Got a mx700 off ebay with software go to connect it but all I have is lpt port. Used a gender connector but the software does COM ports and cannot find the remote. You cannot tell me that the people who have this remote are all on older computers. What are my options here? Can I do anything to get it to connect via lpt?

You just have to get a USB Serial port cable.

I'm actually surprised you have an old parallel centronics port and not an RS232 port. As that may be, I doubt anyone makes a P1284->RS232 converter. As the previous poster said, you need to purchase a USB RS232 adapter.

You might want to double check your motherboard. Quite a few motherboards have the serial port header pins on the board, just not hooked up to a rear panel connector. You just need to pick up a cable with a PCI slot cover connector at a local computer shop if you have the header pins on your board. If you have a parallel port, you probably also have the serial port. The manual, possibly your bios, or the mfg website specs/faqs should give you the info.

OR, You just have to get a USB Serial port cable.

Save yourself a lot of time and trouble and get a Belkin or Keyspan serial-to-USB adapter. The preferred model is the Belkin F5U109 USB PDA adapter. Not all USB adapters work with the MXEditor software so you could just be spinning wheels with other brands.

I wonder if anyone has had success using a serial to USB adapter. I tried this on my new notebook and was unable to establish communications with my MX-700. My software requires a serial port selection. Apparently new mx-700 software or virtual serial port is required.

If you use the adapter I mentioned, you shouldn't have a problem. There are others available that work as well. There is no "new" software for the MX-700. You set up the adapter as a specific COM port and make sure the MXEditor is set for that COM port.

The USB Serial port cable suggested in the thread is $23 +tax +shipping at newegg.

(I saw a PCI serial port card for $33 there by the way)
What I suggested is using your own serial port that you didn't know you had. The "cable" is just a 2 wire connection which you should be able to buy much cheaper at a local computer shop. You could even make your own out of one of those spare hard drive activity LED cables most every computer case has.
