View Full Version : Subtitle controls for DVD players to fix non-anamorphic DVDs?

I've been re-watching a lot of my DVD collection now that I have a 16x9 TV and I noticed on all my DVDs that were non-anamorphic, and thus give me a letterboxed image within a 4x3 frame that I obviously have to adjust my zoom settings for it to look correct.

This poses problems for foreign films that I require the subtitles. Do I have to re-purchase these DVDs w/ anamorphic transfers (assuming there have been re-issues of them), or can I correct this by buying an Oppo or something?

My current DVD player can only turn them on or off, but I was considering replacing it with an Oppo soon, I just hope that has controls for offsetting the subtitles.

Is what I'm asking for theoretically possible?

Possible: yes, subtitles can be repositioned. I don't recall any player reviews that test this ability though. It's an interesting question.

The 970 is the only Oppo with good quality zooming. I would ask here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=682896 if subtitles get moved up during a zoom.

Good luck! We all have lists of our unloved non-anamorphic titles.
