aasoror 09-18-08, 04:58 PM Is this all correct, or:
1. Is there any way I can successfully upconvert to anything higher than 720 x 480p?
2. If not, is there any other reason why the “HDMI > DVI” connection would be preferable to the “Component” connection? (If not, I might as well return the “HDMI > DVI” cable & DVI switchbox, which the vendor told me I can do, and use the “Component” connection instead…)
Thanks,
r-gordon-7
1. The only firmware version that is reported to correctly work with HDMI-DVI is the official YGB7328I (http://www.pioneerfaq.info/click/click.php?id=261). The problem is the Hakan's firmware is based on the most recent official firmware (so it wont be compatible with your DVI display).
You might consider downgrading if you are willing to sacrifice "region free".
2. SD-DVD's wont be upconverted on component, so you will get only 480p via component cable.
Hope that helped.

If player is multiregional, then it will remain multiregional when up/downgraded with an original fimrware.
I might modifiy the HDMI -> DVI OK firmware if it is a demand for it!

Please excuse my public display of ignorance, but I bought my DV-400V as a region-free player from an on-line vendor that sells them that way. I have no experience with modifying these things myself (via firmware or otherwise).
Maintiaining region-free (and PAL) operation is crucial to me - I bought the DVD player primarily for that reason (my wife is from China and we have numerous Chinese DVDs - none pirated - the contents of which are only available in DVDs coded with China's Region code - and often only in PAL).
Right now they do play fine on the DV-400V - I don't want to risk losing that, even though also being able to upconvert (these Chinese DVDs and/or my US DVDs) to higher than 720 x 480p on my older Sony KE -42TS2U Plasma (w/ a DVI input but no HDMI input) would also be greatly appreciated.
What is entailed in "upgrading the firmware"? How does one do it, are there any dangers in doing it - and can it easily be "undone" if something goes wrong in the process, or if it causes other problems, incompatibilities or loss of features?
Thanks,
r-gordon-7
My unit is just way too dark. Im using hdmi>DVI adaptor into my sammy dlp. Can anyone give me some advice about where to crank or decrease the factory video settings. Sorry if this has been covered before but i cant find it on a search.
The picture is starting to really annoy me as i cant even make out much of the background
As im sure most of you know these are the settings in the Video Adjust Menu
Sharpness (Soft, Standard, Fine)
Brightness (-20 to +20)
Contrast (-16 to +16)
Gamma (Off, Low, Medium, High)
Hue (Green 9 to Red 9)
Chroma Level (-9 to +9)

I really hope you didn't pay much compared to the factory released version because here is what they have done any ways (hkan's firmware being the only multiregion released firmware ever available)
- chose a firmware version from here (http://www.pioneerfaq.info/english/dv400.php?player=DV-400V&question=Firmwares): according to hkan's you won't lose region free operation if you downgraded to the original firmware with "HDMI>DVI OK".
- follow the burn instructions here (http://www.pioneerfaq.info/english/burn_guide.php), only worth noticing tip is that you need to label the disc "PIONEER", and that it must be a CD not a DVD and a CDRW should work.
- Just notice "as usual" that you might brick your DVD player in the process, and you have already voided the manufacturer warranty by purchasing a hacked player to start with ;)

Adabisi 09-25-08, 09:18 AM Is anyone else having this problem?
I had the video output set to "Widescreen 16x9" and I noticed that 4:3 DVDs were stretched and not displaying properly.
I changed it to "Widescreen 16x9 Compressed" and that fixed the problem.
But, it has caused the reverse issue with 4:3 videos through the USB. Now with the video output set to "Widescreen 16x9 Compressed" 4:3 videos are stretched and not displaying properly. They display properly with the video output set to "Widescreen 16x9".
Is there a fix for this?

No, I didn't pay too much extra - and for me, having it "pre-done" was worth it for the certainty of not turing my DV-400v into a brick - plus, the vendor warrantys the all-region mod and the unit (to compensate for the loss of factory warranty). To me, that's all well-worth the extra few dollars to have someone else do the mod. Too bad it didn't come with HDMI -> DVI OK firmware though, as I was not aware that upscaling wouldn't work going from HDMI -> DVI (and in fact, was initially told by the vendor that upscaling would work that way...)
If Hkan does develop the HDMI -> DVI OK mod, is there any chance of Hkan offering to install the mod (obvioulsy for a fee) if both the fee & shipping both ways is paid by the customer? Would be greatly appreciated by the weak of heart among us (e.g. me ;) )

If you brick your player I'll help you get it back to life!
But here is no need to fear a update!
Just follow instructions!
Burn a CD-RW with the lable PIONEER, the name of the firmware file also have to be in capital letters, YGB7328I.BIN
Then pop it in to your player, close tray!
A screen will appear to invite you to press Play!
Press play! use Play on remote control, it seems to be best!
Player will now copy the file from the disc to it's memory!
Tray will open, just remove the disc, dont do anything else!
Go out to the kitchen and make your self a cup of coffe ;)
Now you will again see the Pioneer Logo, player would say NO DISC and the update is finished!

