I'm considering to stop renting HD DVD's from Netflix or trying to get the new releases the day after. What do people do with these discs, they look like they were used for coasters at a party or dragged on cement. I just received Feast, it was scratched to hell and gave me the error code on my XA2 midway. Restarted the movie and got almost to the end and had to fast forward slightly. I even washed it with Dawn and hot water but the damage must have been done. Maybe I'll rent the SD versions since I love the upconverting on my XA2 and if I really like it I'll buy the HD version. Just a thought. ;)

I live in Chicago and thus get mine from the Chicago shipping facility. I have never had a problem with the 60+ HD DVD's that I have recieved from Netflix. Also I get my movies in 2 days (one day each way) so I cant see my self dropping netflix anytime soon. Sorry to hear about your troubles.

When I owned an A-1, I would only rent new release HD DVD's.

Now that I have an XA2 I don't worry as much.

I rented The Break-Up recently (it was pretty scratched up) and had no glitches.

I am 100% happy with netflix like I have said before. I think since I live in the Milwaukee shipping center there is less HD traffic and I get discs in great shape! I just got smoking ace's today and it looked brand new!

You might try using a light abrasive, something like tooth paste, during the cleaning process. Wet the disk, spread a thin layer of toothpaste on the disk, wet again, and then with a soft cloth wipe off the toothpaste and then wash and wipe until all the toothpaste is gone. That will often deal with the worst of the scratches and allow the disk to play without issue. It's worth a try.

As loud as the 360 drive is, it's read through every single HD DVD I've gotten from Netflix (about 30, now). Really a quality drive for reading through discs in such shape like that. Some have been pretty bad condition!

i hear people complain about how loud the drive is but i've never personally noticed anything. do you guys sit right next to the drive or something? i mean, if it's beside your tv and you're sitting 8 feet away, how can you hear it with the movie playing and sound comming out of your speakers???

I switched to Block Buster Online for a couple of months and they were not much better. Now I have an extra $18.00 a month. Both online rental services suck IMO!

I will continue to rent from Netflix because it's the best way to pre-screen before deciding to buy a movie. Yes some folks do treat disc terribly and I hate to see a fairly newly released disc delivered with scratches but what are you going to do? I got Planet Earth as soon as it was released from Netflix. The first disc froze on the polar bear cubs playing scene. I had to skip past it and a few other scenes. It had a small nick or tiny bubble on the disc. I might have been done during the manufacturing process though.

I'm not going to cancel Netflix it's just HD DVD's seem that they can't handle heavy abuse. Feast is a fairly new release. The surface had scratches and small specks all over. During most of the movie I noticed a very thin dotted light blue line running horizontal, you could see it in a dark background, that's how I new the disc was screwed up.

I cant believe you guys are having such a problems with your hd dvds. I thought that since most people that bought a hd dvd player would respect the discs more. I guess i have been lucky and i hope to continue that streak. I have two disc in my mailbox downstairs, hopefully the are good to go.

I'm wondering if the problem is just poor protective coating or no protective coating on the HD-DVD discs. Does anyone know (or has watched to see) if the scratch problems are title-specific?
