"This is a glorious, colorful image, and despite the lack of a single explosion or car chase, still makes for great demo material. The source is flawless, blacks are rock solid, and contrast is excellent. The image has sensational depth and clarity, with the photo-real, three-dimensional quality that we all hope for when we pop in a new HD DVD release. The transfer is also as sharp as a tack, with even the darkest sections of the image boasting excellent shadow detail."
Tim Glover 04-25-07, 01:54 AM Just saw that too. Terrific news. Hopefully mine will ship from amazon on Monday.
Really looking forward to this. :)
AaronSCH 04-25-07, 03:33 AM I really wanted to like this film. But for me, it was incredibly flat. Grease and Chicago are the best contemporary musicals and lend themselves to repeated viewings. Maybe I will like Dreamgirls the second time around on high def.
HDphile22 04-25-07, 07:28 AM R&B is my favorite music Genre, and hell I like Beyonce A lot!
For me, this is a No-Brainer, Must Buy
I am still debating to get it in Local B&M or Amazon.

That's disappointing to hear. I was looking forward to seeing Dreamgirls. It's in my Netflix queue. I hope it's good. I'm thrilled to hear the transfer was top notch. I liked Chicago as well and Grease, of course, is a classic.
MidnightWatcher 04-25-07, 09:37 AM The HD DVD version comes with a Dolby Digital Plus 1.5mbps sound track. Though TrueHD would have been better, I'm glad Paramount didn't decide to skimp out too much and give it a plain old Dolby Digital 640kbps track like the blue boys get.
MarcoAD 04-25-07, 09:37 AM This movie was fantastic! THis plus what looks like a stellar review, I can't wait. Now if we could just get Idlewild on HD-DVD, I would be set.
dbburns 04-25-07, 12:22 PM I'm glad it has incredible PQ as well. When I saw it in the theater, it was a blurry mess, and I feared that's just the way it looked. Very glad to hear otherwise. That's why I hate going to the theater anymore.
HDphile22 04-29-07, 08:17 AM Bump!
The HD DVD version comes with a Dolby Digital Plus 1.5mbps sound track. Though TrueHD would have been better, I'm glad Paramount didn't decide to skimp out too much and give it a plain old Dolby Digital 640kbps track like the blue boys get.I did not know this. Why would BD get a lesser Audio? I know Happy Feet was the same way...that's why I bought the HD DVD version over BD.
HDphile22 04-29-07, 04:02 PM Anyone gonna buy this at local B&M Tuesday?
Circuit City has a Free Music Sampler AND Best Buy have a $30 Valued Music Card, but I am not sure those are attached with DVD versions or can I get those with the HD DVD version. I try to get it at Best Buy to get that $30 Music download card, unless it's all Bundled with the regular DVD disc
Broccoli 04-29-07, 04:06 PM Dreamgirls was ok but nowhere as good as they hyped it. But the disc in general seems to be a pretty good release.

It is interesting to see the audio comparison between the two formats. Blu-Ray has more movies with lossless audio, but when neither version has lossless HD DVD usually gets the better end with DD+ 1.5 mbps or DD+ 640 kbps compared to Blu-Rays standard DD 640 kbps.
shadowrage 04-30-07, 01:46 AM DD+ 1.5
Now I have a lot more movies on HD DVD than BD. Between Warner and the audio thing I may have to just pick a side.
High_Def DVD 04-30-07, 08:38 AM So, if i got this right.
Picture quality is a 5, and Sound quality is a...5?
Were did this "5" for sound come from, or did i misunderstood something, what have i missed?
Tim Glover 04-30-07, 01:40 PM My copy shipped today from amazon! :)

But they both got a 4 out of 5 in audio...The HD DVD version should have received a 4 1/2..Oh wells..
Travisimo 04-30-07, 02:10 PM My copy shipped today from amazon! :)
Mine says "Shipping Soon" so I fully expect that it will ship today and arrive on Wednesday! I'm very much looking forward to this release, especially when the HD supplements.
Mark Zimmer 04-30-07, 10:37 PM It should be noted that this set gives us a rare opportunity to compare apples and apples with different codecs. The feature on disc 1 is encoded with VC-1. The extras on disc 2, which include copious clips from the movie, are at least partly encoded with AVC. I don't have a system that would allow a proper A/B betwen the own disc (for starters I only have one HD DVD player) but here's an opportunity for someone obsessive to do a direct comparison of the results between the two codecs.
This is one stellar transfer. While I would have preferred a TrueHD soundtrack, the DD+ soundtrack really rocks. Jennifer Hudson really deserved her Oscar. A great performance. I picked up a copy today at BB. They had alot on hand.
eapleitez 05-01-07, 02:34 PM Would I enjoy this movie if I don't listen to the Supremes or other music of that type?
tkbryant 05-01-07, 03:08 PM Wow this is an absolutely stellar debut for Dreamworks first hi-def title!! This is a gorgeous looking title with lots of deep bold colors with tons of glitz & glam that make for fantastic eye candy!! The DD+ soundtrack is pretty righteous in it's own right as well. It's great owning both formats as you can always opt for the titles with the superior soundtracks. I do agree with HD Digests review in that this would have been an absolutely killer sounding title with a true uncompressed track such as PCM or TrueHD. Alas though as the DD+ delivers pretty adequately.
Plus all the extras and this adds up to a great overall package! Hopefully Dreamworks next title, Flags of Our Fathers gets the same "supreme" treatment! :D