Just to make sure that I understand this correctly...
If I follow the above instructions and install the YGB7328I.BIN firmware:
1. My "already-modded" all-region + PAL & NTSC DV-400V will STILL play all DVDs of all regions, and will STILL play both PAL & NTSC DVDs; and
2. My DV-400V will also then upconvert to something better than "720 x 480p" using the DV-400V's HDMI output into my 5 year old KE-42TS2U Sony Plasma's DVI input, even though my Sony Plasma (which supposedly supports both 720i & 1080p) has an actual maximum display resolution of "only" 1024 x 1024"?
In other words, after installing the YGB7328I.BIN firmware in my DV-400V: then, when using an HDMI -> DIV cable, I will be able to upconvert on my Sony Plasma (with its maximum resolution of "1024 x 1024") to something better than "720 x 480p"; and this will occur without losing the DV-400V's all-region and PAL & NTSC playback capability?
I just want to make certain that the answers to all the foregoing questions are "yes" before I risk proceeding with any changes to the firmware.
Thanks,
r-gordon-7
Hi!
The multiregional setting will remain as it is now!
The PAL/NTSC is actually alread set on your players pcb card.
If you open the player and have a look at the cards inside!
You will find both on the electric and digital card the word PAL/NTSC.
As usally I cant gurantee anything!
Firmware upgrading is allways done on your sole risk!
If you feel unsure, just don't do it!
What firmware version do you have now?
r-gordon-7 09-28-08, 10:11 PM Unfotunately, I don't know what firmware is currently installed in my DV-400V, because I bought it online, already "region free" and didn't have to install any firmware myself. (I bought it from International Electronics, 546 Crossen Ave, ELk Grove Village, IL 60007 - http://www.regioncodefreedvd.com/pioneer400.html).
Is there any way to display the firmware that's currently installed?
Thanks,

quoting pioneer faq (http://www.pioneerfaq.info/english/dv400.php?player=DV-400V&question=Firmwares):
How tell which firmware version your player has:
HOME MENU,INITIAL SETTINGS,go to OPTIONS (dont enter the submenu),press "DISPLAY" on the Remote Control
r-gordon-7 09-29-08, 10:17 PM Thank you, aasoror. There was no mention of this in the manual - and I simply didn't recall seeing it in the "pioneer faq".
Anyhow, it displays as:
ROM VERSION : YGB7821A

ed_in_tx 09-30-08, 11:08 AM Did you try setting back to the factory defaults? You listed what adjustments are available, but did not say what they are set to, or what you have tried setting them to, so hard to say. I have a 410 myself and the gamma adjustment makes a big difference in the overall contrast and brightness.

"Audio settings" equalizer - "POP",
Virtual surround - ON,
Audio-DRC - HIGH,
"Dialog" - HIGH.
"Sharpness" Fine
"Brightness" +7
"Contrast" +14
"Gamma" - LOW
"HUE" - 0

Good luck,
some one have other good settings? be please to share with us.
I am using my dv-400v's analog audio output to drive my headphone amps for the first time. But I couldn't find a volume control on the remote control. What a surprise! Did I miss anything?
No, you didn't miss anything. audio outputs are usually fixed volume on DVD players. They're meant to be connected to receivers or TV's which have their own volume controls.
backwoodz 11-16-08, 08:52 PM Can anyone tell me if its possible to get this player to run 1080i thru the compontent cables instead of just the HDMI cable? My projector is 1080i compatible but this unit only displays 480i/p thru the cables as far as i can tell.....or are all DVD players set up the same?
My reciever also does not accept HDMI :(

I dunno if this will work for you, but I needed to use DVI since I also don't have HDMI. The firmware that came with player wouldn't allow me to do 720P through DVI, but once I downgraded the firmware it worked. Maybe the same thing will work for you.
Go here: http://www.pioneerfaq.info/index.php?question=Firmwares
Scroll down to the DV-400V section and download the YGB7328I firmware. It should say HDMI->DVI OK next to it. Then burn it to CD and load it in your DVD player. It should ask you to upgrade the firmware. Hit ok, and then let it do it's thing. There should be some proper instructions on that site about how to do it. Just look for it.

Go to pioneer faq and unless you are using DVI you can upgrade to the leatest firmware without any problems.
unknownsoldierx 12-29-08, 01:11 PM Has anyone had any luck playing DVD backups in this player? I have tried high quality Verbatim DVD+R and DVD-R 16x media, burned at 8x and 4x speed, but they don't play. DVD+R can't be read and DVD-R skips horribly. Quality scores are always between 95 and 99.
Works fine for me. I use TDK DVD-Rs and I've never had a problem with them. Could be your media... Could be your burner... Try burning at a lower speed and try again. Try upgrading the firmware on the DVD player if you haven't already.

