View Full Version : Format neutral guys... how do your sort your HD/BD's?
Weird question, I know. :)
For instance:
Do you guys put them in alphabetical order regardless of format... or HD DVD then Blu-Ray or vice versa?
mproper 04-27-07, 10:36 AM Well I'm not neutral (can't afford to jump into BD right now), but if I was, I'd just sort them by title. No sense in discriminating based on color. That would be so 1950's.
I'm totally racist against the HDM color ;)
Blu on the left, Red on the right.....
Just like Politics :D
xradman 04-27-07, 10:41 AM My HD DVD and Blu-ray discs are sorted alphabetically. Top three rows are watched discs, the bottom two are my to watch pile. 115 HD DVDs and 74 Blu-ray discs as of April 27, 2007.
Please excuse few Japanese DVDs on the bottom row. My high-def discs are invading into my other DVD shelves.
Blu-ray discs and HD DVDs living together...in harmony... :)

Grubert 04-27-07, 11:20 AM Kitano fan, huh, xradman? ;)
I have only two BDs (T2 from a DDD price mistake and Memento from the amazon sale) but I don't have a BD player yet! So I use them as dividers between the already watched and to watch HD DVDs.
I mix blu and red randomly - I love it when I need to browse to find a certain disc, it creates the illusion I have many :)
All my HD DVD's are sorted nicely, for blu-ray disks, I only rent.... So you're better off asking Blockbuster. ;)
Michael TLV 04-27-07, 11:26 AM Greetings
I keep my 100 HD and 60 ish BDs separate frome each other ... so as to not confuse others in the house that might want to watch one of the flicks.
The boxes like to be segregated like that ... so they don't fight with each other. :)
Regards

Yeah, but I think I only have several of his films. It just happens that couple of his film titles are near the top of the alphabets. I would like to get more, but I stopped buying SD DVDs when I started getting into high-def discs. I'll have to now wait until these films start getting high-def releases with English subs before continuing my collection.
theforce8686 04-27-07, 11:41 AM I sort my discs by studio. Ive always done it that way. I do the same for my DVDs. It looks cool on a collection of 900 SDs when you have 100-200 in a row of the same studio with the same logo. So I do the same with m BDs as well.
drj2000 04-27-07, 12:13 PM Alphabetical
UxiSXRD 04-27-07, 12:15 PM PS3 games far left, Blu-ray center, HDDVD right. I tend to organize the studios together, with my favorite / most watched / latest to the left.
Right now it's:
33333 BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB HHHHHHHHHHHH

Total separation alphabetically. Maybe when/if I get Samsung's combo player they will finally be joined to live in peace with each other. :)

Same here for me..

I do the same thing. I sort first by format, blu on left, red on right then by studio then alphabetically. I started doing this in 97 when I first started buying DVDs. I tried putting them all alphabetically regardless of studio or color, but my wife couldn't stand the way it looked. :)

I put them in separate areas. 1 area for NTSC SD DVD, another for PAL SD DVD, another for BD another for HD DVD.

Wow that really makes my collection of 20 movies look like nothing, I think you got all 20 of my movies in there!
I'm not a dual format owner, but I arrange my movies by by studio, then within each studio the movies are arranged alphabetically
Alphabetical order, regardless of format. It makes it much easier to go through. Although I keep my TV on DVD seperate from my movies.
That's alot of discs... puts my collection to shame! :)

I think it's more about quality of the movies than quantity. Good choices :D

LOL! :D
Mine are in alphabetical regardless of format.
WirelessGuru 04-27-07, 05:08 PM I sort mine by studio.
Robert George 04-27-07, 06:14 PM I sort mine by format, then by codec, then by bit rate, then by where I bought it...
Actually, alphabetical by title. Not by color of the box.
fulcizombie 04-27-07, 06:21 PM I sort mine by format only, red on the left blue on the right.
Dreessen 04-27-07, 06:25 PM BDs stacked with the PS3 games on the shelf below the PS3, HD-DVDs stacked beside the BDs at Target and Best Buy.
Mad Chemist 04-27-07, 09:48 PM A pile on the ground I've watched and another pile the need to be watched.
TrevorS 04-27-07, 11:18 PM LOL! :D
Mine are in alphabetical regardless of format.
Yah! It gets tough though when you include LD's and VHS tapes :)!
A pile on the ground I've watched and another pile the need to be watched.
Ouch! That reminds me of me :)!
oscar_in_fw 04-27-07, 11:40 PM DVDs are alphabetically sorted. Blu-Rays and HD-DVD are sorted together more or less randomly but I'm notoriously disorganized. i've been playing the HD movie game for less than a month (15 Blu-Ray, 6 HD-DVD).

