View Full Version : Comcast HD On-Demand not in HD

I have searched everywhere for an answer, and I can't seem to find one.

I have two 3416's hooked up via component cables to two HD sets (one 720p and one 1080i). HD content plays perfectly, with the exception of HD On-Demand.

I select channel 1 (On Demand), select "HD On-Demand", and select either a free movie or an Encore movie form the list. When the movie starts playing, it is letterboxed on the top, bottom, and both sides, and the input on the TV is showing 480i (just like all other On Demand content).

I assume that this is not supposed to happen. I would expect the channel to switch to HD mode (1080i or 720p) automatically. I have noticed other people having the same problem. I tried contacting Comcast and even had a tech out, but they were clueless on how to solve this issue.

There must be someone out there that watches HD On-Demand content (preferrably the free content) and has it working. However, there do appear to be others like me that can't get out of 480i mode.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm at work so I'm going by memory here, but I think the procedure I used was turning my 3416 on then immediately pressing "menu". This put me in the settings menu for the 3416. I set all HD programming to 1080i and SD programming to 480p. Then I went into HD on Demand and got a beautiful HD picture. Not sure if this will work for you, but it did for me... Good luck...

Unfortunately, I am pretty sure that is how I have at least one of my DVRs set up. I will double check when I get home.

I finally found the solution. The 4:3 override needs to be "off" for it to work. I had one on 480i and one on 480p.

Snowcat,

When you do that, your SD reception doesn't go down the pooper? My SD reception actually comes in relatively well when I have 4:3 override set at 480i. Any other setting, and it gets very grainy or pixelated looking. That setting doesn't seem to affect the HD channels. And as far as I can see, there's absolutely no difference in the way the HD On Demand channels come in... just fools the TV into thinking it's receiving a higher resolution signal. They still have all the flaws and low resolution of SD on my tv.

Let us know if you have any more info. Thanks!

Rick

Don't know about snowcat, but I changed my 4:3 override between "off" and 480p and saw no difference in SD picture quality. My equipment: I have a HANNspree XV 37 LCD, and I like my SD picture stretched rather than bars left and right. The quality of the SD pic is as good as I've seen on most any 37" LCD. Of course, the quality of SD upconversion varies from TV to TV, so these settings might not work as well for you...

The SD quality seems a little worse, but it's hard to tell a big difference. I probably will keep the override to 480i or 480p unless I want HD on demand.
