I've got a Dual format LG and it does not play some HD DVD titles purchased in europe. I have not found (out of 2) that it plays titles from Universal. It does play Casino Royale, but this is not from universal. The title that I have tried in a Toshiba, Tokyo Drift, does play in Toshiba XA2 just fine. The US version of Tokyo drift plays ok in the LG.

Is there a reason that it shouldn't play some HD DVDs, and will it be just HD DVDs from europe or could there be US titles as well that don't play?

My understanding is that HD DVD does not have region coding. Certainly none of the discs I purchased indicate that there is any kind of region coding.

The LG player you have does not fully support HD DVD - it doesn't support the HDi interactivity layer which is used extensively by many titles. Therefore, you may experience playback difficulties with this unit - this is why the HD DVD group forced LG to take the HD DVD logo off the unit.

The upcoming Samsung BD-UP5000 on the other hand offers true HD DVD playback, not crippled playback like LG's first combo player.

Some of the Studio Canal releases use a lot of HDi in even the basic menus.

The LG cannot do HDi, which is why they are not allowed to put the HD DVD logo on it, and why they are bringing out a new Hybrid player.

The Samsung UP5000 is fully HDi compliant.

I don't know the answer to you question. But, I can say that so far, I haven't had any issues with the LG playing the feature of any HD-DVD disc that I've tried.
