Hello, i just bought a new LCD TV. I got the Samsung LN-T4042H. I'm looking for a good DVD player that upconverts to 720p/1080p. The samsung is only 720p but later down the line i'll get a 1080p. I saw this Panasonic 1080p Upconvert DVD player (DVD-S53K) at Best Buy. Is it worth it? If not, can you recommend me one? Thanks.

See "A Primer on DVD in a High-Def world; or How Much is that Scaler in the Window?" (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=477740) before you get your shorts in a knot over "upconverting"!!

That's a very long and informative thread and i will promise to read it later on. But i'm guessing it's about how it's a bad idea to buy an upscaling DVD player in the first place? I honestly haven't seen the difference between non-upscaling vs upscaling. But i do know that my current dvd player doesn't show as great of a picture as in my WEGA CRT TV. I just thought that it would make a difference if i get one of those upscaling dvd players. I'm just waiting for the price to go down on those dual blu-ray/HD-DVD players, but i would like to continue buying regular DVDs until i get the next-gen players. But hey, if you're telling me it's a waste of money to get it, then i wouldn't get it. I just see a lot of threads here about it especially the Oppo brand and i thought that it works.

I think the reasonable consensus is "it depends" and "different people see different things." There is no substitute for trying it out and trusting your own eyes.

I've been pleased with my Oppo players. They have a 30-day return if it doesn't work out for you.

Whatever you do, for a fair test use a calibration disc on each player: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9889995&&#post9889995

Since you asked for the "best," I'll recommend the Denon 2930 and 3930, although they are pricier than the ones mentioned above. Otherwise, the Oppo are a great value.

Best, Denon 5910. Depending on your budget, perhaps more realitistic, Denon 3930 or 2930, like Bill said. I'm bias to Denon though, not an Oppo fan.

How about the recently reviewed Denon DHT-487DV ?

I really like the Toshiba A2 for upconverting more then the Oppo.
