View Full Version : the blooming on mits dlp thread
PARASITE 04-27-07, 03:07 PM How many other mits dlp's owners with either a 732 731 831 are having the glowing colors against dark backgrounds, or who have had their light engine replaced once or more times? I am heading to my second light engine and what bothers me most is mitsubishi tells me if the light engine keeps failing after the manufacture warrenty then I will have to pay to have it keep getting replaced. I just want to get a feel for how many people are having this problem. If you want to see the effect just pull up a movie at the end with credits and see if the white letters glow or have some type of auroa around them. Feel free to include pictures. thanks

You going to delete this thread starter, now that you found the cause?
videobruce 05-20-07, 09:06 AM Why?
Then anyone else with a problem that finds the cause should delete their posts also?
6SpeedTA95 05-20-07, 12:23 PM I spent the weekend watching my uncles 57831 and it looked good most of the time and the rainbows were minimal for DLP. But there was some RBE and some blooming. It wasn't too bad but I noticed it especially on older B&W programming.
mattalgrand 05-20-07, 03:31 PM I own a Mitsubishi WD-65831 and I have had the light engine replaced once already.
However, the blooming has steadily returned since then.
This is beyond frusturating.
meverly 05-20-07, 04:29 PM Count me in. I have a 57831 with just under 1000 hours on it. I now notice the blooming
effects also. What bothers me is that some people are on their 2nd light engines and
the problem still comes back.
PARASITE 05-20-07, 07:12 PM my tech at work is the one who said it is because of dust. When he showed me the light engine, I could see dust all over the lenses. what I'm doing now is dusting my tv twice a day on the back with wet static wipes over all the open air spots. If the blooming returns, then Me and my Mits rep are gonna have words. BTW Mits did extend my warranty for another year because of this. I would suggest you guys who had your engines replaced ask for the same thing.
JohnnytheSkin 05-20-07, 07:17 PM I already hate this thread. I got delivery of a 57831 about a month ago, bought new from Vann's, as a replacement for my yellow stained failed optical block XBR1. Now I read about ANOTHER defect that is cropping up.
How widespread is this issue? I know you'll never have a perfect white/black line (at least to my eyes...I see some white fuzzies or haloes around words, traffic lights, etc., even on my old XBR1). I thought that was normal? The pic of the blooming posted on some AVS'ers blog was TERRIBLE during the movie credits.
I'm at around 250 hours, should I be worried? My wife doesn't want more TV hell, and it's obvious that there is no perfect TV out there.
meverly 06-06-07, 06:36 PM Blooming Update:
My local Mits service called today and will be out in a couple weeks to replace the Light Engine.
(Could have been sooner, but I wanted to be home)
So, add me to the list. I'm in no way confident this will fix it long term.
PARASITE 06-06-07, 07:15 PM gong on my fourth LE, and I can tell you this it is not dust. I clean the vents with the vaccum and installed a air purifer down stairs, besides that I dont live in a dust bowl, I have nice things and a clean house. Dont let them tell you its a enviromental issue.
Something bigger is brewing here and we will see how this place out. On top of the blooming starting to come back, my picture flickers on the left side, and the left side is not as bright as the right side. If I had this to do all over again I would get flat panel. If someone knows how to create a poll, please create a poll on how many 631,731,732,831,733,734, owners are having this problem. What is the most frustrating part about this is the fact that mits service still has the audacity " sorry if spelled wrong" to tell me that my tv is the first time they ever heard of this problem.
whotony 06-06-07, 07:52 PM mits 738321 since past halloween.
no blooming but it has started to flicker.
not all the time just occasionally and only a few minutes.
mattalgrand 06-07-07, 12:55 AM I refuse to fight this anymore. You all know it's not worth it. I'm going to return my 65831 and get a solid set this time.
Any ideas on what I can get for 4,000?
PARASITE 06-08-07, 07:27 PM I am done messing with this tv. I am buying a Pioneer PDP5080hd plasma next week.
I am not gonna have a light engine replaced every two months, and the black level on the new pioneer is light years better then anything else out there.
mattalgrand 06-09-07, 01:35 PM Parasite,
The ship is on fire and being decimated by a giant squid. We're jumping -- and how nice that water feels.
I'm getting a Panasonic TH 58PX600U 58'' 1080p plasma.
For now, all is right again.
PARASITE 06-09-07, 05:16 PM The hammer is coming down, and leaving no brick standing! I am little hesitant about the 50' coming from a 65". I sit 9ft away so I think I will be ok. I just dont want to pay so much for a 6010 1080p pioneer "6500". I am still considering the sony a3000 SXRD bravia, but I am really burnt on rear projection.
Mits is going to rue the day they gave up CRT. They could still be selling them as "the best HDTV made".
flashgordon333 06-19-07, 01:19 AM This blooming idea seems to be being pushed on to a number of others by a very few with inconsistent symptoms. The same blooming problem could easily just be caused by brightness or contrast settings that are too high.
My recommendation would be for all owners to keep an eye on their sets for extreme blooming, and contact service as needed. However, I have 1066 hours on my set as I type this, and have no signs of any blooming. Further because only a few people have actually reported it and even fewer have been able to clearly ID what exactly the problem entails, I think it is far from a Mits conspiracy at work. So I for one will remain a happy but informed/wary customer. Parasite and Mattalgrand I hope you guys enjoy your plasmas but for all of our good keep the axe grinding to a minimum.
Darylbnet67 06-19-07, 03:32 AM Anyone here with Mits reading about this problem, considered or tried installing any types of filters on the vents for these projections? If so what filter media type or setup, Fans?...?
meverly 06-22-07, 06:21 PM As I mentioned a while back I was scheduled to have my LE replaced due to the blooming. Today, at 1025 hours on the set, it was replaced. Picture looks fantastic
again, although for how long I don't know.
A couple of interesting points.
My other LE must have been deteriorating long before
the blooming as this engine has much more vibrant colors, in addition to no blooming. I'm sure it happened so gradually that it went unnoticed.
Also, the "air flow message" fix that has been talked about (removing the connector to the thermistor and hard wiring) had been applied to the new light engine
as shipped to the service center.
Well, put me down. I've got a WD-65831 purchased in April. I started noticing the blooming earlier this week and it has been progressively getting worse. I have changed all the settings and finally I came to my favorite reference site - avsforum.
If you need a reference for blooming, turn on the intro of Law & Order. I guess I'll give Mitsubishi a call tomorrow and work toward getting a new LE.
meverly 02-26-08, 03:59 PM Update to Post #19
Light engine #2 installed yesterday, 2/25. This with 1670 total hours on the set, only
600 hours after the first replacement. Still no word from MITS as to the cause of the problem, nor do they even admit there is a problem.
