Hi everyone,

Was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction with these remotes? I have 3 remotes now and would like to simplify my setup some. Any purchases in the future ( HD DVD or Blue Ray etc. ) would probably replace an existing component, so would still have 3 remotes. I may in the future add a game console, not sure yet.

Here is what I have:
Samsung hp-t4254 Plasma
Sony DDW-900 Surround
Samsung Upconvert DVD/VCR combo

Would one of these remotes handle these ok?

Thanks

Unless you have a DVR, which the 6131N has a couple of specific buttons for, I would get the URC-8820. It has a lot more codes built in and has learning capability. I think both are upgradable (not sure about URC-6131N, but definitely URC-8820), but you would have to send in the remote to One for All.

The great thing about the 8820 (and also 6131N, after a hardware modification) is that you can buy or build a cable that will make it PC programmable. This will allow you to add upgrades for devices that the remote does not have built in code for without having to send the remote to OfA. You can also move around key programming to your preferences (that can be done just with the remote, but more difficult), and backup all the programming on the computer. Macro programming will also be easier and you can add macros to device keys, so that for example, you can switch the TV input selection when you change the device mode on the remote. You can read about it starting here at the JP1 site (http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1009), and also read through some of the forum topics.

For example, you PROBABLY won't have any difficulties with the Samsung TV and DVD/VCR combo (not positive, since I don't have those devices), but you might have some difficult getting all the function for the Sony HTS with a stock 8820 remote. However, there is an upgrade file (http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload.php?action=file&file_id=4051) in the JP1 site for DDW-700 which might be a close enough match to work.

If you do decide to get the cable, make sure you buy or build JP1.2 cable, not a JP1 cable (that's for the older models of One for All remotes, and actually URC-6131N uses JP1 cable).

Thanks for the advice. I was leaning to the 8820 and will read the JP1 site that you mentioned.

I'll just say that I have the 10820 (very similar to 8820), and I'm liking it quite a bit. I don't have a JP1.2 cable for it yet, but even without it, you can enter discrete codes, and put macros on the device keys. Couple that with the learning ability, I've gotten pretty much every command I actually use from the old remotes mapped to the 10820.
