That's good. What were your before and after settings and did you have any noise reducing circuits on in the end?
MidnightWatcher 04-27-07, 04:44 PM It really does make a difference. I don't have the HD DVD yet, but for those that are waiting for the May update to fully use the HD DVD, even the SD side makes a difference. The picture felt 'deeper' and more real after some basic calibration.
Keechy E36 04-27-07, 07:17 PM but for those that are waiting for the May update to fully use the HD DVD,
Whats all this about??? Firmware update or something?
BandofBrothers 04-27-07, 07:20 PM is the disc easy for noobs like me to use?
HomerJay 04-27-07, 07:42 PM is the disc easy for noobs like me to use?If you watch the SD DVD side calibration tutorial (~20 minutes, I believe) and make note of which test patters are used for which setting, it's not too difficult. The tutorial helps because it actually shows you what to look for when calibrating your TV. The HD DVD side does not include the same tutorials as the SD DVD side (i.e. only test patterns and demo material).

I'm guessing he's waiting for the HD-DVD update for the Xbox 360 add-on.
someone should post before and after pics.
snakeman 04-27-07, 07:54 PM the setting I was using was the famous "arts setting" in the hd-70
tweakers thread. the new settings are very diffferent and much better.
I dont think the disc is easy to use at all.
its alot of back and forth but there are special screens for the 3
dlp colors and those are wonderful!
it lets you set the colors one primary at a time
the disc is WELL worth the money. even at twice the price it would be worth it.
I will post settings on monday

Correct.

My picture was also improved using DVE HD-DVD. I didn't use most of the patterns, no service menu adjustments. Just the ones in the TV menu. Brightness and Picture for the most part. I coudn't get the color thing. I can only adjust Tint with out going into the service menu. Colors look great to me using the 100% color bars. I always wondered why the colors looked so bland on the previous disc, it was because the pattern was like 70% color bars. Go figure. Well off to finish watching Planet Earth on my new settings. Great PQ on this disc.
Jerry Curl 04-30-07, 03:28 PM I just got this disc and how no clue how to use it.
Fettastic 04-30-07, 03:35 PM I think I'll just wait for Avia.
I was confused with DVE. The tutorial on the dvd side wasn't much help at all. I only knew what some of the things where for. I ended up only changing the saturation and brightness. I think my tv looked pretty good to begin with and after DVE it pretty much looks the same.
Oh, and the online manual was no help either. To me its all written in Greek.

Then this release has failed you. Personally, this sort of thing needs to explain everything in laymen's terms and step you through a linear path. If it's not doing that, then it is failing the consumer.
Ultimately, a disc like this needs to be far more useful than the THX feature on DVDs. If all you're doing is adjusting picture settings, I don't think it's any better.

Same here, except I think my colors look a little flatter. It's a shame when the freebie little THX optimizer you get on a Star Wars DVD is "better" at helping people calibrate their TVs than this.
THX? Is that the thing that plays the weird sound at the beginning of some movies? It actually does something?

Go to any Star Wars DVD, go to special features, then click on the THX logo. It's extremely helpful in making sure your settings are optimized.
I bought the sd dve back in the day and that thing was so confusing I just chucked it and saved my pennies for a ISF calibration. Even if I hadn't ISFed my rig I still would not go near the HD DVE. What's this I hear you have to refer to the SD side of the disc? If that's the case, it's even worse than I thought. Like FETT implied, this type of self help discs MUST/SHOULD be simplified so the average person can actually benefit from it. I bet if you extract the relevant parts and then simplified everything, the disc will not be longer that 30-40 minutes. I have never seen the AVIA disc but I hope they learn form Joe Kane's mess.
Canary_Jules 04-30-07, 05:11 PM I think I'll just wait for Avia.
Me too. I had a pre-order in for DVE HD-DVD then I cancelled it when it was delayed. Reading lots of reports that the menu system isn't much of an advance on the previous SD-DVD version has convinced me to wait for Avia. I have Avia SD-DVD and it's really easy to use.
Does anyone know if the LFE problem had been addressed on the HD version?

I am not sure where the reports about the menu are coming from but in my opinion the menus on the HD-DVD side are vastly improved over the SD-DVD.

The LFE is still hot by 10db, I really don't see how a calibration tool would be shipped with this error. Especially since it was a known error in the first version.

Count me in the cancelled club. Menu issues with XA2, LFE hot, need to flip to SD side for info. No thanks.
lateralis 04-30-07, 08:37 PM so what is this "xbox 360 update" exactly? I ask because my DVE just came today and isn't playing so I assume there is some info about this somewhere?
It was useful in helping me tweak my picture to squeezt out every last drop of the best pic Q... :)

Here you go:
Hello All,
Please allow me to clear up the confusion here. I work with Joe Kane on distribution of this title, and have been present through all of the delays leading to this release.
As many of you have seen, DVE HD DVD experiences severe playback issues on XBOX 360 HD DVD add on players. ALL OTHER PLAYERS HAVE BEEN TESTED EXTENSIVELY IN THEIR CURRENT FIRMWARE BUILD. All Toshiba players play this disc.
As has been suggested in this thread and others concerning DVE playback, you are correct - past delays were due to slight changes in each new firmware build - and the program had to go through the same rigorous testing and revisions each time. Finally, a disc was produced that adhered to the spec set forth by the DVD forum, which has been confirmed by its working status in all current firmware builds of Toshiba players.
The XBOX 360 dashbord update to be released on May 7th will fix these problems. All HD DVD players must have Internet upgrade capabilities, and we are all learning first hand why this was built into the spec.
Thank you for your patience!
Jeffrey Goodman,
DVD International
lateralis 04-30-07, 10:30 PM thanks
DavidHir 04-30-07, 10:49 PM The THX patterns are not accurate. Stick with Avia or DVE.
For HD DVD, I was using the "Dr Z" patterns....but found there is a difference in color decoding compared to HD DVE. I'm not sure which is more accurate.
methos75 04-30-07, 11:14 PM I hear the DVD disc is useless for those with DLP's, is this true?
mchuckp 04-30-07, 11:43 PM I popped my DVE in today. I'm having a weird phenomena. My A2 fails below black using HDMI but is fine using Component. I have an HDMI receiver that passes the signal so I tried doing a direct connect to the TV and got the same thing. My previous DVD player passed below black so I don't feel it is my TV.
This leads me to believe that my A2 won't pass BTB via HDMI. Anyone else have this issue?
BTW, doesn't matter if I used the SD or HD side of the disc.
More info: TV=4674 Samsung DLP 720p.
Confused,
mike

the disc is great for dlps
it has a special color adjustment just for dlp projectors
DangerBoy 05-01-07, 09:55 PM are you going to post your settings, or are you still tweaking?
Is this disc helpful with plasma displays?
