Hi everyone. I've been reading this forum for a few weeks now and feel like I have a good grasp on hd technology. Now it's time to plunk down some cash and bring one of these babies home.

Unfortunately I only have 1k to spend, which is somewhat below the price range most discussions on this forum circle around.

Any and all suggestions welcome. 37" Screen minimum. LCD or Plasma. If it's not a brand name, must have an excellent reputation among buyers, since it's going to be a gift. Thanks!

Not sure what "excellent rep" would mean to you, but the Vizio VX37L is a pretty nice set IMO.

I am also in the same cituation. I am looking for a flat panel for around $1000 mainly for TV (both SD and HD) and DVDs, and I have found these:

Vizio LX37
Vizio VP42
Samsung S4041N

I like the price of the first two a lot, but I have only seen the LX32 up close, and it did look amazing! It has a contrast of 1600:1 though, and the LX37 has 1000:1. This may be an issue.
I also haven't seen the S4041 either. I have seen the 3251 (4000:1) and the 3253 (7000:1) (in the same store with the Vizio) and the 3251 looked very grainy compared to the Vizio and the 3253 (with the only difference with the 3271 being the contrast ratio!).

Any other suggestions or opinions?

I can vouch for the VX37L. It's a budget TV for sure, but it has a beautiful picture. I'm only basing this on OTA signal, but I've been amazed at the PQ of this set. No issues with mine so far.

Thank you for your reply.
I have seen the Westinghouse in BB and the colours looked washed out, it was really bad.
The Samsung 4051 costs at least $1150 and I have heard funny comments on it in here.
I really like the Panasonic plasmas (I think I am not the only one!), but the TH42PD60U is EDTV and not HDTV (I forgot to mention that I am looking for 1024x768 and up).
The 9UK one is a pro line, and the stand my itself is $200!! Then I need a sound system as well (I plan to get one anyways, but not right away, unless it's less than <$150).
The Pioneer is too expensive...wait...I found somethign online...But it also has no speakers.
The Samsung plasma is $100 more expensive than my budget and the Sharp LC37D62U 37 is also $100 more. The Sharp AQUOS you have listed is in my budget though.
HMMM....I will look into all of these more (only the HDTV) and will come back when I narrow down to 2-3.

Why don't you check out BB's "outlet" on Ebay? They have factory sealed units that fall within the limit of your budget.
