View Full Version : help me decide on a TV!!
Saleen4971 04-30-07, 09:37 PM hey guys, im trying to decide on what TV i should buy. looking for anywhere form 50-65". has to have HDMI and component inputs, and i want 1080P native, through component and HDMI. doesn't HAVE to have a cablecard, but its a plus. dont care so much about PIP, or the speakers it has since i will be using my surround sound.
VGA or DVI would also be a plus that i COULD use.
i was hoping to spend under 2G's and i will be building my own stand. preferably something that i can buy at PC richards, since my girlfriends cousin manages one, so i can get a decent discount on a sony, samsung, mitsubishi.......
whats the deal with GAME inputs? how are hey different than regular inputs?
thanks guys - searching turned up so many posts it was difficult to find what i was looking for
assassin 04-30-07, 09:47 PM You can easily get a 61" Samsung HLS6187 for your budget that meets all of your needs (except for the cablecard).
josephmckinney 04-30-07, 10:06 PM Depending on the display, Game modes/inputs are used to bypass any processing within the TV that creates lag from the time you press a button on a game controller to when the action is displayed on the TV.
Saleen4971 05-01-07, 12:09 AM ahhh i see.
assassin - thanks i will check that model out :) cablecard liek i said isnt a big deal to me. we jsut have basic cable, and i dotn watch TV that much anyway. mostly jstu gaming and movies. that samsung i see supports 1080P, but is it native 1080P?
nintendoultra64 05-01-07, 01:35 AM it does 1080p as it wobles over the rainbow
Mocs123 05-01-07, 10:30 AM I just ordered a Samsung HL-S5687W. To my knowledge, Samsung is the only major brand that will accept 1080p through hdmi, component, and VGA. Most brads only accept 1080p via HDMI.
The Samsungs do not have CableCARD, but as I understand it, CableCARD will be worthless in a year or two anyways as it is only one way communication not two way like the cable boxes. I know Comcast is going to start having channels that require 2 way communication in the next year. If you are going to have it calibrated, I have been told that the Samsungs offer the best as far as service menus and options for the ISF calibrator.
The Samsungs were nice as well as the Sony sets, but I could get the Samsungs for $500 less therefore making the decision between the two easy for me. I ended up being torn between the Samsung and the new Toshiba models before finally deciding on the Sammy. Mitsubishi makes some full featured sets, but stay away from their entry level 731 series.
Saleen4971 05-01-07, 03:32 PM nwo i jstu have to decide between the 50, 56 or 61 inch screens.
Mocs123 05-01-07, 04:38 PM How far waway from the screen do you sit?
I sit 7.5 feet away and went with the 56". If I were 8 feet or more, I would go for the 61"
Saleen4971 05-02-07, 12:25 AM my couch will be roughly 6-7 feet from the TV. 56 should be perfect then?
ShockwaveTXB 05-02-07, 01:43 AM holy hell...57in will be huge from 6-7 feet away.
As you can see, its very objective.
Some say, for a 61", 8-9 ft is ideal, and others say closer, others say farther.
Its really dependent upon your viewing tastes and eyes... Go to a store and try to measure out what you think looks beautiful and buy based on that.
^^^ OT, but just had to jump in and say great username, Murali.
Saleen4971 05-02-07, 06:16 PM im gonna go to PC richards sometime soon and pick one out. probly the 56 though. seems like a good size.
another question though = what are your opinions on the LED DLP's? worth it or shodul i not even bother?
Saleen4971 05-03-07, 08:40 PM well i swung into a PC richards today. the 61 jstu looks so much bigger than the 56, i might jstu go with that.
do they make a 61" LED DLP? doe they have the light tunnel collapsing issues like the standard DLP's do or not? the website doenst show any LED DLP's at 61". hey dont egven how a 61", jstu go to like, 71 from 56.
i am def. leaning towards a 61" though
assassin 05-03-07, 10:22 PM From what I understand the light tunnel collapsing was a result of a bad glue that they used in the Dec 2006 builds (and possibly older). I think if you bought a 6187 and made sure it wasn't from december of 2006 you would be fine. Mine is a Feb 2007 build and I have no worries.
I stayed away from LED for a few reasons. First the price. Can't justify $1000 more. Second was that its pretty new technology and as such there are bound to be problems/issues. The current 6187w is pretty much as good as its gonna get as far as that technology is concerned.
Saleen4971 05-05-07, 09:43 PM im leanign towards the HL-S6187W now. i have 3 poepel to ask for prices, MIGHT get it monday, but probly later this week
can soembody confirm that the HL-S6187W can accpet 1080P through component?
can soembody confirm that the HL-S6187W can accpet 1080P through component?