Reno Hillbilly 01-27-09, 12:08 PM I own the Pioneer DV-400V and have a question. I put many AVI files on one DVD. Is there a way to make a menu listing the AVI files so I can click on the desired file and play it?
JMCurtis 01-27-09, 03:25 PM As far as I know, no, not unless you actually create a real DVD using a software [PC or Mac] authoring program.
You can however, on the DVD player itself, use the Menu button, and use it to select the AVI file you want to play. However, after the selection is done it will continue playing through the rest of the files. You could put each selection in its own directory and at each conclusion it would go back to the directory screen. I've used this method to create categories on my Divx discs.
Ognjeni 02-06-09, 11:23 AM Aloha to all you guys and girls,
can someone PLEASE help me.
i bought pioneer 400v and i have samsung 46 " (series 6) full HD tv and they are conected over HDMI.
Do i need to upgrade to new FW ? Is there anything important beside subtitles settings ? I 'm ok with mu current subs.
I tryed to play HD star wars movie over usb. it has ressolution of 1920 x 816 and it is .WMV format.
it says rezolution is not supported ? My tv is full HD and this 400v players does upscaling to full HD (1920x 1080p ) ...i set that rezolution in dvd settings.
I know it is not HD player but this is .WMV file...and if it is upscaling to 1920x1080p why it wont play that kind of rez ?
is there any way to play this movie ? or any other movie in HD rezolution please help.
And..is there any fix or hack so peioneer 400v can play from NTFS (usb..hdd) ...because of limitations of fat32 to 4 gb per file.
p.s. would it make any difference if i connect external hdd ?
Please respond and help.
thank you
The resolution of the file is to high!
max resolution is 576x720
This is the resolution it can upscale!

but i have been playing 780 x 480....haw is that possible than ?
There is no problem more than the file you tried to play is in to high resolution! (the one with resolution 1920 x 816)
Pioneer gurantee that the player will be able to handle 576x720, but it could probebly handle up to 600x800.
This is not a HD player.
This player have the capibility to upscale a SD signal to 1920x1080p.
Your player does exaktly what it should and is in no error!
It even tells you that it cant handle the resolution! ;)
jjigglers 02-10-09, 05:23 PM Does anyone know what the USB file manager sorts by? It is incredibly confusing that it isn't alphabetical. Is there a fix for this? I have the updated firmware.
If I'm not mistaken it will sort it by when the files was added to the USB memory!
baddubbin 02-11-09, 11:14 PM I have been searching around forever. Is there anyway to get the file browser to sort the files alphabetically in usb mode rather than by create date? A custom firmware or updated pioneer firmware maybe?
slytrans69 03-21-09, 06:27 PM After waiting all of my life to find a TV set larger than 27" with an acceptable picture good enough to own, I found it. I bought a Pioneer PDP-5010FD Kuro for $1400 from a friend getting a divorce. The manufacturing date 7'28/08. Firmware:

One note is that high definition sound can only be achieved through 7.1 channel analog signal. Thus my HTPC has an ATI 4350HD PCIe video card which has an HDMI port and passes 7.1 audio through from my onboard 7.1 channel Realtek HD sound. Everything works great. I run the audio out from my Pioneer Plasma to the receiver for sound and it is always perfect whether 5.1 or 7.1.
radosuaf 03-23-09, 05:09 AM AFAIK you can only get 5.1 from this DVD, so the best option would be a digital connection to your receiver.
Check if 1080p does not crop a few pixels from the sides (2 or 3, I think) with zero overscan - this is the reason I use 576p.
slytrans69 03-25-09, 04:08 PM readosuaf is quite correct. I referred to my HTPC in this regard, because the video card has 7.1 channel pass through. This is for using my PC. When watching from my DV-400K stand alone, it is not running through my PC, obviously, so therefore my ATI video card is not in play. However my Pioneer SC-05 does an excellent job of producing a 7.1 channel sound field. I am probably never going to get a Blu Ray player, because the next generation Pioneer is too close to hitting the market. When I do get that one, it will be in my HTPC to take advantage of my free TIVO it provides. I will then be able to record the discs like I do with my Pioneer DVR-115L, which was flashed to be read and write RAM disc. And that will be true 7.1 channel.
Dmitry1501 04-15-09, 08:27 AM Hello!
It looks like HDMI output of my DV-400V is dead. DVD is not discoverded by TV (SONY KDL-40W4000), HDMI items in DVD menu are present but inactive - I can not change the settings (resolution, colour). Has anybody faced this problem? Could it be becouse of interconnection problems? At "good" DVD player, are HDMI items in DVD menu active if HDMI cable is unpluged?
Thanks!
Hi there. I have this player for more than a year and no complaints so far. Few questions thou:
1.) I am about to buy external drive, most likely WD 500gb MY Book, and I read that i should format it in FAT32. Can anyone confirm that this HDD will work with Pio 400V.
2.) When formated as FAT32 will I be able to use all 500gb?
3.) What do i need to do with partitions and what is the easiest way of formatting it in FAT32 from Windows 7 beta machine?
4.) Any answers on limitations to number of folders and files?
5.) Anyone knows how to sort the files/folders on HDD so they go in alphabetical order?
6.) Any limitations on file size?
Apart from this I really love this player. Its easy to use, reads pretty much everything i need it to read, and has this excellent USB function which combined with PQ, reasonable sound, easthetics of the unit and cheap price makes a very good buy.
Thanks for help!
rkoshack 04-24-09, 05:23 AM I was wondering if anyone could help me with a problem I'm having with this set all of a sudden. When playing xvid/divx movies the movie always freezes less than a minute in and locks up the entire machine to the point where I have to physically unplug it from the wall to be able to open the tray again. It only happens with xvid movies tho...reg dvd's are fine
It used to work just fine but all of a sudden it's been doing this...I know 2 other people with the same model and it works fine on theirs. Is is a setting that I may have accidently changed that's conflicting with playing xvid movies? Is something dirty inside the machine?
Do a reset of the player!
In OFF mode, press and hold the STOP button and then press STANDBY/ON button.
It's the buttons on the player it self you shall use!
Player will start with CLEAR in display and all settings will be reseted back to factory default!

