I have just bought the Mits HD1000U front projector, and when I can find one at the right price will be getting the Pioneer 1016 receiver.
My question is this.
Would a HD or blu ray ( I am thinking PS3 here only) dvd player do an equal or better job of upconverting sd discs as the Oppo 981?
thanks for any light shed

The PS3 doesn't upscale standard DVDs.

Thanks,
so thats out how about a Tosh HD player
The Toshiba HD-DVD players are excellent upscaling players (as good as or better than the Oppo), and thus are great options for those who want to get into a high def format but also have many SD DVDs. The PS3 doesn't upscale (which is not that big a deal since displays will upscale anyway), BUT it does a poor job on SD DVDs, having nothing to do with the lack of upscaling (the PS3 does not properly recognize film cadences). If you want a high def player that also performs well with SD DVDs, the PS3 would not be my top choice (although it is an excellent BD player).

Thanks. Sounds like this may be the way to go. Would the first gen tosh be ok?
I have limited funds
The 1st generation was very slow and had some glitches playing some discs. The price of the 2nd generation A2 has come down, and I would recommend that route.