I just leave them laying on the floor in a large pile.
Actually, I organize them by title.
studiotan 04-28-07, 12:55 AM I sort mine alphabetically by title with the HD and BR mixed together but separated from my DVDs.
Sisko197 04-28-07, 12:58 AM Once upon a time, I had them stacked together. Then one night, I woke up and found Casino Royale doing a double backflip down on top of Batman Begins while Black Hawk Down and Ultraviolet were thrashing Serenity between the opening and closing sides of Kingdom of Heaven.
After that, I had to separate them. They do not play nicely together. Not at all. Even now, in their separate racks, I can hear them growling at each other every now and then. And don't even get the Talladega Nights Twins going on Army of Darkness.
Because Ash may have his boomstick, but the Twins (Bubba the Uncut and Junior the PS3 Pack-in) have what Eleanor Roosevelt said America was all about: badass speed. ;)
statman 04-28-07, 03:40 AM In my opinion, segregation is the only viable option at this stage of the format war. The formats just don't mix well at this point, and I like to maintain a certain level of peace. I have 10 HD then 7 BD then 7 PS3 left-to-right on one shelf, alphabetical within each format. When movies are available in both HD and BD formats, I usually buy/rent the HD format. Currently renting 2 HD/BD's a month via Netflix.
Well as far as DVD and HDDVD I have all my DVDs then DVD boxsets next is all the HDDVDs all are alphapitized. When I go blu I think ill have HDDVD first then blu ray. As my HDDVD collection will have the higher amount. At least for ahwile..
Yah! It gets tough though when you include LD's and VHS tapes :)!
Ouch! That reminds me of me :)!
Indeed that would present a challenge. ;)
Being format agnostic and the boxes being so easily identifiable, I just organize them in alphabetical order.
I have three kids...I'm happy if they don't end up out in the pool...
vwbeetlvr 04-28-07, 10:14 PM I'm totally neutral, d-theater, hd-dvd, blu-ray

sycho316 04-29-07, 02:16 PM Here's my tiny collection:

PULSAR3002 04-29-07, 05:26 PM PS3 games far left, Blu-ray center, HDDVD right. I tend to organize the studios together, with my favorite / most watched / latest to the left.

33333 BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB HHHHHHHHHHHH
great minds think a like.
luigionlsd 05-01-07, 09:08 PM I have all of my slim-cased formats next to eachother, but it goes HD (A-Z), PS3 (A-Z), BD (A-Z). Looks kind of cool with the clear cases in the middle. Wii and 360 games are after them.
QWK SVT 05-03-07, 03:20 PM I only have 40 movies combined (not including SD-DVD), but they're mixed together, sorted alphabetically, but seperated from SD.
The red/blue doesn't bother me, and since the cases are the same size/shape, it's much easier... I know which player to use, so it's not like I'm going to be confused by it :p
deckerm 05-03-07, 04:58 PM I sort mine by genre, then by title. When I am in the mood for a movie, it made more sense to pick a title by genre rather then start at the letter A and go down the alphabet. Then again, with 1300 DVDs I had to do something more efficient. THe hi def formats are seperate right now but those will follow suite when there is enough to get confused by.
static14 05-05-07, 01:00 PM mine are all intermingled alphabetically
I used to seprate mu DVDs by actor but it became to hard when the collection grew. So everything is seprated by format then alphapatized.
So DVD, DVD shows, HDDVDs, HDDVD shows VHS then Laserdisc due to size they are on a seprate 13" by 3ft shelves.