In theory it should work. Any harddrive formatted with FAT32 should work
2.) When formated as FAT32 will I be able to use all 500gb?
In theory, yes
3.) What do i need to do with partitions and what is the easiest way of formatting it in FAT32 from Windows 7 beta machine?
None of the Windows utilities will be able to format all 500GB to FAT32. You will need to use a third party utility, and you will need to format the entire drive as one big partition. Try using the utility found here: http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm
If that one doesn't work, then google for another utility. There are several out there.
4.) Any answers on limitations to number of folders and files?
No
5.) Anyone knows how to sort the files/folders on HDD so they go in alphabetical order?
I don't think there's a way to do this, but I could be wrong
6.) Any limitations on file size?
FAT32 won't be able to handle files larger than 4GB

Player will start with CLEAR in display and all settings will be reseted back to factory default!
ok I tried this and it said clear, then I put in another disc with xvid movies on it and it still froze after a minute or so and locked up the machine so I had to unplug it from the wall. I dont get what's wrong...the movies work fine in my friends dv-400

Try updating the firmware with one posted here:
http://www.pioneerfaq.info/english/dv400.php?player=DV-400V&question=Firmwares
Keep in mind, some are modified firmwares and some are official Pioneer firmwares. I currently have the following loaded on mine:
CP1252 StM V2.1

rkoshack 04-25-09, 03:49 PM thanks I'll give that a try
1.) I am about to buy external drive, most likely WD 500gb MY Book, and I read that i should format it in FAT32. Can anyone confirm that this HDD will work with Pio 400V.
Try using the utility found here:
If that one doesn't work, then google for another utility. There are several out there.
4.) Any answers on limitations to number of folders and files?
No
5.) Anyone knows how to sort the files/folders on HDD so they go in alphabetical order?
I don't think there's a way to do this, but I could be wrong
6.) Any limitations on file size?
FAT32 won't be able to handle files larger than 4GB
Many thanks weirdg!
WD My Book 500gb DID work indeed and it came already formated FAT32 so didnt have to worry about that. It has 1 partition and size is just below 500gb. Transfered 60 movies so far and didnt have any problems. Regarding the order of files and folders i think it reads them in order you put them on the HD.
Does anyone know if that has been solved with some new firmware?
Also, does any new firmware sorts the file/folder name limitation in the menu screen? My original firmware version is YGB7516A. Also, does new firmware alows it to play h264 format?
Many thanks in advance.
About the limitation on files and folders:
This is the case for CD/DVD:
You can have up to 299 folder and the total number of folders and files can be 648 (folder + files = 648)
How ever if this is the case also for USB I cant say!
You should how ever remember that if you have a lot of files in different format, MP3, AVI and JPG, it will take longer to scan the HD for whats on it!
Does anyone know if that has been solved with some new firmware?
Not all of the changes is known!
Also, does any new firmware sorts the file/folder name limitation in the menu screen?
No!

ValjeanPhantom 05-12-09, 09:41 PM It's obvious that all of Pioneer's 2007 HDMI models had a firmware revision on August 27, 2008. It's obviously an HDMI issue and nothing to do with DVD-A/SACD, or even analog video like on the DV-300. So I decided this would be the most appropriate area to talk about it. There doesn't seem to be a discription of the new changes.

