View Full Version : LSI9's as Surrounds?

I currently have Polk LSI 9's as my front speakers, and love them. I have FXi3's as surrounds, Polk 303 Sub, and CSi as my center.

98% of my usage is audio, so theater is not a priority. I enjoy surround settings on my Denon 2807 (particulary 5 channel stereo lately), and I have SACD capability.

So my question is, would it make sense to get another set of LSI 9's as my surround/rear spreakers?

I can get a pair for a nice deal now, and I can get good stands to get them at the right height (shelves I mounted for FXi3's are too small).

Current setup is very enjoyable, so I'm thinking LSI9's in the back would make it that much better, since they'd match the fronts....that's my theory anyway, thoughts from somebody with more knowledge would be appreciated. Room is decent sized, probably not technically large enough for full potential of 4 of these speakers, in case that matters.

And while I'm at it, what about upgrading the center?

Thanks!

If that were my setup, my upgrade path would probably be the center channel next or the sub. The surrounds would be my last priority. You could put the FXI3s in Bipole mode and stuff them in the rear for a 7.1 setup if you do upgrade the sides. The LSI center channel is really nice and Polk subs are ok, but you can do a lot better for comparable money.

I disagree. The OP said this was mainly for music.

5 identical speakers for multichannel music is ideal. In the scenario you describe (2 more LSi9s), rsmccarthy, 4 identical speakers would be closer to that ideal than your current setup.

I do agree with the previous poster's recommendation of a better subwoofer.

Thanks for the advice. I figured identical speakers would be ideal, and an improvement. I believe I can also get a single LSI 9 for the center.

One more probably really silly question...any worries about powering 5 of those speakers from a Denon 2087? I realize there are limitations, though I'm not well versed in all the technology. My uneducated guess is, I could use 5 of them, I just will need to use caution on the volume knob!

Advice would be appreciated, as would maybe a link that could educate me on amps/watts/and the basics of properly powering loud speakers.

Thanks again!

Sorry I completely missed the "music" line. Yeah that'd be sweet all around to have identical speakers. If you visit the clubpolk forum you will see almost everyone on there mentions how the LSi line really opens up if you feed them proper power. They are rated 4 ohms, and your Denon will probably run them ok, but the universal opinion seems to be that if you can drive them with separates you will really make these speakers sing.

LSI9's need power for them to really open up. Get a mutichannel amp and you'll be amazed.

LSi9's all the way around Nice

That is the same system I am putting together. I just need to purchase a pre/pro and amps next.

Identical speakers all the way around for music, or movies is always the best way anyway. :D
