View Full Version : Cropped D-Theater titles (Stir of Echoes)?

I was going through my tapes today and noticed that my copy of STIR OF ECHOES has a box on the back of the cover insert stating"FULLSCREEN EDITION: FORMATTED FROM THE ORIGINAL VERSION TO FIT YOUR SCREEN. ENHANCED FOR 16:9 TELEVISION." I never noticed this before. It's one of Artisan's last releases on the format, and two others I checked (THE LIMEY, THE NINTH GATE) have similar boxes but both state that they are "WIDESCREEN EDITION."

Were there multiple versions of STIR OF ECHOES on D-Theater? If anyone has this title and can check theirs, I'm wondering if there were actually two versions (FULL and WIDE) and I managed to somehow receive a FULL version. I had thought that all of the releases on this format were OAR.

The DVD is labeled the same way, that was Artisan's weird way of identifying 16:9 DVDs of 1.85:1 films. I guess technically their terminology is correct, since the theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1 is "opened up" ever so slightly top-and-bottom to conform to the HD 16:9 (1.78:1) aspect ratio. Basically you're getting a few extra scanning lines top and bottom, nothing is cropped, and it's not enough to "alter" the compositions in any meaningful way.
