View Full Version : Chicken Little BD PQ vs any HD DVD movie
Primus67 04-28-07, 08:01 PM i WANT this post here cuz i need infor from hd dvd owners!
it got moved to the bd section and that defeats the purpose.
i saw some of CL at circuit city and the pq was so good that it nearly looked 3d. i'm wondering if it was because it was on a non-crt and i have a crt that none of my hd dvd movies look that incredibly crisp. have any hd dvd owners seen CL on bd and do any of you guys with a plama, LCD or DLP seen an hd dvd that compares to this? i saw happy feet and didn't think it looked as good as CL. maybe it's because i have a crt?
MichaelHDDVD 04-28-07, 08:03 PM King Kong? MI: III?
HD-DVDwonder 04-28-07, 08:07 PM wrong forum - post on general HD software
Arutha_conDoin 04-28-07, 08:09 PM I've always thought that movies like CL and other animation movies have more pop to them then regular movies.
highdefsw 04-28-07, 08:14 PM I vote for King Kong as one of the best 3D movie on HD DVD. I have not seen CL though. Animated movies seem to be easier to hit tier 0. Most tier 0 blu ray movies are Animated.
What resolution does your crt support?
Primus67 04-28-07, 08:36 PM i'm watching it on 1080i. the tv in CC was a sony plasma.
yeah, cgi seems sharper since it's a totally digital picture. but like i said, happy feet didn't look THIS good.
i'd like to hear from hd dvd owners who HAVE seen CL on BD and can compare an hd dvd movie to it.
halfsane 04-28-07, 08:40 PM corpse bride has some 3d moments for sure
DangerBoy 04-28-07, 09:19 PM I had to LOL when I saw the thread title and who posted it.
Sell off your HDDVD collection and buy yourself a blu ray system, I think you will live longer.
As far as the topic, it might be best to ask someone who is dual format.
Since everything is different between the two setups you're comparing you realy can't compare.
Yes HDDVD has plenty of 3D pop, if you want a CG movie to try, have a look at Ant Bully.
Also the display and how well it's calibrated will have a big effect on the amoutn of pop you will experience.
I own a HITACHI 57' CRT & my HD DVD's look beautiful. Have you had your TV Calibrated either by a Calibration Disc or a ISF tech? If you get your TV calibrated your picture will look a lot better & your TV will appreciate it

Having own Chicken Little and King Kong/Riddick, I agree with all the coments above.
Chicken liitle is the best looking animation movie on either format, but for live action king kong and riddick are the best on hd dvd for 3D.
Casino Royale as a live action on BD, has some amazing moments, just not as consistant as KK

I'd add Black Hawk Down to that list also.
Tim Glover 04-29-07, 01:24 AM The Searchers looks pretty dang good on HD DVD.
Chicken Little is great on Blu ray but I am sure there are a few HD DVDs that stand head to head with it. But just a few. ;)
BBS G35 04-29-07, 03:30 AM I think Happy Feet with my 360 via component had more 3d pop and looked slightly better then Chicken Little with my PS3 via HDMI.
Audio on the other hand...Damn you MS and your night mode!

Your opinion. Happy Feet looked better to me.
But there are over 20 HD DVD movies that in my opinion look better.
TheLion 04-29-07, 05:45 AM Chicken Little has the most striking PQ of any (animated) title on both formats in my opinion - although the movie itself is questionable at best :p Happy Feet doesn't even come close to it's level of detail and (texture) definition.
Best "live action" PQ has to be the new high-bitrate VC-1 release of Deja Vu, followed by Crank.
My overall favourite releases for PQ remain King Kong and Chronicles of Riddick on HD-DVD (great prodcution design, I don't consider these to be "live action", more like a blue/green screen demo though) + I-Robot on D-Theater.
The interesting part of my list is that it involves 3 different formats and all three common video codecs. Go figure how much PQ is really dependent on our premature format war arguments ;)
Have a nice day.

ditto on that. gotta wonder if fx heavy movies are easier in some way to encode, since many of the "top tier" flicks fall into this band.

ain't that just the truth.
methos75 04-29-07, 07:37 AM Am I the only one don't impressed with Chicken Little's PQ, I found Ice Age and Ant Bully better looking than CL.
Gamereviewgod 04-29-07, 09:46 AM Haven't seen Chicken Little on Blu-Ray, but I'll definitely throw Any Bully out there, though it is cross-format disc. Simply stunning PQ.

