As a future Elite owner myself, I'm curious about everyone's experience with how loud the Elite is. I know some people have reported on the noise issue already. I'm sure a lot of us about to buy the Elite would like as much info as possible on this. We would really appreciate it. Thanks!

It isn't really loud. Even with Gears of War spinning the DVD drive and fans at max it's not
that loud.

I think some folks are looking for original 8-bit Nintendo quiet or something...

I read all about how loud the Xbox 360s were... bought my Premium back in early March,
fired it up, and laughed. I remember saying "That's loud?".

But, to each their own.

Mine isn't louder than my Premium is...but damn it's more annoying. Instead of a simple constant stream of white noise mine has a sort of oscillation to it. Wahhhhuh wahhhuh wahhhuh wahhhuh wahhhuh.

I'm going to see if Target has another to swap out with. Normall I could deal with it, but the oscillation makes this thing beg to be heard.

i really don't notice the machine noise too much. Once I get in a game and i'm always playing with sound ON I never hear it or listen for it.

my ps2 reading CDR's is much louder (laser noise/seeking)

Very tempted to grab an Elite but I think I'll wait for the new chip. Hopefully it'll have HDMI and be sold in black.

Got my Elite yesterday at the Best Buy in Kildeer, IL. It's fantastic. Had movie comparison night last night where we watched parts of Fletch and Oceans 11 in my below average DVD Player, then watched the entire movie through the Elite. What an amazing difference. And for now, I'm only using the component outs with digital audio.

As far as GHII, my wife and I went to BB, CC, EB Games, Target and Wal-Mart and found none. Hopefully this will change soon as Red Octane is showing them in stock again.

Question: My Sony 60" WEGA only has a DVI in, can I just buy an HDMI to DVI cable to use with my Elite.

On a side note, I absolutely love my 360 elite.

Only problem I am having is hooking it up to my MCE pc..... every time I try to run the program on my computer, it complains about ports not being open and to disable firewalls etc. I have Norton Internet Security Suite.. I tried just completely disabling the firewall.. no luck, tried following their official instructions on which programs in the ehome directory to give access to, and still didn't work. I'm not sure what I need to do.

It could have something to do with my router needing port forwarding configured on it.. I don't know. I just got really pissed off after fiddling with it for an hour and a half.

Yeah, you may need to configure port forwarding in your router. Check the manual for information on how to do that.

If it were GameCube loud that'd be ok. It made marginal noise. Behind glass in an AV rack (with lots o venting on all sides) it's not that bad. Almost never hear it except in quiet parts there is sometimes an oscillation which can be heard. I was trying to get some Dead Rising achievements and could hear it when the lights went out and there isn't that wonderful muzak playing. Wasn't there reports of Dead Rising being too much for launch systems to handle? They got too hot and shut down? This would have been on arstechnica.

I got one today at the Kmart in Chehalis, WA. Not hooking up until Thursday when all my new Monoprice cables arrive for redoing my whole system. Yes, the wait is killing me!

Target had one more. This one is half as loud and no oscillation. :D

Received mine from GameStop.com today. Unfortunately, the bezel was cracked near the USB door, and the door was jammed in. Fortunately, GameStop is exchanging it. But, it will be a couple more days until I get a chance to play it. :(

Bought one last night. Just sent in for my data migration cable...bit of a hassle there, should have included one in the box I say.

I agree. It would have been much easier...

New Elite owner here, nabbed mine at a local Target yesterday. Both my wife and eldest son agree that it looks "Fergelicious!" Or rad, dope, the bizzomb or whatever superlative that you would like to use to describe how this looks aesthetically.

This about sums it up for me...


Matches the other A/V Gear is a big plus cosmetically.
HDMI - visible improvement over component and VGA on Vizio 60" PDP. Ultimately, more detail, better color and lighting on NBA 2K7 the major game I play.
No need for the large HD but it's "Fergilicious" did I mention that earlier? :D

I dont think until the new live update gets released, hopefully they are addressing this.

Also on another note my buddy picked up an Elite and it is definitely quieter than my Core. The picture looks great he has a 46in aquos without banding and we spun up crackdown and its definitely a lot cripser. Afterwards threw in Batman Begins to test upscaling to 1080p and I gotta say it looks pretty damn good. He is definitely happy with his purchase. Got it from target and 3yr warranty for 30 bucks.

I finally took the plunge and opened my Elite this morning. I decided not to wait for the so-called 65nm models. I rather take my chances now and enjoy it. Since this is my first next-gen console, I have to say I'm extremely pleased with my purchase. Everyone keeps talking about how loud the drive can really get. Since I have nothing to compare it to, IMO, its pretty quiet for me. Don't get me wrong...I can still hear the drive working but not enough for it to drive me crazy. I was playing Rainbow Six: Vegas for about 3 hours straight and so far no problems at all ***knock on wood***. I guess I'm just gonna have to play the heck out of it and hope for the best that nothing happens.

HDMI hooked up to a Philips 37" 720p LCD.

Btw...does anyone think that buying an HD-DVD add-on is worth it since I only can get up to 720p/1080i?? Will HD-DVDs make a difference in PQ?
