View Full Version : 1080p CRT?
Shroomie 04-26-07, 08:03 PM I have an Insignia 30" CRT TV that I bought two years ago from Best Buy on Black Friday. Up until now, I've always ran both my Xbox 360 and my HD OTA tuner on 720p because of some problems when using 1080i.
Well the other night I was playing with the options on my 360, and I accidentally set it to 1080p. I figured it would just change back after a minute or so without me telling it to keep that res. Then, to my surprise, it recognized the signal as 1080p and displayed it properly.
Basically, my question is am I actually getting 1080p from a cheap two-year old CRT, or is it just recognizing the 1080p signal and then downgrading it to something that it can display?

UWisconsin97 04-27-07, 12:33 AM Not sure, I sold my 360 about 2 months ago, and patiently waiting for the Elite to come out..
I am pretty sure it's 1080i, because to my knowledge, the 360 doesn't upconvert to 1080p via component; but I may be wrong.
Mathesar 04-27-07, 01:08 AM If its any help I tried selecting 1080p on my 360 tonight and it just goes to a black screen for about 10 seconds then returns to my usual 720p setting, im using a Sony XBR960 hdtv / component cables.

Yes, it will.

Yes it will, what?
Why would you try 1080p if your CRT isn't 1080p? That's like putting diesel into a gasoline engine.. it's just not going to work.. ;) like the above posters have already mentioned..

The 360 will scale to 1080p over component is what I meant. But I never said I do that. My HDTV doesn't support 1080p so I couldn't if I wanted to. Right now there isn't a whole lot of HDTVs that will accept 1080p over component but the list is growing and probably will become a standard feature before long.

That's what I figured.. and I didn't direct the second comment to you or anyone else.. just adding it out there.. :)
Or another perspective...
If the "encoded" material is 1080p, and the TV accepts 1080p, but the native resolution of the TV is only 1080i, it may look better interlaced by the TV.
As compared to...
Encoded 1080p material and interlaced in the 360 to 1080i and fed to the TV at 1080i.
Hypothetically... the TV could do a "better" job in the conversion.

I was trying to switch to 1080i and hit the down button an extra time. The thing is, though, that it actually worked. The picture was displayed correctly and the TV said "1080P-60" when I hit the button to see what resolution it was on.

My friend just brought over his 360 premium, and I tried setting it to 1080p, and got a black screen, and I'll give it another try or two when we're done playing MLB 2k7 on this beautiful TV.

What TV do you have? If it's a Sony CRT 1080p isn't going to work because none of those support 1080p as far as I know ( Not even over HDMI. They don't support it at all. ).

Sony XBR970.. I was just curious, because in the manual, it shows a picture of some ducks, in 16:9 in 1080p.. so I gave it a whirl and didn't get 1080p. Oh well..
chrisherbert 04-28-07, 02:20 AM None of these TVs even scan to 720p. They certainly aren't showing 1080p, even if they accept and convert the signal.

Yeah, the resolution of the XBR970 is 853 X 1080 interlaced. You aren't getting quite as sharp a picture as a 720p flat-panel and certainly not as much so as a 1080p flat-panel. But what you are getting is virtually infinite contrast, more reallistic color reproduction, and lightning fast response times. This TV will display 480i with line-doubling ( Some refer to that as 960i. ), 480p, and 1080i. 720p signals are scaled to 1080i. 1080p signals aren't excepted at all. Sure, 853 X 1080 might seem pretty low for a HDTV, especially since it is interlaced to boot, but the contrast abilities makes up for it. Despite the lower resolution figures many believe this set looks better than quite a few of the higher res. flat-panels out there. The poor contrast abilities of flat-panels compromises their resolution capabilities quite a bit.
MichaelHDDVD 04-28-07, 01:56 PM The 360 can display 1080p via component if the HDTV accepts a 1080p signal over component.
The 360 "displays" nothing. Perhaps you meant to say that the 360 is capable out outputting 1080p over component. Which was stated in post #5 and clarified in post #7. ;)

ok, the 360 can output 1080p natively over Y Pb Pr cables
need more specifics?