Totaly disagree especially on the Crank and Happy Feet comment. Crank is deceptive movie because virtually all of the scenes were shot EXTREMELY close-up. This gives the illusion of more detail and pop. Hardly any long distance photography used to evaluate the film properly unlike Riddick.
Happy feet is a movie that benefits greatly from having a system capable of displaying great contrast like current plasmas. On an LCD the blacks are not done justice and the film suffers.

For the record, in the HDTV Software Media Discusion Thread there is a poll asking what has better PQ, CL or HF. It's a draw, 50% 50% exactly at the moment.
BBS G35 04-29-07, 03:10 PM Since the link to that poll was posted in the BD forum, i guess i should do the same here.

too bad. i'm not a fanboy. and who said i wanted to sell off my hd dvd collection? i got rid of a total of 2 dvds.
i kept hearing what a bad movie ant bully was, so i'm not gonna get that one.
i have riddick and king kong and corpse bride. but like i said, CL has the best PQ so far. BUT i have a crt and i saw CL at circuit city. i'm just wondering how much of a difference a different type of tv might make.

if you saw it on an LCD, its my limited experience that a clearer sharper picture is offered over CRT's in many cases

I just LOVE my Barco 1208/2 PJ . I have a 10 FOOT wide screen .

MichaelHDDVD 04-29-07, 04:30 PM I guess in your valued and well-balanced opinion at least 67 "HD-DVD movies" "look better" than the best Blu-Ray has to offer - considering that you don't have a Blu-Ray player...
BTW congratulations on 1,167 posts since you joined avsforum in Feb 2007  That's quite an "accomplishment"...
I don't have to own a Blu-Ray player to see Blu-Ray movies, Best Buy has the prominent displays.

That, and having a few format neutral friends and family does the trick as well.
Thats where I'm lucky...my neighbor right next door has a PS3...I'm able to check out his stuff almost anytime I'd like...
As for CL, the demo at BB looks GREAT, can't say the same for POTC 3 (I think it's 3) that follows it, but yeah, CL looks very nice, hard to A/B it with something like HF though because you obviously like to do that on the same TV, like at home, where you're familiar with the PQ of your rig and can go back and forth between the two titles...

Agreed. Bought it in SD for the kids, suffered through it once. Refuse to purchase a bad movie just because it is in HD.
Oddly enough, CL is the only kid's movie we own that they haven't asked to watch more than once. Even they know it's a steaming pile....:D

Do you have a CRT Front or Rear Projector? Also like I posted before have you had your CRT Calibrated?
Primus67 04-29-07, 09:50 PM i have a rear projection. nope, i never had it profesionally calibrated, but i think i've done a pretty good job myself so far. plus, i doubt the plasma at circuit city was calibrated.
it's the reverse for me. my kid wasn't interested in happy feet, but he's seen chicken little a dozen times. i thought it was way more entertaining. happy feet just seemed really dumb and had an even dumber and abrupt ending. and the music sucked.
Happy Feet (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/happy_feet/) :) :D

schroedk 04-29-07, 10:30 PM Am I the only one don't impressed with Chicken Little's PQ, I found Ice Age and Ant Bully better looking than CL.
After reading all of the posts raving about Chicken Little's PQ, I thought I was the only one that was underwhelmed. I don't know if it's because I am the dad of 3 1/2 y.o. and a 1 1/2 y.o. daughters and thus have seen Chicken Little (SD) about 50 or 60 times, or what. But honestly, I was excited to see CL on Blu-Ray, and when I did, I just was not impressed vs. the SD-DVD upconverted on my A2 (and previously on my A1). FWIW, I'm a dual-format consumer with both the HD-A2 and a PS3 feeding my Toshiba 52hm84 720p monitor. I enjoy HD regardless of format, so I don't have an agenda here. Before I saw the BR version of CL, I was set to replace our SD copy; after renting from Netflix, I no longer am tempted.
SirJMon 04-29-07, 11:16 PM i have a rear projection. nope, i never had it profesionally calibrated, but i think i've done a pretty good job myself so far. plus, i doubt the plasma at circuit city was calibrated.
I doubt the plasma was calibrated either, but with that being said, I have seen hundreds of CRT displays look so terrible due to either poor set-up or just flat out wore tubes. I can honestly say that I have never walked into a BB or CC and seen a picture better then what I am use to seeing with CRT's with good tubes and proper set-ups, regardless of what type of display technology it is.
I cannot judge your set-up because I have never seen it. Nor can I judge your calibration abilities. But what I can tell you is that I have seen many many displays where the people thought they had them setup really well, but it turns out that they knew hardly anything about how to acheive a good picture or what one even looks like.
i have a rear projection. nope, i never had it profesionally calibrated, but i think i've done a pretty good job myself so far.
I also did a DIY Calibration on my set. Then brought an ISF Tech in. He worked on my set & what I thought was a good job done by me, wasn't even close. When he was done with my TV, it was totally different from what I had my TV looking. I now have a TV running @ 6500k, with both Grey-Scale & Black-Level dead-on & Over-Scan reduce nicely.
If a professional Calibration is an option for you, I say go for it, you nor your TV will regret-it