Very interesting, has anyone tried it to see if they have dealt with any of the divx playback issues (multispeed FF/RW or time search on USB).
I am on the latest Hakan's and I am too reluctant to upgrade then get disappointed only to downgrade again.
Or perhaps one should wait till Hakan releases the new patched one.
Thanks guys,
I don't know if this has been answered or not (didn't read through all 36 pages) but when I hook an Ipod up, it doesn't play even though it is in the USB drive. Is there a solution for this? Would that update help with this problem at all? Thanks.
ValjeanPhantom 06-11-09, 11:31 AM Has anyone tried this? If so, does the coaxial digital audio output still work? Also, when playing SACDs, will the 400 send stereo and multi-channel SACD in its native DSD form via HDMI?
ValjeanPhantom 06-19-09, 04:06 PM The new firmware can be found at http://www.pioneerfaq.info/click/click.php?id=422. Now it's no longer a choice. At last, you can have a combination of the latest factory firmware and Hkan's new features. One thing you should consider is the amount of money and time he puts into webspace, players, and parts in order to continue developing firmware as Pioneer releases them. If it means a lot to you that he continue his work, you can send him a PayPal donation to support@pioneerfaq.info.
NetComrade 06-22-09, 12:01 AM I have some DivX files which the PC will play but the player wouldn't.
I compares the frame size on the files that it plays and files that it doesn't, and they appear to be the same.. is there a way to determine which divx files the player would not play, and maybe 'downconvert' them?
NetComrade 06-22-09, 10:42 AM Suspecting it's some 2gig file limit.. any way to get around that?

I use drivesort to sort files on my external hard drive. you will need to run this utility every time you place files on your hard drive. You can find this tool here.
http://www.anerty.net/software/file/DriveSort.php
Please note that this tool alters file allocation table so use at your own risk. I have been using it on regular basis without problems.

Yes you can use any of them:
- YGB7328I HDMI->DVI OK
This is original firmware, its the last version that works ok with TV that has DVI input instead of HDMI (all later releases are problematic)
- CP1252 StM V3.0 18 Jun 2009
This is HKan latest update based on the latest official firmware.
This wont give you more speed, but rather an enhanced viewing experience, it will mainly make your player region free and support long file names on USB drive. (you can check the change log in the firmware page for more extensive list).
Hope that helped,

Tatsenaiga 07-16-09, 06:02 AM Hi all, i really, really would love to watch a BBC TV series i have downloaded, it's called Earth to Earth Pole to Pole and is in 1280 X 720P Resolution in the MKV format. Well as our trusty player cannot play that format to the best of my feeble knowledge i used Xvid to convert it to Xvid, which should be playable on the DV-410 should'nt it? However it come up with a message saying this resolution cannot be supported. It's connected via HDMI (setting output to 1280 X 720P, from the 1920 X1080 P on the Pioneer) did'nt work. My LG LCD TV is full HD so should support this too.
Do i have to recode the MKV into Divx format rather than xvid, i thought this player supported both, please help me as i'd love to watch this HD Documentary in it's full glory.
Cheers

I had this hooked up with component cables on my old tv with no issues. Someone said it could be a hanshake communication problem but not sure. just hope it's not my display.

- Bad news: You can never watch it in it's full glory (unless you use high def. playback). The player will only accept SD input and upscales it to HD resolutions if needed.
- Good news: You can still watch it in DivX, XviD or WMV as long as the resolution is under 720X480 @ 30 fps (NTSC) or 720X576 @ 25 fps (PAL). This would be equivalent to the "Home Theater" Divx profile (if you are using encoding profiles), again Xvid should work but u need to lower the resolution. (remember to check also the audio track, DTS, DD, AC3, mp3 should work but HD fancy audio tracks wont work). Easiest to use free encoders like Dr. DivX ;)

YGB7821A (August 21st 2007)
YGB7C12A (December 12th 2007) Can be downloaded from here (http://www.pioneerfaq.info/click/click.php?id=279).

And Hakan's region free firmware based on the latest official version (here (http://www.pioneerfaq.info/click/click.php?id=427))
Hope that helped,

No problem Dano,
I would recommend Hakan's (here (http://www.pioneerfaq.info/click/click.php?id=427)
region free + long file names support.
At the very least you can try the latest official one here (http://www.pioneerfaq.info/click/click.php?id=412).
Best of luck, remember to read carefully the update procedure, and never unplug/reset the player unless instructed.
Theoritically speaking "yes you need nero".
But practically, anything were you can use to burn the CD and setting up the label correctly should work (even direct drag and drop using XP/Vista).
The idea is real burning software (nero, magic iso, roxio or any burning software that usually ships with a new laptop/desktop) will enable you to setup the other options (multisession, iso mode) to insure maximum compatibility for the firmware disk.
Although I think if the disk is not compatible for some reason the update wont even start, so xp drag and drop + verification after burning should be fine, but I honestly would play it safely and use a program where I can set up all the required options.
Hope that help,
p.s. you can use a CDRW for the update instead of wasting a disc for nothing. remember that a DVD disc wont work for the update.
Thanks,
Cervin922 07-24-09, 04:52 PM Hi all,I need your advice...
I was using my DV-400 for playing movies though external 2.5" HDD (WD - 120 GB) and it worked fine.
Yesterday I bought a new HDD (Seagate - 500 GB) and after I've connected it to my DV-400, it was written "USB DATA" and was not able to play/ view the entire disk.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for your time.

