View Full Version : The Bourne Identity July 24th Cover & Some Info

Universal Studios Home Video have revealed the US HD DVD release of The Bourne Identity on 24th July 2007. Although not officially announced the trade sheet for the DVD release of The Bourne Files confirms the HD DVD release of The Bourne Identity complete with details on the U-Control interactive features.
Given the title of “The Treadstone Files” the U-Control content includes 9 interactive character dossiers, GPS-enhanced intel providing satellite views of the film’s locations and information gleaned from the Treadstone training material.
All extras from the standard definition DVD releases should also be carried over.
Been waiting for the HD DVD of this since May 22, 2006 when the sequel was released and it wasn't. :p
jfrlhobbs 04-27-07, 08:19 PM The sales on this one should do very well!!!

Looks like the pre-order goes up June 19. According to the picture posted above.
TrueHD?
Most likely not, BUT Universal's DD+ tracks are 24-bit and Warner and Weinstein's TrueHD tracks areall 16-bit, SO Universal's DD+ really isn't missing much.
eapleitez 04-27-07, 10:13 PM Looks like they're giving this one the royal treatment. Definitely picking this one up.

I'm totally going to purchase this one...Hell Yes!
Can't wait to see this again...been awhile.
It would've been sweet if Universal included a Free Pass to THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM. I'm sure if will draw some attention to HD DVD.
It's been awhile since Studios did this with DVD, I'm surprised Sony didn't do it with their recent Spiderman 2.1 release.
Universal is like the goody-two-shoes who sits in the front of the class and gets A+'s on everything she does. I'd much rather have her on the team than the stoners sitting in the back row that are the BD exclusive studios.

fistofsouth 05-01-07, 09:40 PM Nice. I’ve wanted to get the Frau into the Bourne Series, but I wanted to wait until Identity was released so I could start her from the beginning. I’ve got an anniversary in August; perhaps I should start dropping hints.
Since this is a catalog release it will be single-sided so the combo-haters and artwork lovers should be happy.
FremontRich 05-01-07, 10:26 PM I already have the Bourne Supremacy... the Bourne Identity will make a nice bookend...
superklye 05-03-07, 04:55 PM Awesome! I can't wait! I love this series! :D

From what I can tell it's pretty much identical to the SD DVD release, plus the necessary HD-DVD indentifiers.
You could always waste more money and print out your own cover.

The 2nd one is. Not this one.
pcweber111 05-04-07, 02:40 AM I still haven't watched the first movie so this will be a treat. Having bought the sequel when it came out the story didn't make much sense to me but it still worked as a well thought out piece so I will definitely have to sit down and do a double feature once I get my hands on the new disc.

How do you get that to play on your XA2? Can you squish it into the tray and it still plays?

When someone gets this, can they compare the DTS track on the Collector's Edition to the DD+ track on the HD version? I'm more concerned with the audio. If there is little to no difference, I will hold onto my Collector's Edition SD DVD.
pointless2 07-04-07, 10:40 PM There is one scene that I remember was amazing audio-wise in the theater.
It was the very subtle moment in Bourne's Paris apartment when he almost psychically senses that another Treadstone agent is about. There is a kind of 360 degree sound "pan" that made the hairs stand up at the back of my neck.
Has anyone been able to duplicate this experience in their home theaters?

I'm sure there will be a difference, the bitrate of the DD+ audio is twice that of the DTS track on the DVD version. (754 kbps DVD, 1509 kbps HD DVD)
I wonder if this is a title Universal is going to double dip on when(if) they decide to re-release all three of 'em in a box set with TrueHD.

I beg to differ. All of Universal's True HD tracks have been 24bit. This is one movie that SCREAMS lossless. I'm pissed at Universal for not giving this lossless yet a POS movie like WAR gets it.
I'm still going to pick it up as it's one of my fav movies but Universal should have gone all out on this one.

Most of the newer HD DVD announcements from Universal with TrueHD are 16 bit, but yes The Bourne Series deserves lossless! Come on Universal!
Foxarwing42 07-05-07, 12:28 AM Wait, Universal had TrueHD stuff out? What's in TrueHD from Universal? Maybe I'm out of touch but Universal putting TrueHD tracks on HD DVD is pretty rare.

Even though, most Universal releases are not TrueHD, I really enjoy the 1.5Mbps soundtracks...:D...they sound great! It does appear that after September, all Unversal titles are announced with TrueHD... :)...it is nice that Darkman is TrueHD, too...

