I'm looking for some people collecting Japense blu ray titles, and expecially the following:

Underworld evolution
Hitch
S.W.A.T.
A Knight's Tale
Into The Blue
Stealth
Tears Of The Sun
50 First Dates
The Big Hit
Ultraviolet
Vertical Limit
Click
Big Fish
Hell Boy
Identity
Warriors Of Heaven And Earth

I'm interested to exactly know the special features of such editions, because I've bought several SONY Japanese titles and compared them to the US versions of the same titles: I discovered most of times Japanese versions have more special features, expecially unseen trailers in HD . The titles mentioned above are the ones I haven't bought and would like to check. If someone has such titles please post the list of features; thank you very much

I've done the same thing and havent had any luck finding others with titles such as these (when theyre easily available in the US at lower prices, its not unexpected!)

What I do is use CDJapan: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp

Find the movie you want, ex: Hitch: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=BRS-37674

Copy the link at the bottom titled "See this item details at neowing.co.jp (our Japanese website) ". The Japanese version of CDJapan often has more detailed information than on the english side/

Paste the link into the link translator at http://world.altavista.com and select Japanese -> English.

You won't get a clear translation but you can usually tell what extras the blu ray has. It won't usually list trailers, but actual special features should be there.

For hitch:
"Benefit: Making documentary collection (2 kinds), NG scene collection, notice compilation"

I believe the NG scenes are often either outtakes or deleted scenes. Notice compilation, though? Haven't a clue on that one ;)

Kind Sofdec7, first a great thank you for your answer.

I usually use the way you suggested, and it works great, but as you told It won't usually list trailers which are the thing I'm mostly interested to, since there are many titles like "the producers" and "the cave" which have been released in Japan only. I got the Japan edition of Hostel which includes 5 trailers in HD never seen anywhere, so i would like to know the trailers included in each of the titles listed above. CDJapan won't list the trailers, but maybe a Japan site featuring the reviews of the Blu-Ray discs could have them listed. Do you know any? Thanks

cinemeccanica,

I'm always very much interested in Japanese releases. They usually have higher standards (specially true for DVD) and better looking coverarts.

Now on the BD matter, the only ones I recall having more extra features than the US version is MI:3 and Black Rain.

I'm also a HUGE fan of theatrical trailers and also have gone the distance of purchasing several discs just for the trailers included. But I don't have any list of the ones included on the Jap titles.

Can you break down the list of the ones you have? This also interests me very much.

Soon I'll be getting Into The Blue, 16 Blocks and Vertical Limit From Jp. I'll let you know when I get them.

Sofdec7,

Notice compilation is the alta vista translation for a collection of trailers ;)

Cool, on next friday I'll write down the trailer list on my SONY japanese titles. I also have 16 blocks but not Vertical Limit and Into the blue. Please post the list of the trailers of them as soon as you'll have them. Which are the extra features in MI 3 which aren't present of the USA version?

cinemeccanica,

can you comment on the PQ of 16 Blocks? Have you had the chance to take a look at the US version, if so how do they compare?

Friday can't come soon enough. Thanks

You are right, but I'm at university now and I'll be back home on friday

Anyway, since I have both the US version VC-1 and the Japanese one MPEG-2 I'll compare them, and report here

^Sheesh.
No home theatres in Japan?

I would really like to see Japanese movies come to BD...not the American imports.

Who cares about the cover art and the extra features.
The titles are priced at a min of $28-33.
Getting anything below that is a distant dream to Japan.

Doesn't really matter to me personally, as I make 3 times what I made at my last job in America, and I usually spend more than 100,000 yen a month on entertainment without blinking, so discs costing 20-50 percent more is nothing.

Plus, I'm sure there will be a decent selection of Blu-Ray discs for rental eventually. Tsutaya has just about anything you can think of on DVD, even ultra-niche TV and anime series. Once the studios feel they've milked the early adopters enough, they'll start putting BD out for rental as well. Wouldn't count on HD DVD though, since relatively few people even know about that format here.

And one high-def aspect is a bit cheaper in Japan (besides the PS3): projectors. While my room isn't exactly huge, having a pull-down screen in front of my computer/AV racks and a projector in the closet behind me is a near-perfect HD setup. And with all of the other conveniences and wide selection of entertainment here, I could care less if Americans have to spend a little less to buy Blu-Ray.

