Black Hawk Down still looks the best. Casino Royale doesn't look very impressive to me. Weird, how an old movie looks 5 times better than a new movie.

I said this in another thread but Blackhawk Down sold me on the format.

It's an absolutely gorgeous transfer... one of the prides of my collection.

Another hidden gem is Stranger than Fiction. Doesn't get a lot of praise, but it's absolutely superb looking and it gets a lot of play in my house.

Good to see BHD getting some love. It's easily one of my favorites too. PQ can't get much better than that!

Funny. BHD did almost nothing for me. All the grain etc (I realize it's designed that way, but whatever..) really didn't pop for me. Casino Royale is, for me, one of the best (if not the best) transfer I've seen. BHD definitely sounds better than it looks (PCM).

Just watched The Departed and I must say it looked fantastic. I place it right up there with Casino Royale.

The Departed is excellent.
Can you imagine if WB screwed this up?
The Academy Award Winner???
At least, they were smart enough NOT to give it the normal WB treatment.... ;)

5X, c'mon! I think what you're seeing is that Casino Royale's original shoot is lacking in places. Obviously, the encode is good for both films.

Tears of the Sun looked the best IMO

X-Men 3. Its AVC video track peaks at 30 Mbps. Film grain is very apparent throughout. The opening FOX logo is so sharp that it looks like they forgot to apply anti-aliasing. IMO it's the "SuperBit" of Blu-rays.

BHD is pretty damn good too. :)

BHD is my favorite BD disc so far; it's a good flick and oh so pretty.

BHD is, indeed, very impressive. But Casino Royale is right there with it in terms of PQ. I don't know how anyone could say BHD looks "5 times better".

The Departed maybe a 4
Casino Royale is a 4.5-5 title...so Departed not quite as good.

BHD did not impress me to much. The movie is average as well.

Kingdom of Heaven is one of the best overall discs though.

i dont get the hype behind BHD, i understand directors intent ect. ect. blah blah.

the picture is very grainy, the beginning is terrible. the movie itself is so repetitive and gets boring after some time.

i would much rather watch a grainy version of saving private ryan.

BHD is boring!?

That's hilarious.

OK, I'll take a different tack...

CR and KOH are both excellent, but the movie that astonishes me the most is The Searchers. What they've done with a 50 year old movie is incredible. It's like time travel to a theater of my youth...

That's hilarious.

after i see the same things happening over and over again, it gets boring.

the concept is not boring, i just found myself having to turn it off and watch the whole thing spread out over many times because it just bored me

Hey, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. I just didn't think it was boring in any way, shape or form. It is somewhat difficult to watch, as it was done in a very realistic manner. But that didn't make it boring.....in my opinion.

And what were the same things happening again and again? People getting shot?

i guess difficult to watch would be a better way of saying it. I just think it was a little slow for me.

There are a few good scenes, especially when the one copter goes down and they hide in that little alcove and the one guy is looking at the picture of his family as the hostiles come in on him.

terribly sad.

Terribly sad indeed, especially when you consider that it was based on a true story. That fact alone probably made it "less boring" to me!

You need to watch one of the many documentaries on the incident and/or read the book.
Boring isn't the word... ;)

Exactly...one of my nephews was telling me he didn't care for it until I mentioned it was based on true events.
He's one of the fools who stood in line for a PS3 for gaming...and now owns the BD. :)

Stranger Than Fiction was an excellent movie, and the PQ was great.

Kingdom of Heaven had excellent PQ, but the movie was kind of so so for me.

Unfortunately neither one is a movie that I would watch over and over.

Yes, as a fan of the film, I liked the book even better (more historically accurate).

It isnt strange that an old movie can look as good as a new. Film hasnt evolved very much during the years. Old movies could use a new scanning sometimes, but that doesnt mean they could have great quality.

As for BHD, i dont think its that good looking. It was certain scenes were it looked grainier then the theater print.

I think KOH and Casino Royal is better looking discs.
