Mind you, I am not talking about build-in DACs (everyone knows they are below average).
I tried to compare
1. Content Streamer (D-Link 320) via digital out
2. CD recreated from MP3 played through simple Sony SACD player via digital out.
3. SPDIF out of my Fujitsu Laptop (Microsoft Media player v 7)

All sources were hooked to Adcom DAC->Krell 400ix->Gershman Avantgarde.

Difference was tremendous, and not on audiophile "subtle" level but rather huge. D-Link was way worse then CD (mind you recreated from MP3) or Laptop. "Fake" CD for whatever reason came first (I cannot understand that). Streamer was by far the worst.

I wonder if my streamer D->PCM conversion is not great. Does anyone knows if there are differences in sound quaility of streamers (I am only care about music (huge collection incoded in 192 k MP3) and perhaps pictures once in a blue moon) and are there any "good sounding" streamers?

This is probably what you are looking for...

or less impressive but cheaper...

Thank you.
I'll research both options. I think if build-in DAcs are adequate then there is no need to MP3 transcoding to PPCM with corresponding strange loss of sound quality

Not trying to start a flame war; but, if you actually care about music quality, why are you using a lossy format like MP3? Why aren't you using one of the lossless compression formats?

By the way, Slimdevices' SqueezeBox also outputs a very good digital audio stream.
