View Full Version : SVS Help Needed - buying 2 maybe
gobbluth 04-22-07, 01:38 PM I am thinking of getting some Paradigm Millenium speakers to keep wife happy. As such, I want to make sure I can fill out the low end well enough.
I do not understand the difference between the SVS PCi, PC-Plus and PC-Ultra (with respect to best value for money, is the PCi 'good enough' etc).
I was thinking I may want to purchase 2 SVS subs, to get more even balance, and help the smaller millenium speakers. Does that make any sense.
I want to keep costs reasonable, as the milleniums arent cheap.
So would 2 SVS 20-39PCi subs be good enough. Would 1 20-39PC-Ultra be better?
Anyone know about the discount for buying 2?

thanks in advance
Sycraft 04-22-07, 01:49 PM Well, one thing to note is that the Ultra subs aren't currently available. They are rolling out their new Ultra 13 line, but it isn't out yet so currently you can't buy an ultra, just the PCi and PC+. I haven't heard the different lines, I just bought one cold and opted for the PC+. One things the + and ultra lines do have that the PCi line doesn't is tunability. Rather than one port, they have three. You can put in port plugs and adjust the sonic filter to tune the rolloff of the sub. This is useful not only for extending the low end, but also for tuning to room gain. In the 20Hz setting, I have a peak up towards 20Hz when I actually measure in my room. In the 16Hz setting, it is much flatter. I've been listening back and forth trying to decide if I like the peak or not.
Basically, as you go up in the SVS lines you'll find that the subs are more powerful, have more features, and probably should have better sound. That isn't to say there's not reasons to get two subs though. Bass may not be easy to localise, but it isn't the case that you can't at all.
VOLKeith 04-22-07, 01:49 PM Copy and paste your thread in a email to SVS customer service and they will get back to you really fast. They will be honest in what you should get based on room size and listening habits.
jhan1000 04-22-07, 01:52 PM Agreed... SVS Customer Service (esp. Ed Mullen) will steer you in the right direction. Another benefit to the duals is that they may help flatten your in-room FR. Keep in mind that setting up dual subs can be a difficult and time consuming process.
I'm pretty sure the discount for returning customers is 10%. I do not know if SonicBoom offers the same discounts. That would be equal to a 5% discount on the total purchase price if you purchase two at once. I would recommend the + for tunability, more powerful amp, better driver and PEQ (if you get a premium finish). And that you just get one, then see if you need a second. Unless you can negotiate a better deal when buying two at once.
BTW, I had a 20-39+ in a very large space (>8,000cf) and it was not quite enough. I returned it for a +/2.
Hiroyuki Sakai 04-22-07, 04:03 PM Sonicboom audio offers discount. If you are in toronto area you get free shipping + 5%. Just email Mason to make sure.
dbacksfan51 04-22-07, 05:21 PM Are you sure that your Wife will be ok with 1 SVS sub, let alone 2. These things are big, and hard to hide. Currently I own a PB12-isd, and when the box showed up, I got the look. She has since then become OK with it, to the point I may upgrade to something bigger/ possibly duals. Granted the Tube based SVS's have a smaller footprint, then the PB series, but still big. Have you look at one of Paradigm's Seismic 12's? I've never heard one, but have been told they are good, and fairly small to keep the wife hapy
gobbluth 04-22-07, 05:33 PM well.. I have the PS1000 now... and was thinking upgrading to the PW2200... but I understand that thing is frickin huge, and though the smaller footprint of the SVS would make her happy.
madpoet 04-22-07, 06:50 PM If you have the space, I really recommend getting 2. When I got my second CS Ultra it let me tune them down to 16hz and still have an appreciable bass gain.

Your right, the PW2200 is big, it's dimensions are 19-1/2 x16-1/2 x22-3/4 in, but compare this to the 20-39pci, that has a 16in footprint. The PW2200 is only a 1/2 inch bigger than the 20-39pci. Granted the PW is deeper at almost 23 inches. But you will have a tube or 2 that is 39 inches tall. The Paradigm Sub that I was referring to was the Seismic 12. It is only a 14inch cube. Personally I would go with the SVS, but I would hate to have your wife pissed off after going with the Paradigm Millenium speakers that have the built in WAF. Either way, good choice going with the Paradigms, I have been a proud owner of Paradigm speakers for the last several years, and a SVS sub. Either way let us know what you decide to go with.

gobbluth 04-22-07, 11:15 PM Thanks all for your input.
See I was considering going with the Studio 60's, and 590... but in following the Millenia owners thread, a lot of people felt the Millenia were almost as capable as the 60's... with studio 60's I would have got either the PW or a single PC-Ultra... but thought if I went with the milleniums, I might want a second sub to bak em up... perhaps its just overkill... i could just get the Ultra with the mileenioums and it might be fine.
really im waffling at this point. I also think for my personal level of diminishing return, to just go with the Monitor series.... for the amount of time I get to really enjoy movies and music, with volume not turned down as not to wake the children... i dont know if spending so much is necessary

If the Millenia's sound almost as good as the 60's you are in for a Treat. I have the V3 Studio 60's, that I upgraded from Monitor 7's and was really impressed with them. My wife even could tell the difference, and she has a mild hearing loss. Also when i upgraded from the Monitor to the Reference series, There was a big difference in the quality of the Center Channel. The Reference was much clearer with dialogue then the Monitor.
Maybe you could buy one or 2 of those small indoor fake trees and cover the sides of the SVS' with camo? LOL
Could work.. If the SVS' (and/or the idea, hehe) don't work, definitely go for the Seismic 12.
