Greetings,

I am currently in the market for a 46 inch LCD TV. I have been out of the market for about 3 years. As such, yesterday I started reading the forum for up to date information on the industry. I was always thinking of getting the Sharp LC46D62U however after reading and seeing all the problems people have with them I got discouraged as I do not want to go on a returning spree again, don’t have the time for it.

2-3 years a go I had a Panasonic LCD TV 26 inch. One annoying thing about it was the Dynamic Contrast. Even though it was off from the user menu, during dark scenes it still made the screen lighter, this distorted colors and sometimes caused flickering. That was very annoying. Does the Sharp LC46D62U have this?

If the Sharp LC46D62U has too severe banding and I have seem some screen issues such as “blotches” and other abnormalities / damage, what else would be a good choice ?

Sony ?
LG ?

Something in the same price range as the Sharp. Do all LCD’s have noticeable banding ? Also are XBR’s worth the extra money ?

Thank you for your time.

Greetings,

I went to a few local retailers and looked at the Sharp LC46D62U. I was talking to a sales person, to my left there was a LC46D62U and a LC46D82U. The banding was so severe on the 62U that is was astonishing, I was not even looking at the TV, it was an HD transmission showing a hokey game. The 62U had awful banding where the 82U did not. The banding was only in the middle of the screen. It was very annoying. It looked like RP burn in. I went to a few BB’s and looked at other Sharp TV’s same model; some had banding some did not, none as severe as the first one I saw. To me is defiantly a DEFECT / Quality control problem and is unacceptable, after all, this is not a 900$ TV. Also keep in mind LCD panels have been made for more then 25 Years. I looked at some Sony TV’s and did not notice any banding. Any suggestions?

How bad are the Sony equivalents ?

I have a Mitsubishi LT-46231 and I love it....no clouds...no bands....just a trouble free beautiful set...go to "LCD Flat panel displays" in this forum... then to "official Mitsubishi LT-46321" and you will see why we all love our set....

I first purchased an LG with the built in DVR but the contrasting and lack of back light made the darks scenes hard to watch...the same problem you spoke about...I gave it a week and I returned the set and spent considerably more money for the 46321 and I have never been happier...the blacks so rich...the colors deep and true....the LT-46131 the sister to my set is also lovely...it is cheaper and lacks Perfect Tint feature but it is also 46 inches and a great set....

The only defect in this set is a slight cricket sound that can be fixed easily....I have not experienced that at all....it seems to be a minor problem....not like the horrendous clouds of the over priced Sony and the banding in the Sharp and Samsung...right out of the box I loved it...the store demo did not do this set justice...I saw it side by side with a Sony...I liked this one better...especially when I saw the clouds on the Sony....

Also to be fair if you are trying to save money Vizio has great products...they lack some things but the picture quality is amazing for an inexpensive set...it has PIP which I have and 2 HDMI connections which I also have...

Hope I helped....this is a big decision ...you are spending what used to be enough for a great used car....you don't want to make a mistake....one last thing...if you are still deciding go to Best Buy ....WalMart...Costco...Circuit City....they have great return policies which will take the pressure off....

good luck...

Any particular reason your not considering plasma?

Greetings,

I have been traumatized by burn-in. It rendered my past 3K Sony useless only in 3 years, and I did not even watch it to much. It was not severe but noticeable. As a result I have out factored plasma.

That's a shame you feel that way, because it's much harder to burn in a plasma now than it was 3+ years ago. If you read the plasma threads here, it's very rarely reported. I've never even had the slightest image retention on my Pioneer in the month and a half I've had it so far.

As far as LCD's, the Mitsubishi mentioned is nice, and you also might wanna check out the JVC's, too. I know that most people here who have one are pretty satisfied with the newer ones. Everytime I see the 1080p, 46" model in Fry's Electronics when I go there, it just leaves me agape. The JVC's are supposed to be one of the best at displaying SD content, too.

Plasma screens have actually come along way in 3 years. This years crop of plasma screens is proving to be exceptional.

On that note, stay away from Sharps, they all still have random "banding" issues. Samsung,Sony,Westinghouse and LG are good brands to do research on. The Westinghouse 47w1 is a real sleeper 1080p 47" at $1800. The new LG's also should be considered, they may currently have the best looking LCD's currently. They caught my eye on a number of occasions now.

Greetings,

Thank you for your replies.

I would like to see the new LG models as well, however no store has any on display, yet, where I live. They say withing a month they will.

I will take a look at plasma again. I only watch HD stuff such as HBO or up-converted movies. Color wise plasma looks very good.

Pitty Sharp tv's have the problems mentioned. I was hoping LCD TV buying process is much simpler as there really is nothing in the TV other then the pannel. Remids me of the CRT buying days where I had to check for so many things before buying.