I have both watched CL and Happy Feet (HD DVD) at my friend's and we both agree they are not in the same league...HAPPY FEAT DESTROYS IT!
Crank as well is not in the same leaugue as KK, in quality of film, box office, story, or PQ. Get a grip. :)

Riddick and Corpse Bride have amazing transfers on HD-DVD, and Pitch Black is excellent considering its age and budget. You are looking at photos of an HD-DVD image taken with a camera -- certainly looks nothing like the real thing. There's a big difference from this and an actual screen shot from a PC. Try taking a picture of Chicken Litle with a digi camera and see how much "pop" you see then...

Happy Feet is crisp, colorful and has plenty of pop IMO...here's a shot I took, and believe me, I'm a beginner at screen picture taking, but as mentioned - in person, it sure as hell holds it's own...
On a 65" RPCRT, NOT professionally calibrated (but I think I do a pretty good job of that myself - not pro, but pretty good), unaltered in PS other than reducing it to a smaller size.

Why because I think Crank looks better than King Kong? I never said Crank was a great movie. I am only referring to picture quality. In "my" opinion I rank Crank higher. If because you don't agree with my opinion I have no credibility then your right.
I will agree that the pictures of Happy Feet look stunning. I already knew that because I have the BD version. Movie looks spectacular in both formats.
I would also agree that those pictures of Riddick and Corpse Bride don't do the movies justice. It was just a little sarcasm on my part. I have seen Corpse Bride and it is definitely one of the best looking transfers in any format.

Why would you get the Bluray version of Happy Feet when the HD-DVD version is superior?
Same thing with Goodfellas, why did you wait for the BD version when you could have had the superior version much earlier?
goceltics34 04-30-07, 01:31 PM Why would you get the Bluray version of Happy Feet when the HD-DVD version is superior?
Because I already stated that I am no longer buying any HD DVD movies. Just a decision I made. Of course you don't agree with that but that's why. To each his own I guess.

Sorry bro, your about a week late. I already offered it to friend, who agreed to take it off my hands. He is making the jump into HD movie content and was looking for a player.
Da Rafsta 04-30-07, 02:05 PM Ant Bully in HD-DVD is visually stunning and it's CGI animated and perhaps there's your answer.
SirJMon 04-30-07, 04:50 PM Why because I think Crank looks better than King Kong?
More so because of the content BBS G35 showed us about your few little posts here at the HD-DVD forum.

Of course, how convenient. :D
i WANT this post here cuz i need infor from hd dvd owners!
it got moved to the bd section and that defeats the purpose.
i saw some of CL at circuit city and the pq was so good that it nearly looked 3d. i'm wondering if it was because it was on a non-crt and i have a crt that none of my hd dvd movies look that incredibly crisp. have any hd dvd owners seen CL on bd and do any of you guys with a plama, LCD or DLP seen an hd dvd that compares to this? i saw happy feet and didn't think it looked as good as CL. maybe it's because i have a crt?
Hardware question.
If these shots are your example of "pop" then I am not impressed. Those look like crap. Chicken Little looks unbelievable! Crank is probably the best looking High Definition movie out there at this time (non animated).
BTW... I own King Kong and still rate it below Crank.
Wow - strong indeed is the Hydra in this thread! :p
FWIW, Chiken Little looked OK, but the material was very simplistic. Happy Feet looked much better, and had much more challenging material to encode, as there were thousands of shades of white in almost every scene.
I agree with the poster above who sides with the HD DVD releases as being the best non-cartoon releases also.
And I disagree with the poster who says that Blackhawk Down is in the "best" category at all. I did not like the PQ on that at all.
Primus67 05-02-07, 10:03 AM I also did a DIY Calibration on my set.
If a professional Calibration is an option for you, I say go for it, you nor your TV will regret-it
i'm thinking about it, but i don't know where to look for one, and what is the cost of it?

ISF offers a locater service to find someone in the area. I was able to find someone local to me right through AVS. I had two different displays done plus having the audio calibrated so it was a bit pricey but well worth it. The PQ difference was definetly noticable compared to what I already thought was a good DVE calibration and I'm glad that I had the work done.
rodimus79 05-02-07, 10:43 AM The cgi in Serenity looked quite 3D to me (on a 1080p LCD setup)
