Hey everyone been watching some episodes of season 3 and as usual have gotten into it all over again. Anyway I was considering buying Season 1, 2 In SD since they are avalibile now. After thinking though I remember that this show runs in HD on ABC so a HD edition would come at some point. Now I know no information is currently out but what do you guys speculate for a possible time frame for such a high profile release. The problem for me is I know it looks breathtaking in HD but buying it now and then hearing a release soon would absolultey kill me. :D

If it is released, it would be Blu Ray exclusive. it's distributed by Buena Vista Home Entertainment, which is currently BD only.

I haven't bought the SD versions because they might be released in BR.

The day they are released is the day I buy them. Simple as that. ;)

I don't know about a timeframe, but if they do come out, they could potentially look better than on the ABC-HD broadcasts, since those are 720p and I believe this show is shot on film (so could be 1080p on disc).

I'm also starting to really get excited about the show again. I loved season 1, enjoyed season 2, and up until recently I wasn't too crazy about season 3. However, that has all changed with the last 4-5 episodes being top notch Lost. I hope this is released on BD sooner rather than later.

According to the executive producers on their podcast, Lost was done on film for seasons one and two, and three was recorded on digital HD cameras.

Glad I'm getting a PS3 this summer, totally forgot Buena Vista is behind them. Has anyone tuned in to all their podcasts as I'm sure that they would have gone into more detail at least once. I've never seen them in HD, so the jump for cable SD to BD would be monumental. Hope they give us some hints soon otherwise I'll break down and wait for the eventual double dip.

If it is released in HD, it will almost certainly be on BD:

Thanks. Hadn't heard that (if true). Suspect, if it's video taped, it's likely done at 1080/24PsF (segmented frame), like most other taped drama shows. If they use standard older HDCAMs that means resolution limiting at 1440h, with upconversion to 1920X1080/24PsF, then downscaling to 1280X720p for ABC delivery. As with telecined 1080/24p master tapes from film, the downconversion boosts the limiting and effective resolutions (http://archive2.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=5667245&&#post5667245) of 720/60p (with pulldown for 24p) much closer to the format resolution. (If taped with newer HDCAM-SRs, there's no 1440h resolution limiting, and the extra detail might be carried over to HD discs.) Then again, if camera filters are used for most scenes, as with most filmed/taped dramas, a lot of potential details won't even reach the tape/film/hard drives. -- John
