I am looking for a hard drive based player for my car. I like the tvix 4100 and the mvix line which has a car power supply. I dont want to mess up the machine with all of the power surges during cranking up the car. I only want to watch ifo dvds with full menu suipport.

You can check out TViX C3000U at TViX USA website. It is specifically designed for car use and comes with 12v power supply, remote eye extension cable, 2nd remote control, and a carrying case.

Since you do not need networking or DVI connection in the car, C3000U will do everything that M4000P does except for WMV9 file playback.

i have been looking into moving an old lappy to my car and a din mounted screen.

i am not sure of the players but the place i search for these answers are over on mp3car.com. they have a very active forum, but be advised, they dont appear as friendly to noob (a group i am a proud member of!) as avs is!
