Just a quick question. Is it possible to connect a HDD DVD recorder in line with a Motorolla HD box.

I have a 37d90u set with a Motorolla HD STB (model # escapes me but it is not PVR just HD box) and would like to add a HDD recorder.

I thought of just trading in STB for the Motorolla PVR but it is easier and cheaper for me to try to add a recorder to the mix. Thanks.

Yes, you can do that. However, HDD/DVD recorders do not record HDTV or Dolby Digital 5.1. The DVRs provided by the cable company do record HDTV and Dolby Digital 5.1.

The cable company DVR will record two HD or SD channels at the same time, while simultaneously allowing you to watch a third, pre-recorded program. You can't do that with a HDD/DVD recorder.

Hmm, so HDD recorders do not record HD content? There isn't one HDD recorder on the market will record HD programming?

Thanks for the reply,btw.

Hmm, so HDD recorders do not record HD content? There isn't one HDD recorder on the market will record HD programming? There are no DVD recorders that will record high-definition. There is the Tivo Series3 DVR, but that is a $600 box with a monthly fee. Sony used to produce a HDTV DVR a few years ago, but they discontinued it early last year because they lost money on it.

Aside from the $600 Tivo Series3 and the $600 MSRP HDTV DVRs used by the cable companies, there are no other DVRs or HDD recorders in production that will record in high-definition. It's going to be awhile before we see inexpensive standalone recorders capable of recording in high-definition. By this Christmas, you should be able to buy a $500 box to do it, maybe $400 by Christmas 2008.