The USB port on the pioneer is 1.1 (not enough power to run an external HD on its own).
Does the new enclosure have an external power source or does it run solely on USB ?
Cervin922 07-25-09, 01:21 AM It doesn't, as all external 2.5 # HDDs I've seen...
aasoror 07-25-09, 01:58 AM It doesn't, as all external 2.5 # HDDs I've seen...
Is the USB cable a Y cable ? Its certainly a power issue, I had the exact same scenario with my 2.5" external enclosure that didn't have external power but had Y usb cable, so either connect one side (data) if you have USB 2.0 port, or 2 sides (data+power) if you have 1.1 ports.
When I tried connecting the power side to my laptop and the data side to the Pioneer it didn't work and it took forever and I only got the "USB Data" on display.
Does anyone know if using a powered USB hub would solve the USB 1.1 power problem?

I just tried loading Hakan's latest release from your link, and I'm left with a flashing white screen on my Samsung LCD. It seemed to load fine, it said "Upgrading", but after a minute or so the player went off, and now I'm left with a random white screen that keeps flashing. It has been doing this for about 10 minutes, is this what a bricked player looks like?
Is the tray still open?
Does it say loading on the players display?
Close the tray, unplugg the power cord, put it back after 30 sec, then restart your player!
The tray is still open, and it doesn't say anything on the display. I'll try unplugging the power like you suggest.
Phew, that worked. Thanks for the help, I was really hesitant about pulling the power.
Also, for anyone with a 2.5" drive that doesn't work because of lack of power; I used a Y cable, plugged one end of the Y into the player and the other into a small powered USB hub I have tucked away beside the player, and it works great. I guess the USB hub supplies enough supplemental power to make the 2.5" drive work.
BTW, the new firmware looks great!
E.WEEBER 08-04-09, 05:26 PM Hi all,
I have had a Pioneer DV400V connected via HDMI to my 27" Sharp 32d62u television. I've been having a maddening problem with the audio where it drops out sporadically. It almost sounds like it's "skipping." No problems with the video at all, but the audio on even brand new discs drops out for split seconds. Any ideas of how I could resolve this issue?
The Punisher 08-11-09, 02:19 AM Not sure what is up. But almost all divx files i try to play off the USB key freeze and lock up the unit, having me pull the plug and plug back in in order to bring unit back to life..
I tried the latest modded firmware out and still does the same... Any ideas why some play and others don't ?

could this player be set to bitstream instead of pcm? I am only able to set the audio to pcm using hdmi. Another minor issue why cant i change audio track on the fly. I have to go to the dvd menu in order to switch to a different audio track.
I'm getting only 2.0 Prologic (PCM) out of my DV-400V via HDMI, I've tried switching "Digital Out" on and off, and i have HDMI audio set to "Auto'. Just about ready to get a COAX SPDIF cable to see if i can get something to say "5.1 DD" or something...
Allrighty, managed to get some 5.1 out of my DV-400V. Connected it to my receiver via Coax SPDIF, and HDMI, went in set it to "Digital Out = On", and "HDMI Audio = Auto" and voila, i have 5.1

Nope :( , its a limitation in both the original and Hakan's firmware. No time seek on USB.

If someone has applied one of these firmwares, can you please let me know what the difference is between CP1252 and CP1254 and which one would you recommend?
Thanks!!

CP1250 to CP1255 are the languages of the file browser. Go to the firmware page and pick whatever one best corresponds with where you are, as well as with what language media you play. You'd want to use V3.x so you can be using the latest factory firmware Hakan's mods are based on.
damngood 12-07-09, 05:14 AM Could anyone help me with this problem....
I bought a DV-400v a couple years back and it played any dvd from any region right out of the box but now it won't anymore. It's been a while since i've tried to play anything out of Region 1. When I try to my dvds from region 2 it's telling me it's the wrong region. Does anyone know if there's a reset or something i could do to unlock the regions.
Thanx
I know this is a little late, but on pages 15 and 16 of this thread, everyone claimed that the only reason the DV-410V existed was so that Pioneer had something new to show at the 2008 CES. After reading manuals and comparing firmwares, the gamma control has been improved. On the DV-400V, the gamma options were High, Medium, Low, and Off. On the DV-410V, the gamma options were from -3 to +3. Ever since the September 2007 release of the DV-800AV/LX50/58AV, the gamma control always went from -3 to +3. Believe it or not, DV-410V firmware will successfully install and operate on a DV-400V. You just have to remember to change YJB to YGB the first time you do so. After that, it will respond to YJB firmware files. I understand that the newer DV-420V firmware will load on it, but USB won't work until you go back to either DV-400V or DV-410V firmware. I just thought I'd let you know that the 410 is an upgrade from the 400.
grolschie 01-15-10, 05:54 PM Hello. Lots of questions, sorry.
Is "blacker than black" only available on modified firmware? Can someone explain what is required to make blacks not much look grey on the DV-400V please? Does the LCD TV have any requirements?
Also, do the firmwares on PioneerFAQ (original or modified) support Region 4 players (that have been already made region free)?
Any legal issues with downloading said firmwares?
Thanks in advance.

