View Full Version : Bigger Price gap coming May 3rd (Canada Only)
SomethingMore 04-29-07, 12:31 PM 60gb PS3 at Futureshop.com:
Our price: $769.99 CAD
Discount: -$70.00 CAD
Sale Price: $699.99 CAD
Sale Ends: 5/3/2007
That means, after May 3rd, the price-gap between HD DVD (HD-A2) and Blu Ray (PS3) will be $320 CAD ($570 CAD if you're using the Xbox add-on with your existing PC or Xbox, but that's "cheating" apparently...)
Bestbuy.ca doesn't mention the list price of $769.99, but bestbuy.ca RARELY mentions list price. They just change their prices at the same time as futureshop, usually.
yikes!
Deja Vu 04-29-07, 05:18 PM In Ontario - $770 + 14% tax = $107.80 for a total of $877.80.
HD-A2 - $450 (Future Shop in Kingston, Ontario) + 14% = $513
$877.80 - $513 = $364.80
The Sony BD standalone player sells for approximately $1,300.00 before tax ($1,482.00 after tax vs. the HD-A2 for $513.00 after tax price). Now you know why I still don't own a BD player!
Cheers,
Grant
bigmf99 04-29-07, 06:16 PM Thats the bundle with F1 championship. the game normally sells for $70 Cdn. Your post is a little misleading.
SomethingMore 04-29-07, 06:58 PM hmm...
didn't realize. but "normally", futureshop will remove the non-bundled version a few days after adding the bundled version to their site.
I'll check back on May 4th, and see what's listed.
Electone 04-30-07, 08:43 AM Walmart in Canada is selling the PS3 for $659.00.
BuGsArEtAsTy 04-30-07, 09:05 AM The PS3 is usually about $699 (not $769), with several stores selling it for a bit less.
Still, $650+ is steep. It's OK if you want both a game machine and a hi-def movie player, but it's steep for a hi-def movie player alone, and it's steep for a game machine alone.
P.S. Shouldn't this be in the Blu-ray forum?
I think the weakening US dollar is hurting the Canadian dollar also, in relation to the Yen.
As a result, the losses on PS3 sales may be higher than Sony has budgeted.
This is being seen in the pricing of the PS3 in Europe also, I believe, where the PS3 is much more expensive than in the US.
Sony has so much on the line, that they may see raising the price in the USA as being suicidal, so since they are unable to change the US pricing, they may be forced to sell it higher in the "marginal" markets, such as Canada and Europe.
If I recall, the PS3 has already had at least one price increase in Canada in the last few months.
All speculation on my part, of course, but it's not groundless...
ottscay 05-01-07, 02:58 AM No, it's not groundless, but IMO less likely than the far simpler assumption that the PS3 is more expensive in those markets because...that's the way CE products are regularily marketed. My european and canadian friends always bitch about how much more expensive their CE products are (and rightfully so). RdJam may be right in general about companies offsetting US discounts with higher prices in other markets, but without evidence that their pricing is really out of line with normal price imbalances (and adjusted for currency changes over the last half year) there isn't really much evidence that this is because of PS3 sales good or bad, or due to any unforseen problems in marketing the players.

The 60G retailed in Canada at $659.99 at it's introduction, then a couple months later virtually every place raised the price to $699 (assumed to have something to do with exchange rates, etc). Now Walmart seems to have lowered it back down to $659, and I'm curious if the other places will follow. (lucky me paid $699 for it :( )
Kilian.ca 05-04-07, 11:58 PM Just to set the record straight, the PS3 60GB on its own is still CAD699.99 at FS.
There's NO bigger price gap between HD DVD (HD-A2) and Blu Ray (PS3) as the OP said. So it was interpreting something out of nothing.
Scott Lyons 05-05-07, 11:48 AM FutureShop was the store that increased the PS3 to $699 2 months ago.Toys R Us followed. But The Sony Store ,which are all corporate stores is still $659..
Walmart is also still $659.
FutureShop will price match both Walmart & The Sony Store, but it makes me mad that you have to get them to price match the actual Canadian MSRP from there BS price. It is easy to fix though.Don't buy from FutureShop.

Is there actually an MSRP? I thought there wasn't.

Yup, made a mistake.
Thread can be locked now.
Caanda45 05-05-07, 12:31 PM I have made the simple to decision to not buy anything from Sony!!!!!!!!
ryoohki 05-05-07, 12:55 PM The PS3 is 659.99$ at walmart
THe HD-A20, witch has the same feature (1080p, HDMI etc) 599.99$, off course you could say that the remote is 39.99$ for the PS3 and add to the price

Can you get an IR receiver now for the PS3? Having a separate remote for the PS3 doesn't seem like a very good solution IMO. (I like using just a single universal remote.)
