View Full Version : Where in the world is Matt Lauer...in HD!
Sevenfeet 04-30-07, 09:31 AM Turned on the Today Show this morning and was watching the annual "Where in the World is Matt Lauer" boondoogle, er travelogue, this time live from Boeing's assembly plant in Everett, WA. I haven't seen too many remote HD moments on Today and certainly no live ones. But all of Matt's live spots are in HD this time. I suspect we won't get that when he leaves the United States for distant lands, but the HD experience at the Boeing plant was a nice touch.
ion-man 04-30-07, 10:03 AM Yeah I saw some of it this AM and it was indeed breathtaking as well as informative. I had no idea that place was so huge! Can't wait to go home to watch the entire thing. Let's keep our collective fingers crossed that we may get more HD feeds. Can't hurt to hope as I've been really looking forward to his trip hoping it would be in HD. Any idea where the next stop is for tomorrow? :D
I feel SO sorry for him having to do such tough duty

Sevenfeet 04-30-07, 10:13 AM I would suspect that part of the reason why this was possible is that the local NBC affiliate, KING-TV/DT does their local broadcasts in HD. So the facilities are there for a production like this.
kenglish 05-02-07, 08:35 AM Yesterday, he was in Ireland. No HDTV on that one.
Do I have to go there and take my own HD video  ?
This morning he was in Bhutan..in HD.
Grampaw 05-02-07, 09:53 AM A pleasant surprise from Bhutan, but the cut-ins were SD with side bars.
I think tomorrow is Beijing, China.
Walt
he was in Shanghai in 2005. So soon to go back? HD gear from NBC Olympics are still being shipped.
colleycol 05-02-07, 09:12 PM My college buddy works in that building, he bought a scooter to go from the parking lot to his cubicle. He is an stress engineer, I am a mechanical engineer.
I work in a building about 1/10 the size south of Seattle since we only make the parts not the final assembly .
You dont know how big it is till you see it rain IN THE BUILDING!!! Unbelievable.
In his trailer getting a manicure?
choskyigragspa 05-02-07, 10:26 PM This morning he was in Bhutan..in HD.
Ohh...I'm so sad I missed this...but some of us have to work in the morning. Bhutan is a really beautiful country. (If you're really sharp you'd have noticed that Paro Dzong -- where Matt was during the live scenes -- was featured in the movie Little Buddha, starring Chris Isaak and Keanu Reeves about a dozen years ago.)
For those who were watching this morning, was the video of Taktsang Monastery (the monastery on the side of the cliff) in HD? If so, that would be really impressive, as the hike from the road to the monastery is several hours long, and the last stretch that leads to the monastery/hermitage is along a narrow path that is literally on the edge of a sharp cliff. Taking the cameras and any other equipment would have been very burdensome.
If you want to see some nice coverage of Bhutan I highly recommend people pick up Michael Palin's BBC documentary Himalaya (http://www.amazon.com/Michael-Palin-Himalaya/dp/B0009GX1EC) on DVD. The documentary is beautifully shot 16:9 anamorphically enhanced , and is totally worth every penny. Great stuff. I wish they'd start releasing this stuff on HD soon.
Bhutan looked like 16:9 SD to me.

Told ya it wouldn't be Beijing. Wednesday's clue was a red herring. Would've been too easy.
ion-man 05-03-07, 10:23 AM I too thought it was China because of the 'host the world' phrase but alas, way off. The correct location though, is very true to the clue. Too bad I missed it. Can't wait to get home to watch it properly on tv as opposed to the pda :D. I am loving his destinations so far though, the Bhutan jaunt was refreshing to say the least. I love how they are insisting that they will not lose their culture in the face of adding modern conveniences. I've been watching the developments in his current location for today and I am amazed that they still have that much more projects in store. They are only 10% through what they plan to do. Can't beat the indoor skiworld though. Outstanding! By 2015 we will all be in awe if we aren't already.
Grampaw 05-03-07, 10:23 AM It was the "Soon to host the world" clue that got me. . . .

Can anyone confirm in Dubai was HD?
I missed the show, and was watching the net feed, and when they went to a studio shot of Meredith looking at a Plasma, Matt appeared to be in 16:9, and didn't appear to be "stretched."
I couldn't tell otherwise.
The title of the thread needs to be changed as the feeds appeared to be 16:9 SD, and low bitrate SD at that. I suspect it was 576/50i in some places like Ireland as there was no flicker from the lights when they went inside.

I agree. While I only saw the Bhutan stuff on the MSNBC website, I watched on TV yesterday, and Dubai certainly looked like 16:9 SD.
