View Full Version : Why can't BluRay have resume?
dojoman 04-30-07, 03:57 PM I'm puzzled as to why both HD-DVD and BluRay do not support resume (playback movie from where you left off after turning off). At least some HD-DVD software support bookmarking but you still have to deal with waiting for three different logos and warning text before you can get to disc menu.
lilstinky 04-30-07, 03:59 PM The 360 HD-DVD player supports resume. Even if you eject the disc and put it in later it will start where you left off. I wish my PS3 did the same thing and maybe Sony can add it in with a software update.
eightninesuited 04-30-07, 04:00 PM Huh? Blu-ray does have resume, or did on my old Samsung.
I can't seem to find it on the PS3....

I think if you hit eject without stopping the movie on the PS3, it'll resume when you start it back up.

Seems strange, but I'll have to try that. I tend to fall asleep trying to watch my movies and finish them in the morning.
I power down the PS3, then in the morning after finding where I left off I'm left saying:
That was a minor inconvenience. :)

Mine doesn't. Please confirm this with your unit.
Not only should it have resume, since the PS3 has a harddrive it should have bookmarking for DVDs as well as Blu-Ray.
Both the Panasonic and Sammy P1000 have resume. The Pioneer and Sony standalones do not. Not sure about the Sammy P1200.

I'm at work. I'll confirm or deny it tonight. I'm going off memory of a fluke occurance :D
ETA:: There was a way I got it working though.. I just cant remember the exact way off the top of my head.

"Should" doesn't always translate to Does.
Neo1965 04-30-07, 04:37 PM This is what it does. When you press stop, you get to the PS3 system menu, you can do lots of stuff in there. When you press Play or select the BD movie and hit enter, it plays at the point when you stopped.
Is that what you mean?
You can try this with your PS3 remote. (Btw, the samsung also does this, when you press stop and then play, it continues playing from when you stopped.)

The 1200 has it.
This is the first I had heard that any BD players don't have this. I and others have complained repeatedly about the lack of resume on HD DVD.

Please let me know one way or the other tonight. I would love to use this feature if I can.

If you eject the disc and then put it back in later will it resume where you left off? This is a feature I really like with my 360 and hopefully the PS3 will have it in the future with a software update. I sometimes eject a disc halfway through a movie and play a game for while when a friend sends a invite on the 360 and its a nice feature to be able to put the disc back in later and resume right where I left off.

No, we mean that you stop the disc, turn the player off and when you turn it back on you can continue playing where you left off...
aaronwt 04-30-07, 10:49 PM No good if it doesn't resume after taking the disc out or at least have bookmarks. I sometimes go through several discs and I want to be able to easily start at the spot I as last watching. I rarely leave a disc in.
darkjedi664 04-30-07, 11:22 PM My Sony PC drive resumes just fine if I hit stop.
dojoman 04-30-07, 11:43 PM Nope it does not work for ps3 after reboot. It does resume if you don't turnoff. The same for xbox hd addon. Not sure about settop player.
Rob Tomlin 04-30-07, 11:47 PM My Pioneer Elite BDP HD1 has the resume feature and it works perfectly. My Toshiba A1 on the other hand........

Using the remote. It's STOP, then Play....
And it resumes... did it multiple times tonight.
Using the circle to exit out of the BD player won't remember your spot.

hmm.... on my PC at least. blu-ray is the one that HAS resume. HD DVD annoys in that is doesn't and you need to bookmark and even then you often must sit through a title screen or two.... for this reason, if everything else is equal i get blu-ray over HD DVD.

That was a minor inconvenience. :)Just an idea, but if you setup the PS3 to run the Folding@Home software instead of turning it off, then you could leave it on while feeling that it is doing something useful (if you think that is useful) and when you came back, your movie may resume right where you were. I haven't run through those steps to make sure that resume works doing that on the PS3, but I think it would.

My 360 addon resumes after a reboot and even after I eject a disc and put it back in later.

If you eject the disc half way through the movie and stick it back in at a later time will it remember where you left off? This is the feature I like with the 360. I just tried it several times with the PS3 and I have to sit through all the menu stuff and FBI stuff and then use scene search to get back to where I was. If yours is doing this than my PS3 is either screwed up or there is some menu setting that I need to set up on mine.

It wasn't doing that, I was mistaken. The above that I did say is what works on my machine though.
here is what you do.
when playing a movie on the ps3. just press the ps button shutdown the system. after that put the system back on and ti will auto load the movie on the chapter it was.
at least that is what i use when i am tired. continue watching it then day after.

I don't think it works. The movie will never resume after turning off the system. I think some people here are confused since they just press stop and play again, of course it will resume but not if you turn it off. Trust me I've done that many times and I always wish damn thing will resume. If yours resume then which movie was it? Maybe it's software related.
Xbox Addon won't do it either. Maybe someone was again confused with bookmarking feature.
