Saw this little item on IGN. Supposedly HD DVD is only 2,000 disc sales behind Blu-Ray's 1M mark. It would definitely be nice to get some hard evidence to confirm some of these numbers. An interesting tid-bit:

According to their figures, HD-DVD movie sales lag only 2,000 units behind Blu-ray with 998,059 units sold. The firm points out that pre-orders of Planet Earth and The Matrix Trilogy will propel HD-DVD over the million-mark quite shortly. Representatives also stated that hardware sales have continued with strength in April, maintaining a 4 to 1 margin over Blu-ray.

Blu-ray sales are over 1.2 million now, and that 1.2 million was achieved in a shorter period of time.

OTOH, for Q1 had very few HD DVD releases, so there wasn't a big incentive for HD DVD owners to buy. Furthermore, it took something north of 3 million PS3s to achieve that 1.2 million discs sold.

So They only just after tuesday hit 1 million. Now they already at 200,000 more considering that Bond sold 50,000 and that was 3x more than any other movie on either format sold.

It all depends on sales and how these are organized. BD has sold about 1 million discs (possibly including Ricky Bobby), and HD-DVD is probably close behind considering the 4 month head start. But Bond for example has about 50,000 unsold discs, that number alone is 2x more then 90% of the movie had produced (average is between 20,000 and 25,000.)

HD DVD will probably be at the 1 million movies sold by the end of the week, if not already. :)

And SOLD, not shipped. They shipped 1.5 million back in November already.

Well being ahead in hardware is more important than software. right? More players, so more software buyers, right? We just need a healthy dose of HD-DVD releases, which have been scarce lately! I want to see Q2 sales.

HD DVD have sold many more standalone dedicated movie players. The PS3 effect will see diminishing returns since most of those who purchased it as their primary Blu-ray player have likely already done so by now.
