View Full Version : Host is coming to HD DVD, Yeah!!!
xradman 04-27-07, 10:27 AM According to HDD, Host is coming to HD DVD from Magnolia this July 24. I am so glad to see first of hopefully many more Korean movies coming out on HD DVD (Japan only releases with no subtitles don't count).

Great, good to hear that. I wanted to see that movie, but it never made it to wide release. It was playing at a cinema about 45 miles from me so I never got around to seeing it....
Fettastic 04-27-07, 10:40 AM I haven't heard anything about this movie. What's it about?
Korea isn't exactly known for making quality films so I'm a bit skeptical. I saw that Godzilla clone they did a few years back and that was ok I guess for what it was.

Huh?
Actually, Korea has delivered some great movies in the past years. Korea is one of the most interesting and blooming industries in the film business I think. Only problem is that most of these films stay undiscovered and only the people that really care about asian cinema make the effort to find these flicks. Some of the greatest films are only avialabe in Asia (many of them with englisch subs though).
Just because you don't hear from most of them in the US (or any other place outside of Asia for that matter) doesnt mean that they aren't making quality films.
Problem is that most people just don't really care because way too many people are happy with their basic formularic big buget crap.
My opinion is that asian films have surpassed american films already... especially Hollywood with their remakes of other films, videogames or theme parks or god knows what...or the 1000th sequel or re-telling of the same ****. Nooo thanks.
but thats just my opinion ;)

Fett,
Do yourself a favor and watch Oldboy, A Bittersweet Life, Lady Vengeance, and 3-Iron. With the exception of A Bittersweet Life, they are all available on Region 1 SD DVD release with English subtitles. If after watching all 4 films, you still think Korean films are poor, I will buy you a single US HD DVD or Blu-ray disc of your choice (not a boxset :) ).

Already has a thread.
xradman 04-27-07, 11:38 AM Daaang... Sorry about that. I thought I did a search before starting this thread.

Good List.
I would also add A Tale of Two Sisters, My Sassy Girl, You are My Sunshine, and quite a few others too. I love many Korean films. As a rule, their production values are as good or better than the vast majority of stuff Hollywood cranks out, and they put out very high quality DVDs.
That said, The Host isn't quite up there with Korea's best. Its way overhyped IMO. Its not a bad movie, but I expected better. While I would double dip for most of the movies listed above, I probably won't for The Host. Perhaps I need to watch it again.
Just my 2 cents,
J

Oh dude you speak from ignorance. :)
South Korea is arguably making some of the best movies of any country in the world, and have been for the past decade or so.
As to this movie, I've had the dvd sitting in my collection for quite a while now, but after seeing the HD-DVD announcement, I kind of want to hold of, and let that be my first experience of the movie.
I got to see The Host, and actually I'm kind of disappointed. Being a fan of past Korean movies, this one is quite mediocre. It doesn't quite work as a social or political commentary, and is only about average at best as a monster/action movie. I'm not the kind of guy who cares a lot about special effects, but the CGI effects were not nearly as good as what we've got from Hollywood.
stevenjw 04-27-07, 01:03 PM Fett,
I have to concur that S.Korea has produced some great films. I concur with Oldboy as a must see/own film. The Host has great reviews at rotten tomatoes. It's one film that I've been waiting for and am very glad to see in finally given a release date.
bygdaddy 04-27-07, 05:12 PM Does anyone know if this might be a "combo" disc or not? Thx
