View Full Version : HD DVD PR firm: 0.999mil HD DVD movies sold
xboxboi 04-25-07, 09:36 PM hmm hopefully, this is the correct thread.
apparently, sicken by BDA's press release of achieving 1mil Blu-ray Disk sales (with <>2mil BD players around), HD DVD's PR firm Webersh & Wick contacted IGN directly and told them that HD DVD movie sales lag only 2,000 units behind Blu-ray with 998,059 units sold (HD DVD promo group has recently announced that they sold 100,000 standalone HD DVD players)
Webersh & Wick also said that if taking into consideration of the preorders for Planet Earth and Matrix, the figure would be well over 1mil very shortly
According to their figures, HD-DVD movie sales lag only 2,000 units behind Blu-ray with 998,059 units sold. The firm points out that pre-orders of Planet Earth and The Matrix Trilogy will propel HD-DVD over the million-mark quite shortly.
Despite being the sole CE manufacturer of single format HD DVD player, Toshiba continues to beat the BD combined sales from MULITPLE BD CEs e.g. Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, and Samsung. Webersh & Wick pointed out that the HD DVD hardware sales continue is INCREDIBLE 4:1 margin lead
Representatives also stated that hardware sales have continued with strength in April, maintaining a 4 to 1 margin over Blu-ray.

What's closed? The Sales sticky thread? This one? (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=796036)
HPforMe 04-25-07, 10:57 PM The hyperbole is terrible. Subscribe to the Google hd dvd/blu ray news thread and you will see very poor reporting as if blu ray has blown HD DVD away and is winning the "war." The difference is no minute as to be laughable.
highdefsw 04-26-07, 10:15 AM Sorry, the thread in the HDTV Software Media Discussion area is closed.
FlikkyDVD 04-26-07, 10:21 AM With the promised drop in prices this year and the strong sales in both camps, it seems this might not end for several years.
My only worry now is that it might end for both formats; being that HD & BD sales combined last year accounted for less than 1% of overall home video purchases. This needs to move into the mainstream if either one wants to make any money on it.
AaronSCH 04-26-07, 10:33 AM Man, I am so tired of people decrying the fact that HD DVD and Blu-ray sales only accounted for 1% of overall home video purchases last year. How does this imply doom for both high definition formats? Did anyone seriously think that swarms of people were gonna run out and immediately make a purchase? For cryin' out loud do some homework. It took DVD a few years to truly pick up steam. Both Blu-ray and HD DVD have barely been available a full year. These ridiculous statements employ no thought process. In my personal experience, everyone that has witnessed the images produced by both HD DVD and Blu-ray have either already bought into a high definition format or plan to do so in the near future. One or both of these formats will be around a very long time and will live harmoniously with the standard DVD. Sure, downloading is also in the future but people love collecting and pre-packaged media is gonna live long after most of us have turned to dust.

Here is some more perspective. It wasn't until 2006 that DVD player penetration surpassed VCR player penetration.
Remember this is from 2006:
December 19, 2006 -- NEW YORK - Nielsen Media Research released findings today from its 3rd Quarter Home Technology Report which show that more U.S. households now own DVD players (81.2% of all households) than VCRs (79.2% of households).
...
In 1999 when Nielsen first started tracking DVD ownership in its Home Tech Report, DVD penetration was only 6.7% and was dwarfed by VCR ownership at 88.6%.
...
Nielsen's latest report also found that DVD households now rent DVDs about twice per month, compared to VCR homes renting VHS tapes only about once per month. The frequency with which households rent video tapes has leveled off during the past six months.
Glad to see that the bar for clobbering an opponent is merely 2000 movies. :D
With more than 2Million players out there one would expect the BDA to have sold something more than 5 Million movies a player, instead of only 1 Million movies to Millions of PS3s. ;)

According the article... Blu-ray is selling at 4x the attach rate of HD-DVD players....
If they negate to use the PS3 for hardware sales statistics, I don't see how it's fitting to include them in software sales statistics...
Just a general observation....

Here, here. Agree completely. In fact, as has been pointed out the pace high def formats are selling (software and hardware) is roughly the same pace dvd was selling at. Projected growth is significant over the next five years.