Brad1963 07-11-07, 04:05 PM I just got notification that my HD DVD's of THE BOURNE IDENTITY and IN GOOD COMPANY are shipping. Hopefully I will get them this weekend.
UCFKevin 07-11-07, 04:22 PM I wonder why the second one came out first?
I can't wait to snatch these up. Do they have a fanbase? I don't know how much moolah they've made, has to be a good amount to call for a trilogy.
I personally feel these movies are criminally underrated. They're very much old school in their execution and are just reakky well done and quite entertaining. The 3rd looks pretty badass.
bakpakva 07-11-07, 04:25 PM I will wait for the Trilogy with TrueHD sound. If they never come out, then a rental will have to due for me :D

I'm really looking forward to this one! I hope Universal gives us the kind of transfer this film deserves. Can we expect another 1.5 Mbps DD+ soundtrack? The one on Bourne Supremacy was great.
ni9ht_5ta1k3r 07-14-07, 01:08 AM I think with it being such a major title for them (unlike Wedding Date) that they cannot afford to screw it up.

OK, I did. Universal's hit it out of the park with this one for sure! Superb video and audio (despite no TrueHD). I always thought that the SD version was a great transfer, but where before, for instance, you could see the patterns in the brown sweater Bourne wears early in the movie, now you can see the loose threads, etc. Overall darkish transfer, but that's the way it's supposed to look. The 2 U-Controls are cool (and I'm not a gimmick fan at all). The first is a PIP, with cast/crew interviews, and the second is The Treadstone Files, which gives you a full-screen dossier of each character as they first appear. Nice info, not sure how often you'd use it, but good to know it's there. The only slight problem I noticed is that one time they were both options and I was able to see TTF, but when I switched to PIP, the picture would not appear, only the audio. I was able to go back to Treadstone, but still no PIP video. Don't know if it's repeatable or not or whether it was because I was skipping chapters frequently.
Not having used U-Control or IME too often, is it normal that when the movie shrinks in size, jaggies, etc. can appear? They did in this case, but again it's not like I'm watching the movie at that point anyway.
Bottom Line: Big thumbs up Universal!
Mr. Cinema 07-14-07, 05:27 PM Glad they put the Doug Liman commentary on there. That was only available on the "Collector's Edition" dvd release.

I agree completely. I've sampled Bourne, Streets, Nutty II, and Scent of a Woman and Bourne is awesome looking. Streets of Fire is also excellent, but it definitely has a slightly softer/older look to it. I don't think it's quite the slam dunk that The Warriors was, but a HUGE upgrade over the previous non-anamorphic DVD. Nutty is the real disappointment in the bunch. The transfer is pretty lacking overall. It's soft and just doesn't impress that much. The biggest surprise, however, is Scent of a Woman, which blew me away quite a few times. The brightly lit outdoor stuff is crisp and wonderfully detailed. The indoor stuff can look a bit flatter from time to time, but it is far, far better looking than I had imagined it would be. I was also impressed that Universal created a new 5.1 track for Scent where the previous DVD was 2.0.

Nope, nothing. I'm pretty bummed Universal can't bother to put the trailers from their otherwise barebones DVDs on their HDs. (and the LD even has two trailers) Although I was really jazzed to see that the disc actually has the cool original cover art and not that lame photoshop redo for the last DVD re-release that appeared when the title was announced.

How's the audio on Streets of Fire? From what I remember with the DVD release, the sound track kicked ass with lots of bass and good use of the surrounds.

