:00 PM Technically it was before the official release. ;)

Well, I think their copy protection efforts are futile. OTOH, I think Universal is a bit more paranoid than some other studios and if this causes them to put off their planned onslaught of releases in the next months it will hurt HD DVD somewhat in the format war.
But I guess it was inevitable.

I was thinking the same thing, except Fox instead of Universal. Are they ever going to release titles ever again at this rate?
Low Roller 05-16-07, 07:23 PM AnyDVD have just released a new version which supports the new AACS titles. I can confirm that Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions, Flags of Our Fathers, and Letters from Iwo Jima decrypt fine now (when before they wouldn't). So what was that, five/six days?LOL! I think AACS is up 'sewage' creek.....Next in queue: BD+
BTW, I thought this update would hold out a bit longer. Nice job, AACS LA.
Now, I wonder how long it will be before an open hack appears, as AnyDVD isn't giving out details how they did this.