As far as downloading firmwares, the only issue is that if you need your player repaired, make sure you have the original firmware loaded before hand, or else your warranty won't be honored. Otherwise, there is no problem using the Smash the Mac PioneerFAQ firmware. As far as blacker-than-black is concerned, it depends on how your TV is set, as well as whether you use HDMI, Composite, S-video, or Component.
grolschie 01-16-10, 03:35 PM Thanks. I use HDMI @ 1080i into an HD-Ready 32" Samsung and would like better blacks. But not sure if it's a limitation of the TV or the player.
Thanks. I use HDMI @ 1080i into an HD-Ready 32" Samsung and would like better blacks. But not sure if it's a limitation of the TV or the player.
If you use HDMI, then the blacker-than-black feature in the PioneerFAQ firmware will not make a difference. Is your TV a CRT Slimfit or LCD? If it's a CRT Slimfit, then start with your TV and DV-400V picture settings in the nutral position. More than likely, TV channles should look fine with the TV picture controls set to nutral. So you'd be better off playing with the DV-400V's brightness control til you get a good result. If your TV is an LCD, play with the TV's backlight control, as well as the brightness control of the DV-400V. The following applies whether you have a CRT Slimfit or LCD. The DV-400V has an option in the Initial Settings>Video Output menu called HDMI Color. Try Component, RGB, and Full Range RGB. If you have the StarWars Episode IV DVD, or Alien DVD, there should be a series of THX test screens on disc one of each title. If you can get those to display correctly, then you should be good to go. Good luck.
grolschie 01-19-10, 10:29 PM Thanks for that. I think I will stay with the factory firmware then perhaps.
unknownsoldierx 01-24-10, 05:23 PM Anyone use DVD-R or DVD+R media? Mine won't read Verbatim DVD+R (MCC-004-00) or DVD-R (MCC 03RG20).
It will read a Ricoh DVD+RW (RICOHJPN-W11-01). But that disc is on it's death bed.

penny506 02-11-10, 10:43 AM I am about to do the firmware upgrade on my DV-400V Pioneer DVD Player
My current Firmware version is:YGB7516A
I'm going to be upgrading to YGB7328I as I am going hdmi out from the DVD player and into my samsumg TV which only has DVI input on the back.
I'd love to be able to upconvert dvd's after this process is complete - as I can only watch in 720x480 now.
I'll be getting some CD-R's and doing a burn using Windows XP burning tools likely.
Wish me luck
penny506 02-15-10, 01:13 PM Upgrade successful!
I can't get 1080p but I can do 1080i after this upgrade at least with my Samsung tv - so that's a good start - Excellent thanks.
Galnospoke 02-23-10, 04:36 AM 400v and 410v - what about full support packet bitstream? I cant find this info anythere. Someone say: only 410v, others: 400v yes, 410v has problems. What is true?
I did the firmware upgrade to YGB8827A_V31_CP1252 without knowing what it does, lol.... It was successful and noticed the Pioneer logo has changed. What features does the firmware add?

If you hold he ENTER button next to the 0 until the player turns off, the player's EEPROM will maintain a multi-region setting regardless of what firmware you install after the fact. That is untill you put StM V3.1 back in and hold the CLEAR button next to the 0 until the player turns off to restore the original EEPROM multi-regional setting. If you send interlaced 480i NTSC video via Composite, S-video, or Component, the black level shift drops from 7.5 IRE to 0 IRE, allowing for deeper blacks. If you have trouble with darker scenes, go back to one of the Pioneer original firmwares. If you have a TV that can accept raw NTSC and Pal video, set TV Type to Multi. If not, set it to whatever system corresponds with your TV. The DVD Fast Start feature allows most movies to start without disc menus. If the movie doesn't start, press TOP MENU and start the movie by making the appropriate DVD menu selections. Prohibited User Operations has been partially disabled so you can change the audio and subtitle streams while certain movies are playing which normally didn't let you do this. If you're into compressed audio and video files such as AVI, DivX, MP3, MPEG4, WMA, and WMV, the StM V3.1 can display longer file names than the Pioneer original firmwares. You can switch back and forth between firmwares as much as you want to. I do it all the time with players that cost between $200 and $500. I luck out every time! Another thing that's been reported by the experts to work is success when installing next-generation DV-410V firmware on this model. By doing that, you just increased the range of the Gamma control. Right now, you can only choose between High, Medium, Low, and Off. The next-generation DV-410V firmware changes it from -3 to +3. In order for the DV-400V to think it's a DV-410V, you must rename a DV-410V firmware file. For instance, change YJB8A13A to YGB8A13A. From now on, the 400 will think it's a 410 and recognize YJB firmware files. DV-420V firmware will safely load in the DV-400V, but you might lose USB until you go back to either 400 or 410 firmware. Well, I said a lot. I hope you found it useful. Good luck!

