I just got a PS3 yesterday. It came with Talladega Nights on Blu Ray. Now is it me or is the picture quality on that movie extremely poor. I am comparing it to my HD-A1. I only have a 720p samsung dlp. I set the output to 1080i since I know that the PS3 cant output 720p. So i was hoping for some suggestions on movies to get that will change my mind on the quality of Blu Ray. Thanks.

Get another movie. Talladega Nights has pretty poor PQ.

Check the Tier 1 or 2 titles in the link below, and I'm sure they'll change your mind about Blu-ray.

Dunno why but I loved the way Enemy of the State looks on Blu Ray.

If you do a little searching on the forum you'd know the TN packaged with the PS3 was considered one of the worst BDs ever. Plenty of good ones to choose from.

Black Hawk Down.
Casino Royale
The Prestige
Kung-Fu Hustle
Kingdom of Heaven
X3

et al.

I don't know of that BD, but I own the director's cut version, which is sold separately of the PS3. I thought the PQ of that separate BD is really good and I have the feeling it respects what the director wanted. By the way, many posts (in many threads) have been devoted to discussing both BDs. I suggest you give these posts a look...

And welcome among format agnostics!

I'd second DaveFi's picks. Another great one for PQ is Crank, but the movie is not to everyone's taste.

Black Hawk Down, Crank, FlyBoys, open Season, Casino Royale, Rocky, etc look really good, I also say to check out The Queen, maybe too slow for some but the picture is suparb.

Look for any mepg 4 movie, as most mepg 2 movies just don't cut it. I have most of the better Blu Ray movies, and IMHO VC-1 still looks better.

And FYI, VC-1 isn't "MPEG-4".

Crank, Casino Royale and Black Hawk Down are great starter discs, although I'd strongly suggest you rent Crank, unless you frequently have people to demo the BD format for. The movie is pretty much forgettable, but it does have some excellent PQ. Kingdom of Heaven was also great, and worth a rent.

FYI "VC-1 is NOT MPEG 4". Who said it was?
The OP ask what releases would sell him on Blu Ray. I repeat, IMHO movies encoded with VC-1 ( most HD DVD movies ) looks better the those with mpeg 2 or 4.

Not true, there are some definte crap looking BDs out there, and movies like TN, Fifth Element, etc prove that one.

The tier thread has more MPEG-2 titles in tiers 1/0 than any other codec with AVC taking second and VC-1 a distant third so....

Of course that's in the Blu Ray thread

I have both formats, XA2 and PS3. 56"dlp screen using HDMI connections. 40+ HD DVD's and 10 BDs.

What I see is: VC-1 movies have more pop and 3d effect that any of my BD movies and I have the best movies of both formats. BD would have a killer setup if they would use VC-1 encode. IMHO. :) :D No complaints about the BD format just the encodes.

Deja vu as a example:

To the OP, did not want to highjack your thread into a flame war. Just wanted to share my experiences comparing both formats, having gone neutral like yourself.

The codec has nothing to do with the picture quality as long as the correct bitrate level has been used for the respective codec. Compare some of Paramounts cross format releases and you'll see the MPEG2 version is just as good if not better than the VC-1 encdoe. That's the best comparison since you are comparing the same film transfer coming from the same film elements.

BTW dmbmay98, check out Casino Royale. Unbelievable picture and sound plus a couple of high def extras among other things.

I disagree, the codec has everything to do with PQ. Difference of opinion here.

I would say Casino Royale is the best looking action movie out on BD that I have seen. Nice to see some extras on there also!

I watched Deja Vu tonight, and I was very impressed by the picture quality. I watched Goal yesterday, and it also looked pretty good.

Deja Vu bitrate peak at 45mbits in split second on BluRay

The best studio on HD DVD is Universal globally. Warner is nice but theirs recents title show flaws that are just unacceptable on Written Media on both format..

How did you manage that? I thought that was an early promotional, long since over. I certainly didn't get a copy of TN last month :(

black hawk down is my favorite bd disc for sure. it, casino royale and the prestige make bd look good. even older titles like terminator 2 and the usual suspect looks pretty good (though they are not reference material).

you'll like bd a lot. the one bit of advice I can offer with dual release titles like mission impossible 3 or babel is to go for the vc1 or avc version... this will usually mean the hd dvd version. I bought both version of MI:3 to test out the difference between the platforms and vc1 versions is just a little slicker. i rented babel hd dvd (i own the bd version) and again the avc version looked a little better. that's not to look down upon the mpeg-2 releases as they can look fricking amazing. In the case of SUperman Returns or other dual format title released in VC-1 just get the one that fits your need. I have combo discs and I bought the BD version.

I could not disagree with you more. Big budget titles on both platforms (ususlly exclusives I've noticed) look amazing. I'd compare BHD (MPEG2) and CR (AVC) to any HD DVD anyday... they're in the same ballpark. And like you I own both.

Probably been sitting on the shelf collecting dust =P

I'd also like to recommend Identity and Reign of Fire. Both are certainly excellent and even excel my memories of them in the theater.

Not sure about it... I thought PS3's problem was precisely 1080i only sets!?! As far as I know PS3 has no problem outputing 720P and, in fact, that's what you should be using. It cannot output 1080I though, so older CRTs which are 1080i only will receive a 480P feed from the PS3.

You sure you are getting an HD signal at all? Can your TV display the res of the feed?

Well the PS3 has two problems. First it cannot output blu ray movies at 720p. The second is that if a game is set to 720p it cannot output it to 1080i. So two different problems.

yes, you are right. And the HDMI issues as well. Pretty interesting piece of hardware though, hope they fix most of issues via software.

First problem seems to b easy to fix via SW cause the CPU(s) is mostly idle during movie playback. The second, however...

I had to buy a receiver to get around the HDMI issues with my Westinghouse (only a problem with the PS3).

It is a very nice piece of hardware overall, would be great if everyone was able to enjoy it without these nagging problems. (especially those without 1080p TVs)

Crank, The Prestige, Kingdom of Heaven, Tears of the Sun, Casino Royal, Flyboys, Vertical Limit and Black Hawk Down. Can't go wrong with any of these imo.