I'd love to know the differences as well if someone could list them.

WOW, thanks for the list cinemeccanica. It's great ;)

If you don't mind I have a few more questions:

Does Hostel features all the extras of the DVD version? (I couldn't find this info anyware)

And Regarding Layer Cake, how would you qualify the difference between the JP and US version? Can you say how many inches is your display?

I'm not doubting you in any way, it's just that Paidgeek said SPE would use the same enconding worldwide. So it's really surprinsing both Layer Cake and RE:A look better than the US (and they were even released ealier on Jp). So it's very interesting indeed.

RE:A doesn't interest me, but Layer Cake is high on my list and did intend to pick up the Jp version for the better coverart, but I had no idea to expect a better transfer.

I guess 16 Blocks will be a safe bet as well, same PQ as US and improved audio with PCM.

Once again, thanks for all the information, it's much appreciated. :)

about hostel, I don't know the extra features of the DVD, anyway if you can list them I can say if they are all present in the Blu-ray version-

About layer cake I demuxed the video tracks only without audio, and yes they are adifferent, the japan is shorter of about 500Mb, not so much, but looks a bit less grainy and noisy; anyway the difference is so small that isn't worth the price only for a quality improvement, it's OK only if you are a collector and want to have all the editions.

I'm very interested to the trailers, for example emily rose has the same and only trailer as my italian version. But since japanese edition are the most expensive I would like to find the informations on the forum instead of buying the discs and check myself. Unfortunately there aren't so many users from Japan, and maybe they have not the titles I listed

Nothing great about HI-DEF seems to happen here except for over priced flat screen tellys hitting the shelves every now and then.
There are no stand-alone BD players sold in Japan.

come again? no stand-alone BD players sold meaning they aren't available, or that no one buys them. if the former you have no clue. also pricing on TVs in Japan is pretty fair, and the models beat the hell out of what's sold elsewhere.

selection and pricing of BD in Japan are bad I'll give you that

btw I don't buy that many Japanese BDs despite living in Japan, I have them sent from the US. But I can list features from any Japanese release if anyone requests.

THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE the only uncut edition releasedDo you know whats different between this and the UK version - thought they were both uncut?

Thanks

cinemeccanica
05-05-07, 03:53 PM
Maybe also the UK is, as far as I know the Japan version (I have) is labeled exactly "the exorcism of emily rose complete edition" ; I haven't got the uK for a comparison, anyway I'm sure the Japan is uncut. If you have the UK I could check the exact running time

THE PRODUCERS excellent picture quality, no extras

I have this disc, and it has all of the extras of the DVD.

AlexBC
05-05-07, 05:59 PM
Thanks cinemeccanica ;)

The extras for the Hostel DVD are:

- 4 Commentary Tracks
- Hostel Dissected - a 3-Part Behind-the-Scenes Featurette (about an hour long)
- Kill the Car! Multi-angle interactive Feature

But I can list features from any Japanese release if anyone requests.

kojima16,

can you please confirm if MI:3 is indeed a double BD-50 disc set?

The US version is double BD-25 disc set, and Paramount Japan website indicates 2 BD-50, but that could be wrong.

Who about MI and MI2, are they BD-50 too?

cinemeccanica
05-05-07, 06:29 PM
About the producers, yes, you are right I double checked and it's so.

About Hostel I'm going to check and report.

About MI3 I heard there are some more extras in the japan version, can anyone confirm this? Which are the extras not present in US version?

Edit: I've cheched and they are all there: the Blu ray features:

Commentary by Eli Roth ,Quentin Tarantino, Boaz Yokin and Scott Spiegel
Commentary by Eli Roth, Barbara Nedeljakova and Eythor Gudjonsson, George Folsey Jr. and Harry Knowles
Commentary by Eli Roth and the producer Chris Briggs and Gabriel Roth
Commentary by Eli Roth
Hostel Dissected - a 3-Part Behind-the-Scenes Featurette (about an hour long)
Kill the Car! Multi-angle interactive Feature

Thank you very much cinemeccanica.

I guess that settle's it for me. All I had seen so far indicated it was a bare bones release.

But is it all crammed on a BD-25? Is the PQ OK?

Please post back if you hear from IamAnoobieCheez. ;)
