I don't know if it's my TV today or Xbox 360, but a lot of scenes in Smallville HD really look bad, especially Martha Kent scenes. When I paused it, looked like VCR Quality.

Anyone Confirm it's supposed to look that way or something wrong with my TV/360?

The problem must be with your equipment.

What player are you using? I believe the A1 switches to half res when the disc is paused which will make the image look worse than what you are really watching when the video is playing.

I hope its not the movie. I was looking at getting that series..

Even so.... half res of 2 million pixels (1080i) is 1 million pixels (what is seen in 720p)

Smallville is a very fine looking and sounding set.

Pre 2.0 firmware the G1 players would field pause instead of pausing on a frame. That shouldn't be an issue any more.

I'm using an HD-A1 through a Toshiba 56" DLP and Smallville looks AMAZING! Out of the 15 HD movies I currently own, this series has some of the most exceptional visuals. I'm sorry to hear you are not getting the full experience.

I have Smallville. It looks good to me. A lot better than it does on hdnet over the cable. Don't know what you're expecting, or why only Martha Kent scenes would be bad for you. As others have said, there must be something wrong with your equipment.

OK, I think my TV Olevia 232v and Xbox 360 may not really like each other, or something.

232V has Resolution scaling issues, I think.

Help? How to fix my problem?

It IS the HD DVD, NOT the TV!

See, it's pretty bad!

It looks like a porblem with your TV (or the camera you used to take the picture). I have the XA2 and a 50" Samsung DLP and I can say for sure that my image does not look like that.

You need to get your story straight too. On the thread you linked, you said:

I don't know what I did, but all the images showing are awful quality right now.

TV, Component, VGA ALL look bad!

If all your inputs look bad, and all the images look awful (I'm assuming you used multiple image sources), it's probably your TV.

I just watched that episode last night using my XBox 360 HD-DVD add-on. It looked great, much better than those pictures. I use the VGA input, and I have a Westinghouse 32 TV.

Really? Color/Tint is High (Meaning REDDER) Otherwise I believe the Martha Kent scene was not good

Here I do have a Lesser Red Color version

The point we are trying to tell you is that none of us are seeing images that look like VHS on the Smallville discs. I think about everyone generally agrees that the images are great, and even an improvement over the HDNet Smallville broadcasts.

I wouldn't go as far as to say they are the very best image you can get on HD DVD, but the set is definately worthy of at least 4/5 stars for picture quality. In my book, a HD DVD that is VHS quality would be 1/5 stars (or maybe even 0/5).

I watched some of the episodes on a Xbox 360 addon (before I sold it) and some on my XA2. Both had an equal picture quality in my eyes. So if you are really seeing a VHS quality image on your set, then either your 360 is flawed, or your TV set is flawed. Based in your comments in other threads about how bad you PQ is on all your inputs, I'd say your TV is a great place to start.

You may want to start by setting the output of your Xbox to match the native resolution of your LCD, or at least the closest selection available (so with a 768 LCD, would set the 360 to 720p). I have seen some LCD's that are horrible at scaling. My Sceptre PC LCD looks horrible at any resolution other than its native resolution. I had to purchase a new PC card that supported the native (768) resolution to even use that LCD.

Picture Speak Louder than words, so I don't think whatever I said or say DOESN'T matter.

Remember I am telling you my setting was Off in Color and Tint, too, so it was THAT RED!

As for me saying my Tuner and Component Input was also bad... that was a FALSE alarm. Because I thought some of the SD programming should been HD programming, and I WAS wrong! Those were NOT HD programs and so they looked poor.

And for Component I looked at another DVD, it was BETTER quality. I guess the DVD I watched was just not very high PQ.

So, again this is the Picture that I am Concerned about, it looks really poor.

I think they are because the Cameras used to film these scenes in Smallvilel aren't really HD-Ready, that's why.

Again

Well, I guess a Tier 2 is about Fair. Not be a Tier 1, I guess I am Cool with that :) Cuz some of these scenes are Obviously Not True HD.

No, your setup is screwed. Smallville is a good looking HD DVD. The pictures you post are absolutely atrocious and are not at all representative of the Smallville set. You need to go back and check the resolution on your XBOX because that looks like really crappy 480p to me.

Either that or your TV is a piece of garbage.

Ok, then

Please do me a favor. Take a shot of the same scene and let me see how it looks on yours.

You can stop showing us a bad picture caused by a bad camera/display. It doesn't mean anything. Stop, breath, and just look at how many people are telling you the same thing, that Smallville is great looking HD DVD material, and in no way resembles anything like VHS, or even regular DVD for that matter.

FYI, Smallville is shot on Super 35mm using Kodak Vision 5279, 5248, and 5217 films, depending on what type of shot it is. This camera provides a resolution about 12X better than what 1080p can reproduce. So don't act like the cameras or film are at fault.

I don't have that ability. If you've seen the show presented in HD on TV, it looks like that, but maybe 20% better.

What would that prove? That we are using a different/better/worse still camera, or that we might be better/worse photographers.

Sorry dude, something is screwed up somewhere in your setup if you are getting a VHS or even DVD quality picture from the HD DVD version of Smallville.

Now are you saying that you are getting a VHS picture quality and that you consider this to be okay as Tier 2 material? The contradictions continue...

HDphile22
04-30-07, 04:41 PM
I didn't say the Entire Smallville HD DVD looks like VCR. I ONLY said that particle scene looked like VCR quality, and it maybe exaggerated though. :)

You seem to think I am Putting down the Entire Smallville HD DVD, it isn't so!!

Just that Scene gets on my nerves!

Furthermore...

After watched other HD DVDs, I came to the conclusion it was just that scene ONLY that had such problems. Others HD DVD are alright/fine, HD Quality.

Does my Set have issues? Sure, it's NOT well-calibrated (I am still waiting to get DVE), and Redness was too high, but compared to You all pictures in the screenshots thread, I ain't see much big difference between ours!

Now, you might want to also get a camera and take a screencap of the exact Martha Kent scene I described. IF yours is WAY better than mine, I will Accept I am wrong!

bboisvert
04-30-07, 04:57 PM
I'm lost.

So the point of this thread is that in all 20-something episodes of this show, a single scene of Martha's face on your non-calibrated, red-heavy TV looks like Tier 2 material?

OK, fine. I'm sure it does. But I'm not sure that qualifies as a "Smallville Quality Problem"...

HDphile22
04-30-07, 05:02 PM
What's the Best way to take a screenshot from TV, BTW. What option on Digital camera?

Cuz there is a lot of, frequency/waves seen on the output, you know.

Let's put it this way, A LOT of scenes appearantly shot with that camera they used to film those.

Now Here is a Screenshot from Discovery Atlas: Brazil, look HD enough for me.

So is my Set Messed up for real?

Digital photos or photos of any kind are WORTHLESS in this discussion. If you cannot provide digital frame grabs, please don't bother.

I've watched the first 4 episodes of Smallville and the HD DVD looks great. What you are complaining about is called film grain.

Smallville is shot on 35mm film, not with HD video cameras. Not everything is going to look like DiscoveryHD.

So you are saying that because it's called Film grain, it look that way?

Look, the purpose to ask you guys take a photo of this scene yourself, is for me to compare to yours.

I know A) Mine has color/tint issues it's Redder B) Camera Reduces the PQ, but it still would let me know how big of a difference it is from yours to mine.