It's actually pretty good, although it doesn't seem to have the same punch (read: bass) that I remember the DVD having, but I haven't watched the DVD in a while and I haven't grabbed it yet to compare, so it could be just a hazy memory. I also have the Korean DVD with DTS, so I'm going to check it against that. I'll do that tomorrow and report back.
Brad Ley 07-15-07, 08:12 AM How's the audio on Streets of Fire? From what I remember with the DVD release, the sound track kicked ass with lots of bass and good use of the surrounds.
Alright, I got really curious after answering, so I went and grabbed the disc for a late night evaluation (it's a house and no one else is home this weekend, so volume isn't an issue).
Overall, I feel like **on my system** the HD-DVD DD+ is slightly lacking the bass oomph that the DVD's DD and DTS tracks have. However, there's a slight variance in the LFE between what my Denon receives as a Multi-Channel PCM (as would come from the Toshiba) and the legacy tracks that can be bitstream decoded. I've measured a 3db difference when cross checking with HD-DVE. I'm still trying to perfect my levels, but it seems like it's a never-ending task. But with regard to the fidelity of the DD+ vs legacy, I give the edge slightly to the HD-DVD. Voices sound a hair smoother and music had a bit more bounce. I also found surround use (which appears mono) to be more cohesive and a fit better with the front channels. The biggest constraint for both versions is simply the age and limitations of the original mix and elements.
Having said that. Despite my statement that the new track might be slightly lacking in the bass department (which could admittedly be completely in my levels and require further tweaking), the difference in picture quality between the older transfer and the new HD-DVD is so dramatic (and SOF was one of the better looking non-anamorphic discs out there) as to make any audio deficiencies (real or otherwise) completely meaningless. It would be like kicking a hot chick out of your bed because her cell phone rang in the other room.
But don't expect it to look or sound brand new. I would say it compares quite favorably with other discs of the era and better than many newer titles (as I said, Nutty II doesn't look much better than a good upconverted DVD).
MSmith83 07-15-07, 08:24 AM Thanks for the information. The SD DVD's picture quality was horrible from what I remember, so I figured the HD DVD had to be a significant upgrade even if it isn't up to snuff when compared to other HD DVDs.
I'm curious about your audio issue. What Toshiba player are you using? If you are using a player with multichannel analog output, you should know that the player's speaker settings affect HDMI just as it does multichannel analog. If you haven't done so, make sure you have all the speakers set to "large" in the player's setup menu. This does make a difference, as when I owned an HD-A1, I noticed weaker low frequency output from my subs when the speakers were set to "small." Therefore, make sure the full-range signals are being sent to your Denon for proper bass management by setting the speakers to "large" in the player setup. This bypasses the player's own bass management.
If you are using an HD-A2, then this doesn't apply to you.
By the way, I'm now using an HD-A2 and Denon AVR-4306. Everything matches perfectly for me when comparing legacy codecs being sent as bitstream and being decoded by the player.
lgans316 07-15-07, 09:38 AM It would nice if the owners post their reviews on Bourne Identity and not Streets of Fire.
Brad1963 07-16-07, 11:40 AM I recieved The Bourne Identity and In Good Company Saturday; watched both this evening.
My thoughts:
"The Bourne Identity": Everybody's worries are laid to rest, Universal did a bang-up job on "Bourne". It is a fantastic transfer; the print is clean and crisp, the color hues are on target, flesh tones acurrate, it is entirely free of any grain. It flat-out looks terrific and I could not find any fault with the PQ at all. Audio is quite good, I do not have home theatre system, only my 2 stereo speakers; but it sounded great. The supplements are impressive, pretty much everything (Including the trailer) from the past 2 DVD releses of it was carried over, plus more. The U-Control is a nice feature but there is also 'treadstone files' which you can access throughout the film. Overall this is a great HD DVD and great companion to "Supremacy". NOW BRING ON 'ULTIMATUM"!
"In Good Company": I thought it was a nice transfer. The colors were accurate and the picture was crisp and clean. There were a couple scenes I thought were questionable. But overall Universal did a nice job on this title.
McNulty 07-16-07, 06:29 PM Thanks for the quick review. I ordered the same two movies and looking forward to them. I was a bit worried since Universal is losing it's mojo a bit lately. I am happy to hear those two are fine.

Thanks for the quick review. I ordered the same two movies and looking forward to them. I was a bit worried since Universal is losing it's mojo a bit lately. I am happy to hear those two are fine.
I've got the Bourne Identity pre-ordered at Amazon. Does anyone know if they ship titles out early to arrive on the release date? Or is it shipped out on the release date?
finaly is coming,i going to watch the supremacy just after this one.

Very nice :). I'm a Prime member, so hopefully I'll have this by Tuesday.
Tim Glover 07-17-07, 01:13 AM DVD Pacific shipped mine out on Saturday...should be here by Wednesday of this week! :)
kevinuk 07-17-07, 01:45 AM Got my copy Friday :D
For some reason we seem to get the Usa releases about 2 weeks ahead of the USA release dates.
Got mine this morning, and I have looked through all the extra's. Just starting to listen to the commentary track - which Sounds informative, for instance at the start of the movie, the director notes how Bourne is at the harbour-and when the van passes through frame, Bourne has dissapered, blink and you will miss it.
The image compares favourabily with the d-theatre version. What I can say is how much I hate the cover art. The original poster art is so much better.

Bah. Not that a day really makes a difference, but I can't see any reason why they couldn't ship two day orders out on the Friday in order to get there on the following Tuesday.
Oh well. I guess I'll get my copy on Wednesday.
Tim Glover 07-21-07, 01:52 AM Got my copy earlier today and it's excellent! I think it's a better disc in terms of image over the highly regarded Supremacy HD DVD. Different directors and different styles for sure but the Identity HD DVD looks a tad cleaner and smoother. Terrific audio as well.