MothAudio 02-27-10, 09:00 PM Arg. I downloaded the plasma break on Memorex DVD-R and it plays on my PC but I can't get my Pioneer DV400V to read it! Guess I'll haver to go the SD card route and look a little closer at that Panasonic Blu-Ray!
grolschie 03-01-10, 01:11 AM Hello. Is there a way to reduce the volume on these players slightly? Firmware with such a feature? I find when playing CDs via digital coax my amp clips in places on some (loud?) CDs. I haven't noticed it with Dolby Digital & DTS DVDs. So I am trying to troubleshoot. Thanks in advance.
marcos7684 09-15-10, 08:50 AM Hello. I recently ran into an issue where .avi files (on a 4G verbatim USB key)stopped playing after about an hour on my Pioneer DV400. I poked around and think that this is due to Cinavia DRM.
Has anyone else encountered this? Any ideas on a workaround?
Thanks very much for your help.

Since this is a DVD player, I don't think Cinavia DRM is the fault here. My understanding is that regular DVD players don't support that but Bluray players and PS3s do.
AVI (XviD/DivX) files can be problematic for stand alone players if they weren't encoded for compatibility.

There's a few factors that could've gone wrong.
Right off the bat, Memorex DVDrs are terrible quality discs. They can be "hit or miss" and if you get lucky and it works now, it might not later on. Use better quality media, especially for anything important.
Also, what speed did you burn at and what program did you burn with?
My personal rule of thumb is to set the burn speed to half of what the disc's top rated speed is and use ImgBurn and do not run any other programs while burning.
If after doing those things and the burn still fails or you still get faulty play back, I would suspect the burner may be going belly up.
Does this player have a setting for 0 IRE black level from SD outputs?
Looked through all the menu's but found nothing about a black level setting for non N. American use.

Not in the original firmware.
You need a modified firmware for that!
I have a Pioneer DV-400V and would like to turn OFF the OSD while playing. I do not want the words "PLAY, STOP, REW, etc" to show on the screen when I press controls. If this is not possible to turn off the OSD, please recommend a DVD player that lets me turn off the OSD.
Thanks for your help!

saudagar 03-21-11, 08:33 PM I updated my dvd player with YGB7328I firmware posted in this thread. Then i changed my Player settings to PAL (instead of Auto or NTSC .. i am in US which is NTSC) Now after i restarted, no image shows up on my TV.. when i connect a USB movie, it shows that there's a GUI (on menu select) but no image shows up on TV. It was all working fine after the update but before PAL switch. I tried FF and then "ON" btn.. but it does not show any display settings on TV as well!!
Any help will be appreciated

ccoutts 05-24-11, 01:00 AM Hi, I have A DV-400V which won't power up any more. I haven't been trying to update firmware or anything, it just won't turn on any more. It had been fairly slow to start up over the last few years (ie screen was blank for a while after pressing power).
Anyone have any idea?
I opened it up, and the only fuse is fine. Caps look good too (not bulging). I guess they could be stuffed internally though.
Thanks for any help
Chris

ccoutts 05-24-11, 05:41 PM Thanks Vince... but I live in New Zealand ;-)
Found a Service Manual for it, so will diagnose it somehow. Other people must just drop them in the bin at this stage.

ccoutts 05-26-11, 02:03 AM Got it sorted. A rectifier diode was blown in the power supply circuit. I found the service manual for it, and diagnosed from there. If anyone else has this issue, PM me.
grolschie 05-26-11, 03:03 AM Good news. And good on you. I like the DV-400V.
charles123krik 06-01-11, 12:58 PM I just bought this DVD player and im very interested in playing DivX or avi via USB. I have a lacie 100 gb HD laptop i tried a few files at first and I answer using the format of the fat 32 himself, still nothing. i then powered externally through the USB power connection and other pioneer then showed me the root menu i tried a few divx and played, but the problem is to show a little choppy, and missing frames. I tried to file a long time at about 400 mb and another at 700 mb.
smeedles 10-04-11, 02:22 AM I am just wondering if it is possible for my DV-400v that already plays PAL will be able to play NTSC?

Yes it will, you just need to update the firmware with the multi-region hacked one.

I have had a look around and everything I find says that it is for the region 2 players, I have a region 4 player. Will the Firmware still still work on my player?
I am just wondering if it is possible for my DV-400v that already plays PAL will be able to play NTSC?
Yes your player will be able to play a NTSC disc, how ever you also need a TV that is caple to recive a NTSC signal or the picture will be in black&white.
If you by "able to play NTSC" mean that you want to look at a region 1 disc. Then it depends on if your player is mukltiregional or not.
If your in Australia you player should be multiregional when you buy it, this is due to import/export laws of Australia.
If you player is not multiregional you need to install the modified firmware that you find over at www.pioneerfaq.info
