View Full Version : Which of these SVS-subs will work best with music?
audiophile82 04-21-07, 03:09 AM Iīm looking for a good sub to complement my 2 channel setup. I have Focal 1007 standmounts and a Bryston amp that plays extraordinary well together. However, I am missing bass below 35 hz on some tracks so Iīm looking for a sub that will blend in well with my mains, go deep and with control and one that doesnīt occupy half of my living room. My room is today ca. 20 sq.meters but I need one that can easily fill 30 sq.meters.
My 2 candidates so far are either the SB12+ (Nice tight sounding) and one of the PCI-tube subs. But I havenīt heard any of the tube subs. Are they good for music compared to other SVS models?
Help is appreciated!
Hiroyuki Sakai 04-21-07, 06:26 AM I would have to say go for the SB12+ or PCi 20-39 + BFD 1124 eq.

Hi
If you listen to pipe organ music, the SVS 16-46PCi would be a good choice. If not, the 20-39PCi is a better choice. I have an SVS 20-39PCi that I got as B-Stock, and it is in perfect condition. I paid $550 plus shipping.

Macfan424 04-21-07, 11:31 AM Depending on your musical tastes, a 25-31 could be a very good choice, as well. I love pipe organs, so for me the 16-46 was the only option I seriously considered, but there isn't a whole lot of music below the 25-31's reach, and it will play louder than it's larger siblings, if that's important to you.
I suggest contacting SVS directly, telling them your room size and music preferences. They'll be more than cooperative in helping you make the right choice.

bgillyjcu 04-21-07, 08:18 PM My Choice....25-31+ or the 20-39+
OR
SB-12+ if you need something SMALL
mojomike 04-22-07, 08:24 PM If you really want stunning 2ch bass for music, try stereo pair of SB12. Smooth, tight, accurate, SQ good as just about anything out there for music. It also is very flexible in how you can hook it up and configure it. If there is no HT duty involved, an SB or a pair of SBs is a very natural choice.

No comparison, the sealed SB12 is by far the best for music.
The next flattest FR comes from the PB-10.

Hi
You should contact Ron or Tom at SVS. They can tell you the best choice for your situation. You can contact them by email.

I second that opinion!

I agree with this too.

uhh,
This thread is asking which SVS is "BEST" for music.
Of course, they all work fine for music. But, some are slightly better than others. Just because one person owns a particular model does not automatically make it best for any one purpose.
....to elaborate
Remember 99.99% of music does not need much if anything below 25 Hz, but does require the flattest FR possible. This is where the SB12 shines and is a much better fit over anything that extends lower in the SVS lineup. The extension just isn't necessary for music reproduction and sacrfices some linearity in response to achieve that extension.
In addition the SB12 has one of the more advanced plate amps to help compensate for room sizes helping to limit its response (boominess). The SB12 also has balanced inputs which are more popular among higher end gear.
The PB-10 is the exception to the extension rule in the SVS lineup. While being ported and having native extension to 19Hz anechoic, it still has excellent linearity.

Oh Yeah!!! 20-39 PC++ with the 12.3 upgrade
AWESOME!!! :D :D :D
petergaryr 04-23-07, 07:34 AM I have both a 20-39PCi which I use for HT and when listening to multi-channel music (mostly SACD and DVD-a).
I also have a 20-39 PC+ in a separate 2.1 system that I use for listening to standard CDs.
I'm not sure you could go wrong with either.
This is an interesting thread, since I often read ones from people who want to know how to disable the sub when listening to music. Frankly, I can't imagine NOT using one. When the full organ kicks in during the Saint-Saens 3rd, or the last movement of the Pines of Rome or the end of the Mahler 2nd there is nothing like a pressurized room!
Mathesar 04-23-07, 09:51 AM Ive never heard SVS subs but from my experiance comparing music with my HSU 3.3 sub set at 18hz Max extension mode vs. 25hz Max output mode I find the 25hz tuned setting sounds best with music. So I would most likely go with an 25hz tuned SVS if my main concern was music.
Your best bet is to contact Ron or Tom at SVS.
Best Regards
